How do you like your Loading screens?

Mihail said:
That's true, and neither did F-Zero GX, which includes much larger and more complex tracks and many more racers.

All the examples are GC games which benefit from faster loading time due to the hardware. But what about PS2/Xbox games? There the limitations are hardware and medium driven, so the game developers have no real option (again, using racing and sports as an example). I agree they should be efficient as possible, but are probably necessary given the hardware.

Namco has a patent that gives them and only them the right to use mini games during loading screens.

Prior art X a million.

That patent is the crappiest one I have seen in years. I swear these fucks don't even check anymore. Look for someone to patent internal combustion engine soon.

I hate loading screens but I don't mind games that preload in the background while you're playing or watching a cutscene. I liked the spaceshooter load screen for Tekken 5.

I'd say also due to the dev kit. Doesn't it incorporate some special disc drive which emulates the GOD in terms of access speed & transfer speed. eg loadtimes

It's probably my biggest problem with the PSP. Loading on a portable is in no way cool. ;_;
Well then DO something about it! It's not as if you are stuck with lengthy loading on PSP (unless you updated your firmware!)...

I liked Castlevania: Symphony of the Nights controlable warping loading icon and the fact that loading within the game was hidden by traveling across a "loading room," pretty sweet way to make it feel seamless.

Its loading-screen wasn't as good, though.
I thought it was actually quite a bit better. :)

...but hey, they were both great.

Unless you are playing this on Saturn, in which case, there is a "Now Loading" screen even AFTER the "load rooms". :P

Do yourself a favor and rent/buy a copy of Airplane before posting anymore.

On topic: What's a load time? BUY A GAMECUBE!

Non-Existant

I hate load screens with a passion, as they break up the flow of a game to an irritating degree. In my idea world, massive storage solid state media would viable for games.

Failing that though, give me a bar that fills not according to the number of segments loaded or similar crap, but according to the time remaining. As in, time the average load for that segment, and make the bar fill at a uniform rate while that is happening. Nothing worse than a loading bar which stalls for ages at a certain point, as it defeats the purpose to my mind.

As a Nintendo centric gamer I don't normally worry about this. It's when I'm playing my friends consoles that I realize how much loading some games have. I usually pretend to fall asleep when loading to piss them off. But the loading screens that I absolutely abhorre are the ones with the progress bar that seems to stay frozen at the very last seconds and that last bit of loading seems to take twice as long as the rest of the damn bar. It's like "Loading... almost there... almost there, here it i.... OH WAIT, PSYCHE... Loading..." Makes me wanna pull my hair out.

Even as a joke...it just doesn't work anymore. The whole "BUY A -insert console-" thing, I mean...
What are you saying? A Drinky/MAF joke has been run into the ground and no longer funny!? *GASP*

Obviously you don't like it or don't find it funny because the joke is on you!

Yeah, it's been run into the ground.

It's not even logical in this case (I know, as I've did the whole "BUY A GAMECUBE" thing YEARS ago). It's an awesome piece of hardware (the best hardware design this gen IMO) and does tend to load faster in general, but there are plenty of games that still suffer from load times...just as there are games on PS2 and XBOX that have no problems with them.

I'd rather have none at all but it depends on the game.

For most games I'd rather just have a black screen with maybe a spinning disk or some kind of animated loading symbol in the corner to tell me it hasn't crashed :lol At the most I accept having a progress bar but ultimately I don't want the loading screen to break up the atmosphere of a game and that happens far too often at the moment.

If I'm playing a fun arcade style game or a puzzler then I don't mind having colourful, vibrant loading screens. In fact with any arcade style game I wouldn't mind if the loading screen actually had some mini game of some kind. I don't like Tekken 5 but the loading screens were good :D

I suppose this is something we are going to have to get used to next gen so this is a good topic to have right now. I hope developers are reading it!

Yeah I know I'm just being an ass about it. My biggest gripe with SSX 3 (on GC) is the load times for everything. Sure they're quick but every time? :(

I prefer not having any loading screens. It can't be that difficult, Nintendo achieved it in nearly every game they made this generation. But if there really have to be loading screens, I prefer black ones, as long as loading doesn't take longer than 3-5 seconds. If it DOES take longer I lose my interest in playing the game or go nuts because I don't know whether the console hung up. SO there has to be some funny picture or something like that ^^.

My understanding of loading barswas that many are simple animations that have no bearing on amount loaded or time left - they are simply an animation to let the viewer know something is happening, and that it hasn't stalled.

Apprently it keeps people happy to see something, even if it's arbitrary. Example, the login-bar on MacOSx is supposedly just an animation.

Somethings are actually real, though.
