Hobbies you got into really hardcore, but burned out of really quickly

DragoonKain

Neighbours from Hell
In like 2008ish I watched Ninja Warrior everyday for months, I was obsessed with it. And one day I just... stopped, and kinda never went back.

I was really into watching prank videos on Youtube a handful of years ago, and then I just got bored of it and haven't watched any since.

When I was younger I was obsessed with yoyos for about a year. I'd go to the mall with friends and try to get the best one that you could sleep for a while and do tricks with and I remember this one called a Fireball that was really good. This one Asian kid in school was fucking amazing at doing shit with yoyos and I was obsessed with trying to get to his level, and I worked on it everyday for like a year and one day I just got bored of it and realized that I wasted a year on something I really don't give a shit about that much and went back to focusing on my normal hobbies.

I've always stuck with the hobbies I've had for the most part. Basketball, video games, rap music / hip hop, fitness, health although tbh all those are a way of life for me and not so much hobbies at this point

Probably skateboarding. I loved it, still have been really wanting to buy a board to ride around on, maybe learn a new trick or two carefully in time (really worried about getting injured trying to learn tricks) but skateboarding was something I stuck with for a few years then all together sort of just faded out of that scene out of nowhere

WWF / WWE I used to be a huge fan of, and I think I stopped right around the time Chris Benoit was in his prime. I watched a ton from 98 to maybe 2002? And then I was at best watching a few matches every year or so

I can usually tell if there's something I own't stick with for the long term pretty quickly. The closest for me was making my own beer. The only reason I gave it up was because the time commitment got in the way of everything else. It would take the majority of a full day to do one batch.

The only reason I gave up skateboarding was due to injuries. I still watch skateboarding videos to the day. I just live my fantasy in Session or Skater XL. I have been tempted to get a deck just to fuck around with in my garage. A quarterpipe would be a good building project during this quarantine.

I almost got into this, but didn't once I realized those same things. On top of that, I despise the craft beer scene. I'm not impressed no matter how small the batch is, and how sour it is. I'd rather just buy the ones I like. I am not going to make something better than that.

Playing fighting games competitive, I use to go to alot of offline events, do pretty well at my local, did ok at EVO, but now current SJW FGC made me just step back, havent played a fighting game in about 2 years. Unless a new mahvel is coming I'll probably just go back to playing halo once the new xbox comes.

Competitive online games. I get heavily invested to try and reach top tier and when I do, I just hate the game for quite some time before returning to it

For a while I was decent at model painting. Then I just stopped doing it one day and never got the urge to pick it back up.

If you don't get paid for your hobbies they're easy to quit on but that seems to miss the point of having the freedom of a hobby.

Well, the traditional idea of a hobby is an extra activity for people who are already cash solvent. If you aren't, making more money is a constant concern. And as the Joker put it, if you're good at something, never do it for free.

ninja warrior was the same for me.

Also warhammer 40k I got super deep into and then just kinda stopped. I had the minis, played the game, read the books, watched videos almost every day, and now? Well I just kinda stopped. I still like the stuff but just kinda moved on.

Don't have time but I did used to like messing around with websites figuring out how they're built/designed. Just no dam time to experiment and play around

When I was in high school I painted 40k miniatures, then dropped it wholesale. Now, I just watch videos of other people painting on Youtube as some sort of weird ass zen timesink. Their color choices does piss me off sometimes. But watching them block, wash, and hi-light is zen. Building terrain is a good time waster too.

Also weightlifting tryna lift heavy lol I'm focused on endurance now but tryna lift heavy as$ weights was pretty fun takes a lot of energy loading, rest and recovery so I had to give it up

Working out. Lifting weights & that. Big into that in my late teens/early twenties. Dropped it completely these days.

Smoking weed. Got into it at school with my mates. Dropped it for the gym, because I'm dumb but I'm not that dumb.

When I discovered the Raspberry Pi and Beagleboard about 6 years ago, I bought those, a bunch of cheap cases, looked up tutorials non stop. I was gonna learn Python programing but ultimately, I lost interest within a few months.

Collecting old games/consoles. It's all good when you're storing them in your child-hood home but moving all that shit with you so it can just take up space and collect dust isn't worth it.

Star Wars Funko Pop!

I'm surprised my wife didn't kill me.

Vinyl. I was at almost 700 records at one time. I got out for various reasons.

I almost always go back to things eventually, art and writing have been something I've pursued on and off for years since before puberty. I go on blank spells, but then the fever hits and I'm creating again

The only thing I don't think I'll go back to is making soaps and candles, that's basic as all hell, those single, yoga, essential oil mom's and Gwyneth Paltrow can have that

I'll stick with my demented visions and doing my best to transcribe them in word and picture so my kids can make a killing after I've passed on

This, sold almost all my classic consoles and games. Never played them anyway and just bought them to put on one of the many shelf's I needed to store it all.

I can't think of many hobbies I've picked up and dropped, besides maybe drawing/sketching in elementary to middleschool. I took quite a few electives for art in school, and I used to draw a TON when I was a kid. As I got older I found other hobbies that were much more fulfilling for me. I haven't drawn anything with passion in many years.

That being said, it's easier to list hobbies that I've actually stuck with over the years (decades, really). These activities are more of a lifestyle/way of life at this point than simple "hobbies" or "pastimes"... I can't live without them, and I've been hardcore since the beginning :

Reading books (I'm a huge reader. I sometimes flip through 2-3 books a week. I've also been a hobby collector of novels, horror films, posters, etc. since childhood. I was one strange kid, constantly reading Goosebumps)

Skateboarding (I'm obsessed with skateboarding, and have been since around the age of 8. I watch skate parts/videos everyday, and I love everything about the culture of skateboarding. I'm not that great at skating, but I love the physicality of doing flip tricks and grinding curbs/rails)

Guitar / Drums (I've been playing guitar since I was 13, drums for a few less years. Music is a great hobby, and I've found guitar and drums to be both awesome vessels for expressing myself, both in producing music, and just playing around)

Video games (I've been gaming since the Sega Genesis, and it's something I can't live without. Ultimate hobby fueled mostly by PlayStation)

I'm always bouncing all over the place interest wise. Only thing I've really stuck with over the years has been filmmaking, but even that is such a painfully collaborative effort that it often doesnt feel worth it.

I own a guitar I dont know how to play, books I'll likely never read, and weights I often forget to lift.

*sigh*

Paintball, got competitive and owned some gear as well as shotgun range shooting. Nowadays it's an annual paintball event I organise with gaming mates, get a decent turnout from a few interstate travellers and a weekend hanging together. It's not a competitive team or anything anymore. I don't own a marker anymore either, just own mask/goggles, clothes and pods etc. I still love it but don't move like I used to that's for sure.

I used to hate 40k. I kinda like it now but I can see where people can get burned out.

Just for my obesrvation and I'm sort of "new", but it doesn't seem to change much over the years. Warhammer Fantasy seems to have a bit better.

Yeah that experience is what finally pushed me to mostly digital games (which sucks cause I'm a Nintendo fan and they are.. somewhat behind the times with that to say the least :P)

FGC is cancer. Bunch of elitist imbeciles. I'm a huge fighting game fan but the FGC could die a slow and painful death.

Wrestling/backyard wrestling as a kid...

Heavy Metal as a teen.... need to get back into it again.

Dude. Get in! Now!

I did take a four year break in gaming from 2000 to 2004 (mostly because I was broke and couldn't buy new systems) but I could never part with metal. Metal is life

M-Dogg 20 :p Loved that game and all the dvds lol

Fuck yeah. Being a native Detroiter, it split my wig to see ICP in video games at the time.

Game introduced me to New Jack also. It's a lot more fun than most will admit because they're afraid to like anything associated with Juggalos.

Since my ps4 and xbox collection is all digital I wanted to print my own box arts and display them.

Bought like 200 dvd cases for both systems and spent a few weeks teaching myself photoshop. I printed like 10 covers then just stopped for some reason. Now I have a shelf full of blue and green bluray cases

Interesting!

Sudoku. I got to a point where i was just really good at it and ceased caring.

Drawing. I genuinely think i have a unique and marketable drawing style, I'm a Master Degree graduate and my chosen discipline benefits from my drawing, but beyond that I've been doing it since i was like 13 and by now I've got a well developed, idiosyncratic style that started at Sergio Toppi and Dalí, then moved in other directions. Problem is i pick up this hobby now and then with supreme intensity, live it for four or five months, then invariably ditch it for a while as i lose my conviction that anyone would pay for my work.

Got any links to drawings you're willing to share?

RC planes and helis. Crashed a 400 dollar plane and it killed all my enthusiasm for the hobby. Should have known I wasn't ready for a largish WWII plane (particularly one without any flight assistance that current ones have).

Much obliged! Uhm no generally I don't put them in public places, I'd upload a couple here to show but it doesn't seem to be working :/ been a good 13 years since I last visited the website 'deviant art' :p might give it a go if u can recommend a flameproof location :P

I wish I could go to some concerts again, but PHX sucks for that lol Bandcamp has some good stuff though.

I had some Jugallo friends growing up and their cool in my book!

Seems it's a jinx for me to be hardcore into stuff I like.

- Got obsessed with the Matrix, collected everything to do with it and mentions of the Sequel like Magazines etc, Until the Sequels came out

- Same thing with Star Wars in 2012, George had sold to Disney (I didn't mind the MCU) I had liked Star Wars all my life anyway, the prequels didn't phase me (a certain film called The Matrix came out the same time anyway see above ) how could I go wrong??? so I got hardcore more into it, then err the Sequel Trilogy happened, shit

Bonus got obsessed with a few bands artists around the time they put out maybe a not so good album or two, so then i'm left thinking is it me or a coincidence?

So now I tend to half ass like the stuff i'm Into, pay half the attention and keep swapping between interests just not to jinx them, if a proper fan quizzed me on the stuff I liked now I wouldn't be able to pass & those people would think I'm a poser.

Coincidentally anything else I like that's turned out decent to really good even after I start getting into them early on is the stuff that I've never really gone hardcore into.

Airsoft.
Spent over a grand a while back getting all geared up and a nice gas fired AR and side arm.
Problem with airsoft is that it works on the honour system. You raise your hands above head and say hit when you feel yourself hit and walk off field.
You can imagine how well that goes.

I only played one summer.

I wanted to master playing a yo-yo. I bought an expensive one spending my entire allowance after watching some tutorial vids for a few weeks, but gave up on it after a few days of "practicing".

MMORPGs. Got addicted but realized a few years later how much of a time sink it is. Thankfully I at least had the sense not to put any money to them, I just played on private servers.

A few years ago I used to write for websites, usually an op-ed or review once a week. I received a lot of free games and movies on the basis that I'd write a review somewhere down the line. I still blog for my own amusement but have no interest in publishing work on websites. The culture has changed remarkably over the years.

I also got really into fashion when I was at university for some raisin. I couldn't care less anymore.
