I agree. The art direction is less cartoon-like than it seemed the first time I watched the trailer. The characters are made to be attractive and sell cosmetics, and the idea of mounts in a F2P PVP shooter is a fantastic idea for monetization.I watched that trailer 3x now.
It's higher quality than first impression. Looks like a better Battleborne, a kind of MOBA FPS game. I could see myself playing it during an ARC Raiders lul and before Marathon. There's something here.
You don't need to be a massive success to make money as a F2P title, you just need to be making more money than you're spending. I think The Finals is a good example of that. Thanks to well designed cosmetics and frequent new additions to the game, it would seem that the players that are there are spending enough to keep the game successful.
People are critical of microtransactions even when it comes to F2P titles, but they're honestly the most important aspect of a game to get right if a game is going to have a real chance at continued success. Here character design isn't fantastic, but it's far from bad, and it could be very good depending on voice acting, writing, and character abilities.
Good gameplay is very important too. But you could have some of the best gameplay out there, and if people aren't supporting your free game with actual money, then you're not going to succeed. I've honestly found it kind of absurd how many F2P titles have been released with bad character design or bad looking paid cosmetics.
