Here's the situation:
- Have recently moved into a brand new apartment.
- Have installed a new air conditioner
- Receiver (Onkyo TXDS series), which used to work perfectly before, now seems to cut out the sound completely, even though the screen blinks away brightly and cheerily.
The symptoms:
- when switching on from standby, everything seems to come on, but there's no sound.
- set the speakers to "test"mode, no sound.
- sound comes on after a few minutes and only after you switch around the surround settings.
- sometimes the sound will work perfectly the entire night. Other times, it'll cut itself off after a few hours.
- a/c compressor, light switches and other appliances cause a brief dip in sound.
- forwarding a chapter on a DVD or just fast-forwarding can also cause the sound to cut out.
Trouble-shoot suggestions:
- An electrician friend has told me that the a/c and other household items (washing machine, instantaneous gas hot water heater) might be sending voltage spikes through my system, causing it to cut out. Suggests buying a voltage regulator.
- I personally think my receiver needs to be replaced.
Before I invest in anything new, are there any HT nutters who know better?
