Balatro is coming to Xbox Game Pass

AJUMP23

Parody of actual AJUMP23
Completed my first full run today. Used an unconventional method probably. Stone cards with a stone card point multiplier joker and a stone card creator joker. Then I had rank 8 full house and 2 pair. That really put in a lot of work.

Despite not liking this on Steam or Apple Arcade, I've been playing it some more on Game Pass to see if I can see why everyone raves about it.

I've finished a few runs and got well past level 8 with various different decks. I still don't really get it though.

I thought it was meant to be a poker roguelike, but there doesn't seem to be a roguelike element at all. You don't play, fail, then get stronger on your next run. The unlocks are meaningless, because they can appear at any time. Once you've figured out how it works, it's always the same. Upgrade a particular hand, get the jokers that maximise it, guaranteed win. Starting again with all your good cards removed is boring, I want to keep my custom deck at least.

Cue the discussion that "roguelike" is not "roguelite". In "roguelike" games you fail and you start from scratch again, just like in the original Rogue.

If the genre is purely about starting again from scratch, maybe that's why it's not for me. It's like Super Mario Bros, where you have to repeat all the dull early levels every time you play, versus Super Mario World, where you get to keep your progress.

I've been playing since they added to GP. This is a truly great game. Do not get hung up on the poker. It's a rogue-lite and one of the best ones.

They really don't let you get much farther in endless mode though. I had a God-like setup on one run and was racking up like a billion points per hand. Only got to like the 14th ante before the level needed 72 Billion to beat.
