Homeworld 3, will we ever see it?

One of the best PC games. I loved the cinematic feel of Homeworld 2 and the very challenging gameplay. I hope a Homeworld 3 happens even if it won't be as good as the previous ones. This thread reminds me I have yet to buy Homeworld: Cataclysm.

Suffice to say, if I could change Cataclysm's art direction, I'd be changing a lot. The game is fun as hell though. If you liked the two Homeworlds, I highly recommend Cataclysm.

I thought the same thing while working on it. Homeworld had a beautiful graphic minimalist cold visual while Cataclysm had a more deliberate approach. If I could go back and redo it I think there would be a lot I would change on the art and audio side.

The game design, mission structure, and multiplayer balancing were the strongest elements of the game and thought they were great. I hope they still hold up today.

Homeworld 2 was too dumbed down (where have all my formations gone!?!)

Have you tried PDS ;]
2012 Update. THE WEBSITE IS DEAD. It's happening!

I actually found my Homeworld and HW:C discs, the keys are right on the covers! Wish Starcraft did that >:\

Sorry for the insane bump, but I didn't think this was worthy of a new thread (if it is, please split bump). For anyone interested in some comments on Relic, THQ and the possibility of Homeworld 3 really need to read this thread on Relic News:

Here are some quotes from UberJumper (who presumably is "in the know"):

What I get out of that site and that post is that they like Homeworld and they want to make a game like it. But without some concept art, some backstory (and it can't be set in the Homeworld universe, because they don't own the IP) and what not, they've got nothing at this time to offer all of us that want a Homeworld 3.

It's like at E3 2003 when Relic wasn't able to show Homeworld 2. I was at the booth for the ORB developers, when I was introduced to the guy as being from Relicnews he went "Hey this is Homeworld 2!" (since he knew Homeworld 2 wasn't at the show). Meanwhile I'd just been shown Homeworld 2's E3 Trailer by Alex Garden in a private showing at Microsoft's booth.

Sadly, this time around Homeworld 3's really not in development.

Homeworld was magic. You're never going to find another game as awesome as it was for its time. Homeworld 2 was a decent attempt but it's development was filled with problems. Homeworld 3 won't happen because unless you can pick up and play the game in seconds, you won't sell many copies. If you can't prove that your game's going to be easy to play AND awesome in your pitch meeting when trying to get funding from the Studio, you'll never get it made.

Couple that with pretty well the entire original art and design staff of Homeworld leaving Relic, with a handful of Homeworld 2 developers left on staff, Homeworld's done. Put a fork in it.

(I want Homeworld 3 more than the rest of you combined).

You have to understand, it's not Relic making the decision, it's THQ. You also have to understand that THQ is on it's last legs. They're looking for ways to make money quickly. A 3d space RTS that hasn't sold millions of units (I think combined, the Homeworld sales, including HW:C and HW2 is only 1.5 million or so) won't be what they're looking at. As you should also know, critical success doesn't equal financial success. THQ needs a winner, and they're not lead by competent people.

Hell, even Space Marine, which was a pretty good potential start for a new IP, which had easy to pick up controls and was a lot of fun isn't getting a sequel when it very well should! THQ for some reason doesn't want to spend money on something unless it's a sure fire hit.

RTS games are pretty niche (with the exception of maybe Starcraft, which is the exception to the rule). RTS games are *hard* for Joe Average gamer to pick up. Remember, WE get RTS games, we could play Homeworld. We're NOT the target audience (for THQ).

THQ purchased the IP back from Sierra/Vivendi when Ron Moravek was still at Relic/THQ. There's no one left at Relic carrying the flame aside from a couple of Homeworld 2 devs.

And the following are from Noun, who works at Relic:

Just to clear up a few things.

1. I have never heard that we would make a new Homeworld game if there was a 15,000 signature petition. These days you can get a that many people to sign a petition in favour of kicking puppy dogs, so we wouldn't allow that to alter whether or not we were making a game. We understand that a portion of our community would love to see a new Homeworld game, but we also know that a large number of people would love to see us working on Company of Heroes, Dawn of War and Space Marine games. Maybe even Impossible Creatures, though they don't tend to be that vocal.

2. We did not pay for that article in PC Gamer as claimed in this thread. What sort of logic does it make to pay for coverage of a game that we haven't announced yet? We pay for ads, not coverage when we are promoting a game.

3. The Tweet quoted was not in any way suggesting that we were making HW3, or that we weren't. It's misreading like this that discourages companies from taking a more active role in engaging with their community. If we have to be deadly serious in all our communications then that's no fun for everyone, but anything approaching humor seems to push someone's buttons the wrong way.

Homeworld's a game that's very close to lots of people at the studio. A lot of the staff here cut their teeth on the original, and a lot of the newer staff wanted to work at Relic specifically because of Homeworld. We love the game as much as any of you, but that doesn't change whether or not returning to that is the right step for us in the future. If we do make a Homeworld 3 it's because we feel we have something new to do that will live up to the original game. We don't want make a new one just to get a few quick dollars. While we listen to our fans, we also don't want to make a game just to appease them. A disapointing half-assed HW3 would be worse than none.

We also have no plans to sell the Homeworld IP. Also who would want it beyond a small but dedicated fanbase? It would be much easier and cheaper for another studio to simply invent their own universe (but it's space lol) than adapting ours.

I didn't say that Homeworld could not be a profitable series, I said that I didn't believe that another company would pay for the IP when they can just create their own new one. While it has a dedicated fanbase it's not like Homeworld is Star Wars where it's going to sell a million copies based on the name alone.

Doubtful, but if it came out, I'd be there day 1.

Homeworld is awesome; just replayed throught it and Cataclysm (moving on to Homeworld 2) before Christmas. Was flawless on Windows 7, Core I7 920.

Salvaging is so satisfying.

Man, some of my favorite moments of the Homeworld series were inbetween the insane battles and just taking in the atmosphere and music. One of the greatest games ever made.

Salvaging is so satisfying.

Snatch and grabs are awesome in the original; sending in a fighter/bomber strikeforce, bring in the frigates, then jump in a carrier filled with salvage corvettes and snag capital ships.

I miss Marine boarding craft, too...

Now I'm sad. Fucking hell. I don't need any more CoH or W40K...just more Homeworld.

At the rate Relic is going, we're more likely to see a Warhammer 40k based space fleet game then we are to see Homeworld 3.

Which I'd be happy for, because I do like Battlefleet Gothic...just ANYTHING to get Relic back doing their magical spaceborne RTS business again, even if the original geniuses are scattered to the wind.

Strong urge to play again. Was never really into genre, but this game got me with the music and space.
I love space.

I would like to have space simulator with no goals set..I just want to fly and see what I won't be able to see in my life...(still hoping for being millionaire).

Cataclysm always felt like a more refined better version of the first game. AS a result I completed Cataclysm a good 5+ times compared to only playing through Homeworld about 2 times or so.

Homeworld 2 was fucking ridiculous though. Couldn't get past the third mission...

I hate to be "that guy" but man I wish these games were on Steam

Yep...le sigh

I actually agree I liked Cataclysm's story a lot better.

Homeworld 2's story... and I love all the homeworld games... is atrocious... sorry homeworld fans. Please don't forget i'm one of you too lol

I had no problem with the story.
Except for how weird they got with the hyperspace cores.
I also never understood why they rebuilt a traditional mothership instead of a more heavily armed craft.

I liked the missions a lot more. Would do a Let's Play, but :effort:

I have one massive plothole i can share.

Remember when Makaan was trying to destroy the Balcora Gate to stop the Hiigaran's from reaching Sajuuk? Makaan needed to unite the 3 core to activate Sajuuk and only through activating Sajuuk, could you escape the center of the galaxy (which Balcora was an access to).

So if Karan just let the Vaygrs destroy Balcora Gate... Makaan would have been trapped with nothing to do cause the Hiigarans had the final core that Makaan needed to activate Sajuuk...

So... is Makaan like the stupidest commander ever or what? What would have happened if he successfully stopped Karan from reaching Sajuuk... he would have stopped himself from reach Sajuuk in the process... I seriously don't understand the logic behind that mission setup and story progression

So many hours playing Homeworld... miss playing it, as it just had this "epic" feel to it like playing somehow "mattered", so bring on Homeworld 3 already!

That's easy. Makaan was only trying to slow down Karen so he could set the ambush on the other side of the gate. Even if Makaan destroys Karen on this side of the gate he can still retrieve the core.

Karen wanted to unite the three as much as Makaan so she was going through the gate no matter what.

That missions could be a real dick with the Battlecruiser spawn. However, the second time I played through the campaign I had an easy go of it for some reason. I lost a lot of smaller craft attacking the charges or whatever they were.

It's weird how much I steam-rolled through that game the second time i played it.

If I had to honestly answer what my favorite RTS was I think it would have to be Homeworld (any one in the series, really). There's just so much I love about these games. To reiterate what lacinius said, they have a supremely epic feel to them without...feeling like they're trying to be 'epic'.

It really sucks that we'll never get another one.

Hiigarans needed to awake sajuuk to have a chance to retake their homeworld i think.

Right this would make sense but there was no way Makaan could have know that Karan would have steamrolled. I mean if Makaan really wanted to fix that battle... he would have brought most of his forces back with him. Leave, either an under matched or evenly matched force to "defend the gate" and likely go after Karan rather than focus so much on destroying the nodules.

Basically, tactically, the game creators wanted to make the mission hard since Makaan fixing the battle would have made it actually easy (not that, THAT'S stopped game creators before tbh *hinthintfable2*). However, story wise the other fleet's mass positioning and language doesn't really support that theory although of course it is all up to interpretation

But personally speaking, after analyzing the battle positioning of Makaan's fleet position, it really seemed like Makaan was legitimately trying to stop Karan which wouldn't make sense in the grand scheme of things in the story

Hiigarans needed to awake sajuuk to have a chance to retake their homeworld i think.

Right but just the "will" to do something isn't an automatic guarantee that it would be done. Despite whatever BS that writes like to put in that it's the "will" of the people or a character that's the key reason for success, that's actually complete BS and the "will" to do something is absolutely no guarantee that something will be done

Is that really coming out? I heard that was vaporware
Idk. Hence the hopefully.

That whole site seems to not be doing too well with their "We are currently revising the concept of GamesPlant" message on the front page so I imagine that doesn't reflect well for the projects that tried to get funded through it (or maybe they'll really be back in just a few days, I dunno). Nexus II is listed as "finished" alongside everything else but I can't see if any met their target anywhere... Maybe they should try again through kickstarter that more people know of and get more press than last time...

Maybe not, but Nexus 2 will hopefully fit the bill.

I wonder if that funding is still active, unlike kickstarter pages it doesn't seem to show progress... The list of supporters isn't too long either... But also unlike kickstarter you supposedly do get a share of the profits in return for a heftier investment...
It used to show progress. Unfortunately, I am pretty sure the fundraising period ended at around 33% of their goal :\

Nexus2 has overstepped the €100,000 threshold! Let's go for the rest...
That was on December 10th, so I doubt they made the €400,000 goal.

They really should give it another shot with kickstarter then, I never heard of gamesplant before that thread and even if it got some press for the game itself (though I don't remember seeing it mentioned all that much) people are probably more reluctant to using sites they've never heard of before. Though I guess they also lack a big name for hype which might be the real reason for the failure... But I thought they could manage just for the concept alone in enthusiast circles even if not many heard of Nexus...
