Highguard - A new sci-fi / fantasy PVP shooter from Titanfall and Apex developers

I'm going to place this up at the top as well:

For anyone looking to make "it's going to fail" posts, not that I blame you for doing so, but what do you want in a modern competitive PVP shooter?

COD clone done right? A new Halo type game? Unreal Tournament type arena shooter? Another Overwatch? A new Planetscape game? What should developers be doing with modern shooters?

People always talk about what they don't want from every newly announced PVP shooter, but people rarely explain what they do want from the genre.

Coming January 26th to PC, PS5 and Xbox.

- Free to play.
- Objective focused.
- Character abilities.
- Large environments.
- Mounts for quick traversal.
- No mention of PVE elements.

- Why not just make Titanfall 3? Because this isn't being made or published by EA. It's a team of former Titanfall and Apex developers who started their own company.

Description from the official you tube trailer:
From the creators of Apex Legends and Titanfall, comes Highguard: a PvP raid shooter where players will ride, fight, and raid as Wardens, arcane gunslingers sent to battle for control of a mythical continent.

There they'll clash against rival Warden crews for possession of the Shieldbreaker, then break into and destroy the enemy base to secure territory in this all-new breed of shooter.

I feel like this won't see success purely on the fact that the core fantasy of the game is hard to pinpoint.

As opposed to games like helldivers, marvel rivals and arc-raiders, that have themes that are easy to understand.

And probably dead and the subject of a Jason Scherier "What happened to Highguard?" postmortem article before next year's The Game Awards.

This looks horrible lol.

Personally I love arena shooters like halo, splatoon and space marine 2.

I will try this if it falls in that category.

I realize liking arena shooters puts me in the minority of players.

This looked boring to me because the art style is uninspired. I watched the trailer again, and it looked like it had some interesting combat. Big maps, some destructible environment, seems like you have a base? I wonder what the dev's thought would be the hook to this game.

Undefined "sci-fi" and generic "fantasy" smooshed together into a tasteless paste that lacks any kind of meaningful identity. That'll make it hard for anyone to gravitate towards it naturally and super easy for everyone to ignore.
Recycled gameplay elements from over-the-hill shooters with the added stupidity of "maps so big in our PvP game that you need mounts!" as a selling point. The issues with that design are so painfully obvious that they're not even worth writing because you already know what I mean.

It's already dead. The only question is how long before the developers realise it.

Kinda looks like overwatch to me, but they all look the same to me.

In terms of just being picky, when you have an English logo that reads left to right, your glow on it should go left to right too. It's very jarring to have it do the opposite (I'm talking the end of the trailer logo).

This is the gaming version of that "all fantasy tv series look the same" meme. Those hero shooter games steal so much from each other nothing stands out, it's just generic worthless trash.

Dear Game Developers,

Hire me and I'll tell everyone at your studio dozens of times a day that you should be making an Extraction game or a Survival game.

Your most important hire,
Men_in_Boxes

You all will be ashamed of your words and deeds when this is a runaway success.

(okay I don't like the art style either but it's F2P so I'll at least give ex-Titanfall devs a chance.)

Fuck you Geoff...i only got 3 hrs of sleep because of your stupid fake hype shit. And on top of that he dares to say that he asked Capcom for a new Mega Man, what a clown.

I can already imagine all the skins they'll flood the store with. And of course, what amazing name will they give the premium currency this time? Oh, and how long will the seasons be.. just long enough so we can all enjoy a healthy dose of FOMO! This is truly thrilling, a free-to-play experience like no other… so innovative.

Wow GIF

Shame that this is a multiplater F2P title. I love the shooting and abilities, looks very smooth and cool like Borderlands. Would have played/bought it if it was a single player experience. F

I watched that trailer 3x now.

It's higher quality than first impression. Looks like a better Battleborne, a kind of MOBA FPS game. I could see myself playing it during an ARC Raiders lul and before Marathon. There's something here.

Something like halo for me. Infinite would have been great. The beta was perfect. Then they mess it all up with that release.

These GaaS multiplayer gamers and crypto bros are the exact same strain of brain-dead degenerate, just wearing different skin

One is gambling his rent money on a $20 battle pass and 400 hours of slop because "this season is different bro, trust me, the devs posted a roadmap," while the other is aping shitcoins because some Telegram whale said "100x moon soon."

🤮🤮
