How Dare People Compare Balatro to Slay the Spire

First of all, if you're looking for something similar then look no further than RogueBook, it has everything and makes a few interesting twists on it such as having a 3D world.

Back to Balatro, I'm glad I didn't buy it, playing it now on PS+.

It is repetitive, you continue to start from 0 after each game, you don't unlock exciting new characters or entire new replacement decks.
And as for the game itself, it is just poker, with some jokers that do different things thrown in.
You can unlock cards that you can later unlock in new playthroughs but they are completely uninspired.
Just text on awfully drawn cards.

It doesn't have a stitch on Slay the Spire.

Tell me you suck at Balatro, without telling me you suck at Balatro

I'm with you OP, I liked and played way more both Slay The Spire and RogueBook than Balatro. Slay the Spire is really good.
The thing I like in Balatro is the menu theme.

Slay the Spire got boring after about 50 runs and it's just annoying to run the robot and not get the cards that make it fun.

Balatro is probably timeless although I haven't gone back to it as I'm playing Gungeon at the moment.

Balatro is incredible. Slay the Spire just wasn't for me, but I can see the universal love that gets heaped up on it and take the majority's opinion as gospel with the exception of the art which is ugly.

I have hundreds of hours in both across multiple platforms, love them - but for me Balatro definitely deserves to be compared to STS as a game with much more replayability and variety.

I'll compare Gold Stakes Ante 8 into Endless with A20 that goes for the Heart (Which I doubt OP has done with every Deck / Character if they had to make this thread).

My problem with STS is that unless you are Watcher / Defect (who can actually juggle multiple builds, which is the beauty of Balatro), you generally have to have your direction sorted and/or decided for you (based on Boss Reward) by the end of Act 1. I enjoy and prefer the pivoting potential of Balatro deep into runs.

Because of that, and how much shoe-horned you are into specific builds, STS got to a point where I kind of just got bored with it. Pick Ironclad, wanting to go Exhaust, but you have to play some boring Strength build all the time. Silent is just terrible and not satisfying even with Poison multipliers going off. Then that leaves Defect and Watcher who there are no reasons to play a specific way but just bruteforce and always win with what you get. I tried to offset this doing the Daily Seeds and stuff for fun, but just got over it. The game is slower and when you brick or do a missplay after 10-20 minutes it just feels like a waste a time. You can beat Ante 8 in Balatro in 10 minutes.

So another thing about the playstyles and replayability - Balatro just has a lot more fun options. Plasma, Anaglyph and Erratic. They're just mine but I know a lot of people love Ghost, Gold and Checkered. They can all be built different ways, and the recyling + economy just gives you way more pivot and points of opportunity to change up. And no, you're not locked in with Hand Levels either, usually you only need around +6 pre-Ante 8 to be safe before going all in on something else in Endless.

So yeah what a dumb thread. You clearly don't know Balatro or even STS ("you don't unlock exciting new characters or entire new replacement decks") to compare them.

I like both, but can only play them in small amounts.

If I had to pick one it would be Balatro, although I wish the game wasn't so fucking ugly.

So there's more of us.
For a while there I thought I was the only one not enjoying Balatro. I got it around release, since everyone and their grandmother praised it as the best thing since sliced bread. But I couldn't help feeling very bored while playing it. No rush, nothing.
I appreciate that a small developer gets a giant hit like it though! That's really awesome.

Slay the Spire is almost up there with my favourite rougelikes btw. And probably my favourite deck builder. Game is pure drugs.

Same here, I enjoyed Slay the Spire well enough to complete a few runs then I didn't feel the need to keep going. It's not even as good, in my opinion, as Monster Train.

In fact, Monster Train 2 comes out in a few weeks, and they're doing a Balatro crossover

I tried Monster Train on Gamepass (I think) and only did a few runs. Truth be told, I just don't think this genre is really for me which makes Balatro even more remarkable. I do like poker though which helps and the style reminds me of playing video poker in the 90s at the officers club on base.

I'll stick with Baten Kaitos thanks.
i find Megaman Networks are also cool.
I haven't play baiten kaitos yet. well, i think it's the time I should try then.
speaking of baiten, I recall from soft ever made one deck building action rpg in GC, i haven't play it yet though.

and anyway, card RPG went long way.
the first I knew (and my first RPG) is dragon ball RPG in NES.
it's bit funny IMO, after all these time, card based RPG now gaining trends again

Now CAPCOM, please make New Megaman Exe : ))

I bought both at the same time for a holiday.
Loved slay the spire, finished act 1-4 (heart boss). Then played balatro which was pretty fun but I got bored a lot quicker and dropped it after completing a few decks

Less than 50 for me.

Balatro > Slay the Spire.
But Hearthstone is the best of them.
Unless Inscryption is superior?

I don't understand the need to always compare.

So yes, i'm agrre with this thread : « How Dare People Compare Balatro to Slay the Spire »

Didn't buy it myself but if you would like a indie MMBN you could try this as well. But it's purely a roguelite with little if any story.

I think MMBN pretty much died after Star Force. And IMO Battle Network > Star Force in general.

I found the Fromsoft game. It's called Lost Kingdoms. Never knew this even existed. Kind of want a port of it tbh.
