A long time ago my friend visted Japan and he told me about the bath houses. He had nothing but praise for them, and told me how it was sooo freaking hot it hurt, but it was great on his muscles. Well tonight my back wasnt so happy so I figure why not take a very hot bath. I fill it up halfway as hot as I can stand it, then get in and after I adjust I make it pour in even hotter so I adjust as it fills. Well it was all good and I was relaxed and felt my pores opening up and my muscles losening and my head was sweating, all expected.

But then after awhile I get REALLY relaxed, then I start tingling like when you are just starting to hyperventilate. I am too relaxed so I dont want to move, but then eventually I get a little woozy and kind of numb feeling so I figure I gotta get up. Well I pull the plug and start getting up but it's kinda hard, and I realize I'm waaaaay too hot, so I turn off the heat and spray myself with cold water, but it didn't feel all that cold.

Then basically my heart started pounding furiously and I felt extremely exhausted, and when I sprayed the cold water on my head my sinuses really cleared up. I though I thought they were clear before but now they really are. So I could barely move enough to get dressed and collapse in my bed, but I did and I just laid there incapacitated while my heart was beating like crazy for 10 minutes or so. Now I'm still pretty weak/relaxed, anyone know what horrible thing I almost did to myself? Heat stroke maybe?

But I guess it worked, my muscles are relaxed, haha.

Onsens rule...best thing for sore muscles and stress relievers. If you don't mind being naked in front of random Japanese people than you will be ok.

Anyway, sounds like you hopped in when it was too hot and stayed in way too long.

You're possibly extremely dehydrated. The rest of your body was sweating, too. Drink plenty of water and get some rest. You'll be fine.

Take this with a big grain of salt and context. :D But I learned on Detective Conan that extreme temperature change can be bad on the heart.

It was too hot to stay in that long, and it sounds like the rapid temperature changes were messing with your body's systems. You'll be all right though, just don't do it again! Fucking around with your heart can be dangerous.

Also, do those bathhouses have anything in the water to make it 'softer' or something like that? Say like Epson salts? I'd wager you don't need to have water that hot to relax your muscles, just throw something nice in with the water.

a couple of years ago, my therapist of ayear told me that when the body heats up and then cools down, i.e, from a bath or shower, it is a naturally relaxing thing and can make you sleep. ............ just don't cool off that fast.

Happened to me one of the 1st times I went to a Japanese onsen. You should soak a towel in water, and put it over your forehead while in the very hot bath...don't ask me why but it works. I saw many Japanese men doing this, and believe me it wasn't comfortable going up to an ass naked man asking him why he had a towel on his head :p

Sounds like your heart just went into overdrive after you doused yourself with cold water. (extremely high heart rate while not doing physical activity will cause the symptoms you felt... I think). How high was your heart rate you think? Probably nothing to worry about, but I would avoid taking the hot bath and then dousing yourself with cold water. Maybe next time at your doctor, ask him if he can explain the medical reasons for that.

Don't do something this moronic ever again, you're lucky you didn't die from a heat stroke, the difference with bath houses is that they know what they are doing and there are other people around if you get in trouble.

I like to take extreamly hot showers. The water is so hot, that if it touches any part of my skin for more than about a min, it will burn the skin there. So I have to keep moving the spray around, so it don't stay in one area to long. It hurts so much, but it feels so good. After I am done showering my skin looks bright red. You should try it.

I had this happen to me once in a steam bath, and felt like I was going to pass out as a result. It was because my sorry ass was out of shape, and couldn't take the increased heart rate. (Even though I was at my proper weight at the time, my cardio system was worthless.)

Anyway: Google to the rescue!

Another benefit of steam bathing is that it has a stimulating effect on the cardiovascular system. The pulse rate increases from 75 beats per minute (average) to between 100 - 150 beats per minute during a 15 - 20 minute session. This increases blood circulation but not blood pressure, since the heat causes the tiny blood vessels in the skin to expand, accommodating the increased blood flow.

So I guess that cold water = increased BP, problem solved!

I wouldn't call that a "benefit."

That must have been it. My heart rate increased like crazy, which probably sent oxygen to everywhere faster making me tingly like I was hyperventilating. When I stood up that was probably similar to any sort of getting up after laying down for awhile but to a greater extent, then the cold water probably increased blood pressure with my heart sitll going sending me all outta whack.

It was a crazy ride.

you know i always figured everyone just knew that extreme temperature change is a big bozo no-no. I mean, haven't all of us at one point or another put hot water on you hand after playing in the snow and your fingers felt like they would explode?
