Home Theater Trouble-shoot - I hate my receiver

Here's the situation:
- Have recently moved into a brand new apartment.
- Have installed a new air conditioner
- Receiver (Onkyo TXDS series), which used to work perfectly before, now seems to cut out the sound completely, even though the screen blinks away brightly and cheerily.

The symptoms:
- when switching on from standby, everything seems to come on, but there's no sound.
- set the speakers to "test"mode, no sound.
- sound comes on after a few minutes and only after you switch around the surround settings.
- sometimes the sound will work perfectly the entire night. Other times, it'll cut itself off after a few hours.
- a/c compressor, light switches and other appliances cause a brief dip in sound.
- forwarding a chapter on a DVD or just fast-forwarding can also cause the sound to cut out.

Trouble-shoot suggestions:
- An electrician friend has told me that the a/c and other household items (washing machine, instantaneous gas hot water heater) might be sending voltage spikes through my system, causing it to cut out. Suggests buying a voltage regulator.
- I personally think my receiver needs to be replaced.

Before I invest in anything new, are there any HT nutters who know better?

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
Sounds like you don't have your speakers set up properly. Could be a hort in the speaker wire connection. You have your +/-'s straight?

Change outlets also.

If you're looking at a new receiver, put some thought behind going totally digital. You can get a nice Panasonic for under $300 w/out HDMI switching. They're nice and tiny.

I've tried changing outlets - no change.

I'll re-check the connections on my speakers again, but I'm pretty sure they're fine. Like I said, sometimes the whole system works perfectly; other times, when it doesn't work, it's always all 5.1 channels that fail.

I've checked the connections across all my inputs and have tested it simultaneously with consoles, multiple DVD players, iPods, VCRs and even the built-in radio. When the sound cuts out, the sound from all of those inputs cut out.

The connections are the most likely problem, but also check your manual to see if there is a "reset microprocessor" command (which the Denon's can do).

Sounds like you need a power conditioner, does the reciever flash anything like "PROTECT" at all when this happens ?

Nope. No flashing messages of any kind. It just does everything it's supposed to do except produce sound :p
