Hey everyone,

Eventually, I would like to be fully self employed and work from home, and I'm trying to come up with a good setup for a home office. My current apartment is quite small, but I think I should be able to get some sort of desk in, which I really need. Does anyone have any ideas for how to fit some sort of home office into my apartment?

Here's the floorplan:

And here are some pictures showing my current setup:

The bed is built in and cannot be moved. I'm pretty open to replacing any of the current furniture with better alternatives.

Thank you. ✌️

What are you trying to achieve? Your pictures show already show a small desk for your laptop and a dining table that can double up as a larger workspace. There's not really much room to improve unless you're allowed to demo the inbuilt stuff and do a dedicated reno. Maybe wall mount your monitor on an arm mount or rack mount your PC components above your desk.

Renovations to optimize that size of space only make sense when living in places like mine where extra space is $1,500-$2,000 psf. You're better off moving to a place with a separate bedroom or renting a co-working desk if you intend to work full time at home.

You need the best chair your budget can get you. By far, the most important thing.

I can't see if that's a laptop or desktop. Regardless, having a foam bar for your wrists is also very important. I had a wrist injury due to long periods in the same position.

That monitor should be higher. The top part of the monitor should be a bit higher than your eyes, I believe.

The current setup is working okay for now since it's only part time, but I'm feeling need (and want) for a proper desk for whenever the situation goes full-time.

You need to find the builder who designed that floor plan full of strange corners and angles and send them to a firing squad.

My recommendation: remove the shelf where your TV is. Make a one-piece table from the bed frame to the wall. Put all your stuff under the table.

Hang the TV on the wall (and the monitor on an articulated wall mount)

Buy a quality chair.

edit. Besides the awkward angle, you have a fucking pilar... so that's not exactly your floorplan...

Looks like you could put a fold out table in your kitchen area. Set up the office facing the Big window. But the space is so limited.

I would just turn that corner into your office. Find a way to mount a large TV and Monitor on the wall if allowed.

If you can swing it I agree/recommned these:
  • Standing/Sitting desk - will give you a bit more room under the desk for storage and allow you to get some nominal exercise throughout the day. You also need a bit more room for your keyboard/mouse/arms with your current setup.
  • Take this from a 48 year old dude with 40+ years of working on a keyboard/playing with controllers...having wrist/nerve issues in your 40's fucking SUCKS. Fix your hands/wrists/posture support NOW so you are not dealing with "old man hands" later in life.
  • Desk Chair - Spend some cash here - your back and posture will thank you in a few years.

I think the first thing is, what is your plan for this?

Get home office
???
Profit!

I have a home office and it consists of any desk I could get for free that would comfortably hold a monitor mouse and keyboard and any chair I could get for free that was comfortable to sit on. Then when the money comes in I can upgrade.

Why do you want to be self employed?
