Hmm. It appears that plenty of your vital info is likely out in the wild.

And easily accessible.

https://familytreenow.com

Type your information in and find that it likely has your full name, address, date of birth, family members, and known or presumed associates listed out for public consumption.

I opted out immediately.

Kind of creeped out rn...

Oh, and you might find your estranged father who's been gone since you were five, your ex-boyfriend whom you now hate with a passion, and/or your college roommate on there. Good luck with the feels trip.

These sites have existed for a long time now. You're going to want to opt out of all of them.

But really, its all pulled from public records, so I'm not sure why you're concerned. Anyone who wants that info can get it regardless.

It's better for some not to have it in one handy dandy location, you know? Plus the less sites that have it, the better imo.

newsflash. nobody cares about you or your records mate.

sorry :/

None of this is "vital" info. CC numbers, social security number, stuff like that is vital.

Your address? That's Ron Swanson level paranoia to worry about your address.

i guess if you ever entered information about yourself - added friends/collegaues - visited places with gps on, all within facebook, im not shocked.

now if you are a hermit and never, ever touched social media. then idk bro! illuminati! (aka existed for years i suppose?)

All that info is available from public records. It looks like it guesses possible relatives and associates based on address histories since under possible associates it listed one of my former roommates, the former owner of my condo, and the current owner of a place my parents used to own.

Just be thankful that your personal info is a little harder to get than it was 20 years ago. It used to be that anyone could obtain a credit report on anyone else. It's kind of crazy how accessible that info used to be. Hell, when I was college our student number was our SSN (which was printed on our student ID card). That would never happen now.

PII (personally identifiable information) is stored in a gajillion places.

Ever hit a webform? It's out there.

Ever donate to a campaign? Hoo, boy, is it EVER out there.

There are security regulations (AFAIK) around storage of PII, though admittedly they substantially less significant than security around CC information, for example. PCI compliance is a whole other ball of wax, though a very important one.

yep. and some of it is not wholly correct. For me it lists as associates the people who used to live in my current house, whom i never met. It pulls public records and then tries to build webs based on your address.

Ha! Somehow this lead me to find an ex girlfriend from like 10 years ago. I had looked on Facebook occasionally over the years but no luck.

Sometimes you just have that curiosity about if someone continued to be a fuckup or got their shit together.

Is it weird that it has just one of my dogs on this list? Scraps, guess you aren't part of the fam anymore.

Do they search your vet records too?

Searched my name and they are 10 years off, wrong state, middle name and wrong birth origin.

Guess I'm still not public knowledge.

tons of sites like this.. one of the bigger ones is spokeo.com

have fun...
Lol that site. "Some of this information that you may see is potentially shocking so be prepared." Then they give you a paywall to "unlock everything we have about this person."

Fuck off with that shit.

Is there a list of these sites out there, and is there a way to opt out of all of them?

All of my family members are in this database, except for me...

There's three records for me. 1 that's still at my parent's address, and 2 that are at my college address, both of which say I'm a year older than I am. Nothing that has me where I currently live.

They still think I live in some other city (so far no search engine seems to know where I live now). The phone number they have is either one I never had or is one I no longer live at and doesn't include the area code as the area code is not right for any number I had but would be the first 3 digits of one I used to have but was when I lived with other people (It didn't show me the full one and I'm not about to pay to see it). They do have a valid email address (the one I use to sign up for anything. Sadly it does not get much spam these days but the one I used *once* to sign up for northwest cable news but never for anything else NWCN sold to anyone and everyone and still gets a ton of spam). They have my age right.

So far I'm doing an ok job I think of keeping too much info online if I go by these info finding sites anyways (none seem to get too accurate on me, this is the most accurate one I've seen yet. They actually got the right people attached to me).

Now I wonder what they have on my fake name *grin*. Edit: Apparently they can't find that name at all (I use it on all my social sites now so surprised they didn't find anything).

If you've ever voted in the US I have bad news for you...

You don't even need to have voted. If you own or rent a place or were born and are a human, that info is out there and easy to get. I background check any adult that is near my kids when I'm not around using public records. Its incredibly easy.

All I need is their name and I can usually narrow it down with no other information. I can find out all the places they have lived, what they earn, their birthday. Criminal records, all their relatives, if they have been bankrupt, their estimated wealth. All that info is easy to get.

Usually takes no more than 15 minutes too.

If you're in the US, the majority of your personal information is subject to public record. You can go into the BMV, the county courthouse, police department, any number of different places and request specific people's information. The only thing that is typically redacted is your social security number or health records.

And you can't opt out of it either.

I looked myself up. They knew my age basically. Everything else was my wife's info and her relatives, lol. But still nothing more than their birthdays and some old addresses.

Today GAF learns that a phone book exists and like everything else is on the internet.

Btw your address and landline are hardly "vital" information.

Eh. I opted out only because this site will probably make the rounds on Facebook ( if it hasn't already) and I don't need my bio father's douchebag children trying to contact me again. The site listed his entire side of the family as possible relatives.
