Works great on my iPhone 4!

• The following devices have been tested against Hotmail ActiveSync
o WM 6.x
o WP7
o iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad
o Nokia E-series, S-series, N-series running Mail for Exchange application

• More devices will be added to the above list over time.

• Users are welcome to try with other devices but support may be limited in the near term.
o Android Support: Hotmail team will add Android to list of supported devices in the coming months after testing is completed.
o Access from Android 2.1 is NOT supported due to known client issues on Android 2.1.
o There are users successfully syncing from Hotmail via the default application or the Touchdown application on Android 2.2.

And here's the set up instructions:

WM 6.x Setup

The steps are identical between WM 6.1 and 6.5. If deleting an existing profile, make sure to back up the data on the device before configuring the ActiveSync profile for Hotmail access.

1. Click on “ActiveSync” under Start menu or under Programs.
2. Click on the link above to configure the ActiveSync profile for Hotmail access. You may need to delete the existing profile if it is already in use.
3. Disable automatic detection of Exchange server settings.
4. Enter your full Hotmail address in User name field. Enter password. Leave Domain blank.
5. Enter m.hotmail.com in the Server address field.
6. Select the data to sync. Hotmail supports all 4 data types via ActiveSync.
7. The device will connect to Hotmail ActiveSync and perform an initial sync for the selected data.
8. Successful synchronization will result in device showing a screen like this.

iPhone Setup

The steps are similar for the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. On a device that supports only a single ActiveSync profile, make sure to back up the data on the device before configuring the ActiveSync profile for Hotmail access.

1. Click on Settings. Under Settings, click on “Mail, Contacts, Calendar”.
2. Click on “Add Account” in the Accounts page.
3. Click on “Microsoft Exchange” to configure Hotmail access.
4. Enter your full Hotmail email address in both Email and Username fields. Leave Domain blank. Enter your password. In the Description field, enter a name, e.g Hotmail.
5. Enter m.hotmail.com for the Server name.
6. If access succeeds, you will see this page. Select the data to sync. Click on Save.

Nokia Setup – Mail for Exchange

The following steps are for the Mail for Exchange application on most Nokia smartphones. If the existing ActiveSync profile is already in use, make sure to back up the data on the device before configuring the ActiveSync profile for Hotmail access.

1. Click on “Mail for Exchange” icon in the Application menu.
2. Click on “Sync mode”. You may need to delete the existing profile if already used to configure it for Hotmail access.
3. Enter your full Hotmail email address in Email address and Username fields.
4. Enter m.hotmail.com in the Exchange server field.
5. Select the Initial sync option for calendar, e.g. “Delete items on phone”.
6. Select the Initial sync option for tasks, e.g. “Delete items on phone”.
7. Select the Initial sync option for contacts, e.g. “Delete items on phone”.
8. Configure the Sync mode to be either push or pull at a specified interval.

MS just redesigned their Hotmail interface, along with a new live essentials to a new beta, and putting up the office web apps. Supposedly it's pretty good now.

Also a ton of people in the EU especially the UK use a ton of MS services like MSN.

Windows Live Hotmail is currently the world's biggest e-mail provider. It claims to have more than 360 million members and it handles more than eight billion messages per day.

derp.
I like the Live Mail layout much more than the one Gmail had in place. Luckily, Google changed it, because the shit looked like a messy ass room before hand.

I use hotmail because I've had it for 15+ years and it would be a pain in the ass to change my primary email address to gmail. I still use gmail frequently but that's typically my spam email

As much as I hate using my hotmail address I've had since 1998. At least I don't get other peoples mail all the time like I do with my Gmail account. What's up with that Google?

Same for me, just laziness on my part as I cba to change everything over, plus Hotmail isn't too bad, I've never really had a problem with it.

Why wouldn't you? I've never noticed much of a difference between any of the email providers I've used.
Interface. Speed. Labels. Message threading. Gchat.

Gmail's just always seen more intuitive to me. I have friends that have to use Live for work, and they always complain about it.

For the record, I maintain a Live account alongside my Gmail and my work e-mail.

This has never happened to me.

That, and my hotmail address is just my name @hotmail.com. Can't get that (or anywhere close) with Gmail now. I've tried.

This is actually a really nice update on my iPhone4. Not only does it push now, but it syncs so that when I read or delete someone on my phone it updates it on my desktop's Windows Live Mail. No more deleting things on my phone throughout the day only to be greeted by them again when I get home and open Live Mail.

Do you guys remember Compuserve? Good times.

Yup. I also remember using my modem to dial up a local BBS and download Ultima Underworld one floppy at a time.

What's your point?

Guess what a Compuserve image search brought up?

Oh? The web-based UI? I never use that.
I could definitely understand Google doing a better job with it, though...

Hotmail is still big in certain developing countries. I don't think I know anyone who uses it as their primary email anymore in the US.

Oh, yeah, using an e-mail client would change things.

I met purely in terms of using the web client. Hotmail/Live's a lot better than it used to be, but it's missing some features. And the whole Helvetica/Tahoma look is too understated for a webpage, IMO, even though I love the Windows Phone 7/Zune interface.

It did. Prodigy was for kids.

AOL 1000hour discs made for great coasters in college.

Is that right, Prodigy was for kids? We had Prodigy. God, I thought I was old. Compuserve, what the hell is that? Switched to AOL after Prodigy. I remember getting it for free...probably illegally, but can't remember. AOHELL? This is all off-topic. WTG!

I know people that still use Hotmail. It's more a stubborn reaction to not wanting to switch to anything "new" and "hip".

I still have a sister that uses hotmail and a brother that uses yahoo. It's really annoying because my family emails each other as a group often and they keep on screwing up the threaded email because their piece of shit emails don't have it.

Nah, just can't be bothered if it's going to be a hassle.

Tried to switch to gmail earlier this year, but google completely fucked up the email transfer. Haven't tried again since.

Try it from scratch, and leave it overnight when you're not using it. I just did it for a coworker who had an assload of email and it worked perfectly.

Anyway, I used NetZero for a while. Free 56K internet -- it was amazing.

I love the "People still use Hotmail?" crowd.

Gmail only passed AOL in terms of number of active users a year ago. Yahoo was number 2 with Hotmail at number 1.

It was kind of a surprise to me, but I'm not totally blown away by it.

I used ICQ once in middle school, and I totally was solicited by some creepy dude.

Logged off and deleted it promptly. :lol

Who's number 1 doesn't have any influence on mindshare or who's the most innovative and likely to stick around.

Blogger, LiveJournal, and Myspace were number 1 in their categories at one time, too. Gmail is clearly the innovator and mindshare leader in e-mail. Every new Hotmail feature is just something Gmail already did years earlier. It's playing catch-up.

People still use Hotmail?

In university I did a lot of group projects, and in every group there was the one person who used hotmail and without fail they were always an idiot and a slacker

Did they ever fix the spam filter with hotmail? thing sucks so hard, would mark a item as spam and the next day I would still get email from them...

I mainly use my Hotmail account... my reasons being simple:

I'm in Canada and MSN is much bigger then any other IM client, so having a hotmail account is necessary.

My email is ideal (firstname.lastname@hotmail.com) versus some random email i'd have to use at Gmail.

I use my school email for important emails.

And to be honest, I tried Gmail for a brief period and found that I would receive emails faster in my Hotmail account, whereas my emails would normally lag in Gmail (my brother has this same issue). As for the UI, i definitely agree that Gmail looks A LOT nicer, but i've set up my blackberry to do most of my emailing business so now I don't really have to deal with interfaces anymore so... it doesn't really effect me. Although MSN has improved a ton over the years (though is still a little broken, especially compared to gmail).

Maybe I'll give it another try.

Not sure why people knock it, it's at least on par with Gmail with their latest update. Its integration of Facebook, Microsoft Office, Messenger, and SkyDrive put it over the top for me.

I haven't had any spam reach my inbox in months now. I'd say at this point it's almost too strict, I've found emails from friends in my junk filter several times from what I would think were reputable sources.
