Highguard - A new sci-fi / fantasy PVP shooter from Titanfall and Apex developers

I watched that trailer 3x now.

It's higher quality than first impression. Looks like a better Battleborne, a kind of MOBA FPS game. I could see myself playing it during an ARC Raiders lul and before Marathon. There's something here.
I agree. The art direction is less cartoon-like than it seemed the first time I watched the trailer. The characters are made to be attractive and sell cosmetics, and the idea of mounts in a F2P PVP shooter is a fantastic idea for monetization.

You don't need to be a massive success to make money as a F2P title, you just need to be making more money than you're spending. I think The Finals is a good example of that. Thanks to well designed cosmetics and frequent new additions to the game, it would seem that the players that are there are spending enough to keep the game successful.

People are critical of microtransactions even when it comes to F2P titles, but they're honestly the most important aspect of a game to get right if a game is going to have a real chance at continued success. Here character design isn't fantastic, but it's far from bad, and it could be very good depending on voice acting, writing, and character abilities.

Good gameplay is very important too. But you could have some of the best gameplay out there, and if people aren't supporting your free game with actual money, then you're not going to succeed. I've honestly found it kind of absurd how many F2P titles have been released with bad character design or bad looking paid cosmetics.

Just an interesting tidbit about The Finals...it lost about 25% of its player base since ARC Raiders launched and the last few seasons they've reduced the amount of gameplay based content to start new seasons. The growth Embark CEO was referring to almost certainly was referring to an increase in MTX options (deluxe Battle Passes, exclusive real money only cosmetics) they've pushed in the last year.

If it doesn't catch on in China, it may have an expiration date.

I agree with this, but all I care about is gameplay and developers staying with the game after launch. Cosmetics are definitely important but have very little appeal for me personally.

This game is absolutely dead on arrival.

Their biggest mistake is making it a fantasy setting FPS. Fantasy and FPS don't work well for gaming. Immortals of A tried and flopped. Doom Dark Ages tried, and it killed the franchise.

In order to make it in the Hero FPS genre you need to have a trailer like the initial Marvel Rivals trailer, where people were cautiously curious.

Highguard actually made me mad while watching the trailer, which I didn't even think was something that was possible.

EDIT: Also in 6 months after release is when you can expect the obligatory: "The Future of Highguard" post.

Looks unappealing as hell, saw somewhere else rightfully calling it "Concord 2"

i should wait for some proper gameplay, but even i don't have high hopes for this.

I don't feel good about this at all. The characters give me the same "asked ChatGPT for character concepts" vibe that Concord did. Then the gameplay just... I don't know, nothing looked enticing or appealing. A bunch of been there done that just smashed together to be "new". It sucks because I know the devs involved are capable of good work but... what is this? Lol.

Legendary reply.

The biggest mistake of this PvP game was giving it a fantasy setting, and then you pick two failed single player games as proof.

In reality, it will fail because it started with the letter H. Haze started with the letter H and flopped...Herpes also starts with the letter H and people don't like herpes.

I swear to God, I'm going to fund a study that seeks to understand why so many people misunderstand multi-player.

I would really like to understand the process by which designs like this get approved.

Did no one at the studio, at some point, said: "hey the heroes in the hero-shooter we're making kind of look like ass"

For you and anyone else looking to make "it's going to fail" posts, not that I blame you for doing so, but what do you want in a modern competitive PVP shooter?

COD clone done right? A new Halo type game? Unreal Tournament type arena shooter? Another Overwatch? A new Planetscape game? What should developers be doing with modern shooters?

People always talk about what they don't want from every newly announced PVP shooter, but people rarely explain what they do want from the genre.
What do I want? Something different that pushes the genre foward, I don't know what, if i did then id be a millionaire.

The artstyle for me personally in this is horrible, doesnt look be doing anything remotely original and good luck playing objective based games with randoms. It can work but it takes a special game, people can't even capture points in COD and Battlefield.

My first reaction was what the fuck is this shit? Never a good sign.

I love the replies on the official tweet. You got safe/paid comments with 10 likes a pop and then critical comments with 1k likes lol.

Gee, I wonder how this will go.

Game doesn't look good, but getting the "final reveal" really hurt this game. Being free to play they'll easily get a niche group of people who like games like Overwatch but want a new cast of characters, but being the big final reveal you get the upset people who will brigade hate this game just because of that.

I guess if the JRPG genre can survive with damn near everyone having that samey anime aesthetic than there's room for this style too.

The game looks fine for what little we were shown making it hard to get a proper feel for how the final thing will turn out. Since it's coming out so soon they should have had a deep dive set up to really go into the details of what the game is rather than just linger as grumpy fucks whine about another multiplayer coming out.

Of all the million different tropes that are shoved into every shooter nowadays, the one I find most cringe is the need to give your group of characters (who are always the "special chosen ones") a name, and then the developers refer to their players by that name.

"See you on the battlefield Wardens, Guardians, Spartans, Freelancers, etc etc etc" Concord was like Freegunners or some shit. it's so bad

This might be the first game ever the Geoff actively hurt by putting in a premium trailer spot and hyping up. I mean hell, anywhere else in the showcase and it's definitely better received. As the final surprise? Yikes.

Nobody on earth will remember where this game was revealed in 72 hours. Literally 0 people on planet earth.

I want an arena shooter like Quake 3 or UT99, with no ADS, and no hero/operator bullshit. Different skins, sure, but every character plays the same.

Cool characters, cool maps, cool weapons, all skill.

As far as I know, this hasn't been attempted in decades.

But why do they even think anybody cares? That's the thing I want to know.

They keep doing this. And failing miserably. This isn't what anyone actually asked for, and yet all these idiot losers keep thinking "It's alright, guys. We're gonna be the one, this time!"

Actually, they tried to do a UT... and then they did a Fortnite instead and figured "Fuck core gamers. Let's get the 14 year olds with mommy's credit card."

The character designs are Gen-Z trash and this is an objective take.

Absolutely awful. Like truly heinous. What is this shit?

Someone photo shop him without hair and he would look like a conehead…

Geoff should be kicked in the fucking nuts for ending on this dead on arrival slop.
