To be honest, Oatmeal is not something that I call my "native" food at all - but from time to time, I enjoy a hearty bowl of warm oatmeal.

But the thing is, I see this as an extension of a warm soup, or something more like "rice soup" that you have when you are feeling sick in Asian country - so I like it rather plain/salty. I put a pinch of salt to bring out the natural flavor of the oats.

On the other hand, I see most people have their oatmeal "sweet". With fruits, syrups and stuff - but I can fathom having it. I mean, It's not as gross as I think it would be - but for some reason I can't imagine having warm, sweet oatmeal filled with sweets for breakfast.

I had an experience that some mid-western american family having "minute rice" as their breakfast, puttin the rice in a bowl, w/ milk and sugar. That, really grossed me out. Don't ask me why - but it just does... (and it's something I would never even try, even if I end up having sweat oatmeal!)

Anyhow...

I found this on the web - top 10 ways to jazz up your plain oatmeal...
(and for me, it doesn't sound good at all!)

10 WAYS TO MAKE INSTANT OATMEAL INSTANTLY MORE EXCITING
Add fresh or frozen fruit. Sliced bananas are particularly good. A little fistful of frozen blueberries not only add flavor to instant oatmeal, but your mouth will marvel over the inviting temperature / texture differential when you bite into each little berry.

Add dried fruit such as raisins, dried cranberries, dried cherries, dates or sweetened shredded coconut.

Add chopped nuts like walnuts or almonds. Finely chopped nuts can create a tasty crumbled topping.

Add a tablespoon or two of your favorite granola. Mushy boring oatmeal is yesterday's business. Today you can easily add a delightful crunch to any bowl of oatmeal.

Add a dribble of pure delicious maple syrup.

Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Never be afraid of more flavor.

Add a little dollop of yogurt. Flavored yogurts add taste and all yogurts add a smooth creamy texture.

Crush a little handful of your favorite dry breakfast cereal onto your oatmeal. Cap'n Crunch oatmeal anyone?

Stir in a couple teaspoon of your jam or fruit preserves and turn your oatmeal into a fruity fiesta bowl.

Add a single tablespoon of ice cream to your oatmeal. Your mouth will go crazy with pleasure as the cool ice cream mingles with the warm oats.

Honorable mention goes to these oatmeal additions, most of which should only be enjoyed by really skinny people: whipped cream, chocolate chips, mini-marshmallows, butter and brown sugar, crumbled candy bars (seriously) and eggnog.

I generally put in either a handful of dried cranberries, some crumbled pecans, or a spoonful of jam on top.

Used to do a plop of brown suger, but I can't stomach it any more.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
raisins, a little cinamman powder, and either strawberry jelly or some chopped up stawberries.

I take a slice of wheat bread or hardo bread, break it up into little pieces, and mix up a few of the pieces into my bowl while the oatmeal is still hot. Old habit from when I was younger. :)

I cook the oats with water and/or soy milk. The longer it takes, the better. Then I add salt, cinnamon, and nuts. Don't really like it too sweet so the only sugars I might use are fruits.

lots of butter and lots of sugar. No fruits or anything like that. I'm from the southeast US and as far as i know, that's a common way to eat it here, although some people add cinammon.

I make mine with 1/3rd water 2/3rds milk. It's too heavy otherwise. I also use jumbo oats and put a spoonful of this in it:

I boil 700ml water stovetop and add 1 cup oatmeal. Let it stay overnight and add a banana when I prepare my lunch...Every single day with 6 hardboiled eggs. :/

Seriously, mix a few generous heaps of applesauce into any sort of oatmeal and it becomes awesome. Toss in some raisens for added effect.

Its a great meal that will keep your batteries charged all day long. Applesauce and Oatmeal FTW!

Cream of Wheat is SUPERIOR! :p

I generally lean toward the . . . uh, brown sugar IIRC instant oatmeal.

Haven't had oatmeal in ages.

Been on a Grits kick lately.

It's pretty basic for me...I buy the one minute stuff, pour it in a nice, big bowl, add some milk, microwave it for three minutes (it's 15 years old, whaddya want?), throw a couple teaspoons of brown sugar on it and I'm good to go. I like my oatmeal thick, but not too thick...it's a fine balancing act. Oh yeah, sometimes I'll add some cream cracker pieces, but that's as adventurous as I get. It's great food...only problem is I can generally finish a bowl off in less time then it takes for me to warm it up. :lol
