Lie.

A lot of games were delayed years because of it.

No lies detected.
No lies detected. Lots of games got delayed during that time
Work from home drives down productivity. Not surprised.
Well actually, the entire dev sphere lied. At the time, they swore wfh was more productive, gave them quicker, easier and larger access to the talent pool, etc.

Truth is that Kojima's taken longer to make a sequel compared to the time it took him to make the first DS as a new IP despite all the reused assets and support provided by Sony in the form of funding and an enhanced Decima Engine.

The industry has an overall productivity issue.

Salary devaluation and responsibility accretion cause way more productivity problems than WFH.

In the games industry, that didn't happen. These guys are making more money than ever before (inflation adjusted) with more benefits and accoutrements ever provided. They also went on hiring and acquisition binges that led to (still) bloated studios. Thats why you see so many layoffs. So the responsibilities per worker have not increased by any material basis. All the eviedence is in the extremely stagnant final products we get.

The Insomniac leak exposes that even the devs know it:

...is 3x the investment in [Spider-Man 2] evident to anyone who plays the game?

It happened everywhere and is still happening; not to mention any sequel can cost way more than the original without a dime of that additional cost ever landing in a developer's pocket. Suddenly every B2B contract is twice the price, tools and support for them is thrice the value, leadership wants fatter bonuses because they did such a swell fucking job the first time around, license is more expensive. Meanwhile, everyone actually doing the job is just happy to not be unemployed.

You just say this with no data or evidence.

The tech sector has had this cake and eaten it probably more than any other.

Why do you think those contracts cost more? Might it have to do with the fact that running said businesses cost more? And since we're not talking about raw materials or produce here, what is it other than development resources - ie people - that's getting more expensive?

To be honest, I've not kept up with recent C-suite pay, most of which is always in non-liquid forms like stock options. It's always been a largely irrelevant figure in this debate.

Hard to believe this will be Kojima's 4th new game launch since the last time Ken "all talk" Levine launched anything at all.

2013 was Bioshock Infinite and in that time we've gotten

Ground Zeroes
Phantom Pain
Death Stranding
Death Stranding 2.

Kojima works quick.

Why? Greed. Everyone is obsessed with delivering ever increasing profits, even in markets with no organic growth. Only way to do that is to squeeze: cut jobs, increase margins. And nothing is actually getting that much more expensive to warrant that, that's my point; and, I wager, the point of the person who actually made the comment about Spider-Man 2 costing three times as much. That's why everyone is hitting record profits and stocks keep rising, yet we hear of layoffs all the time.

At this point it's easier to heavily leverage AI for productivity rather than push for a culture change. Retool to a smaller staff of devs and more people to QC check the AI work.

Ken Levine is trying to do something entirely new from a systems standpoint.

Ground Zeroes, The Phantom Pain, Death Stranding and it's sequel are all built upon the same skeleton, an open-world game that plays like a TV show.

Ground Zeroes realllly isn't large enough to be considered a game, its a glorified demo at best. But yeah, Ken is full of shit, next game looks like ass. RE: sharing the same skeleton, kens next game is just bioshock with robots anyway.
