We used to have one of those really expensive universal controllers for our home theatre, it has since died... so we need a new one.

A huge feature is one that we can just hit DVD and the whole home theatre will go into the mode it needs for DVD, or tv, or whatever.

What are some cheap, but good universal remotes that do that (by cheap I mean less than 200)

Easy, get a Harmony remote. Get either a Harmony 676, or 688, or 880. Ignore the prices at Best Buy and on MSRP on it. You can get a 676 for $100 if you look. On average it's about $120. 688 is about the same price. Both are essentially the same functionality but with different physical layouts. If you want to go one step further, the 880 has a color screen and charger and can be had for about $140 to $150. It's got a few more bells and whistles but essentially the same functionality of the 676 and 688. Ignore that crap Sony remote posted above. I've had one of those and its terrible.

Get a Harmony and be thankful. You'll never use another remote again.

Can I control my DirecTivo with either of those remotes?

Yep. Get the 676 for that. It feels a lot like the DirecTivo remote. I've got mine controlling DirecTivo, TV, DVD Player, PS2, Receiver, and Xbox with it. I've used plenty of universal remotes before but every now and then I have to go back to the original. This remote is the first time I've ever been able to just put away all the remotes and use just one. It's godly and so easy to use. It simplifies everything for my g/f with the macros. All she needs to do is hit one button to do any task. It really could not be any easier or better.
