How do I Copy a DVD Movie?

I wanna make a copy of a DVD movie (for back-up purposes of course..).
I've yet to do something like this with my DVD Burner.
I use Nero.

The thing is, I only have DVD-R discs on hand. I've heard that +R are generally better for movies and stuff...
...but as long as I can watch them on my computer (using my DVD Burner), I'll be happy.

So can I use -R discs?

Thanks for any info - cause I'm too lazy to google.

Download DVDecrypter. It will copy the files to your computer, and you don't even need to burn them to be able to watch them later.

DVD-R work fine, BTW.

You can use either -R or +R. -R are actually compatible with more DVD players but +R has the benifit of being able to be bitset to -ROM.

In any case, all you need is DVD Decrypter. Just have it rip the DVD you want into an .ISO and then burn that .ISO onto a DVD-R with Nero. Some DVDs arn't so easy because they're dual layer and won't fit on just a regular DVD-R. In that case, you'll need to use Nero Recode 2 (if you have the full nero suite) or DVD Shrink, also free like DVD Decrypter which will recompress the dual layer DVD into something that'll fit onto a single layer DVD-R.

Since you're new to this, go download DVDShrink.

Thank me later.

It's +R that's not as widely compatible, but that's mainly if your player is old as sh!t.

DVDShrink doesn't let you get rid of extras, but I found out that if you don't copy them, the disc will run alright, as long as you don't access them.

Not true. There's a button called re-author, which lets you remove anything

Thanks guys!
I'll give DVD Decrypter a try.

Lately, I've been borrowing movies from people and wishing that I could keep them longer.
I just realized that I had a DVD Burner and the lightbulb finally came on.

That's what he's talking about. You can remove features but you can't alter the menus to reflect the changes in DVD Shrink.

Wow. When did they add that option? You're saying that if you remove the extras, it'll remove the option in the menu gui? Is that automatic, or do you have to do it manually?

Pretty cool either way.

DVDShrink is definitely the best of the "one-click" copy programs. Their new algorithms for resizing the video data are fantastic! I've done rather long movies like Scarface (3 hrs.), that have to compress down near 60% of their original size, and you can hardly tell the difference between the original DVD! Fantastic program. Go here for help: www.dvdshrink.info

If you need to backup a movie that's originally on a DVD-5, just use DVD Decrypter.

No, no...

Using Reauthor, you can just delete the extras but it won't remove them from the menu. That's what he was talking about when he said you can't get rid of extras from the menu but you can delete them from the disk.

There are programs out there that automatically remove them from menus though, if you delete them from the disk. Some are pretty cheap too, like only ~$35 bucks.

Nah. I'm just backing them up for um, other people.
They'll be so happy with my efforts that they'll let me retain their DVDs a little longer!
THUS EVERYBODY WINS.

^this 'wink' is just that! don't misinterpret it!

*Need Help*

I bought Man On Fire on the way up here. Watched it on the train and loved it. I promised my Mom I'd rip it and put it on her HDD on her laptop, but I get a cyclical redundancy error @ 46% which tells me it's a CSS error/copy protection.

Anyone know a way around this?
