How are still posting. and why in gods' name would you fuck with any hard drive without Backing up your data first?

Rarrr. I was going to split it into system and other. I installed the system on my new partition, that's how I'm posting. I wouldn't think I would need to back-up for a simple partition.

Well, I've come to grips with what has happened. The only major issue is that painting I had been working on for weeks is gone. My music is on my iPod, so I can get that easily enough. I have most of the apps I was using, so I can just install those from disc. It still makes me sad, but it's probably for the best. I learned a valuable lesson tonight, and I'll be up until 2 thinking about what I've done. From here on, I keep a recent back-up image on CD...Just in case.

Partitioning is never a simple thing. You should always be careful.

This is going out especially to those of you always advising people to use Partition Magic on PCs like it's nothing btw :p

For goodness sakes....

did you ignore the warning that said that partitioning the drive would erase its contents?

Anyways, you use the disk utility to partition a drive - but the Apple utility will not partition a drive that contains the boot partition. To do that you would have to use a utility similar to Partition Magic on OS X such is Drive Tools or iPartition

WHO DEY!?
All you need to do is put an OS X install CD in the drive and hold "C" as the machine boots up. This will run the OS X installer. Before clicking anything to commence installation, you can go to the menu at the top and access then Disk utility. It's very user friendly (and will of course destroy all data on the drive).
