Here is what I have. Thoughts on optimization? What's your library and how it's organized?

I despise digital stuff. I like to own my things (even if some are basically physical licences). I still buy vinyl.

My discs are stored on shelves. I used to have loads of OG Xbox, 360 and PS3 in my collection but was a prat and sold it all. Now just Series X, PS4 and PS5 stuff plus my blu rays and 4K discs, probably close to 270 of those packages across the formats mentioned.

I always upgrade when a superior format is available and give the previous version away. My only remaing DVDs now are Neon Genesis Evangelion and a BD release is due this year so happy for that.

I have multiple offset shelves on one wall in the living room and the games are organized by the platform. Usually I have my unfinished games on one side and my finished games on the other side of the row with the finished games stored upside down.

to answer your question i would use Shallow cabinets so nothing is stored behind them, if you love them but cant see them, what's the point in keeping them. ?

Gaming: With the exception of a handful of discs, which sit in a little disc folder in my entertainment system, I am completely digital.

Music, Movies, and TV: I have gotten rid of all disc cases and have several large book style disc holders that hold every disc I own. These disc holders sit in moisture sealed bins at the bottom of a closet. I keep them because I have copied everything to a Plex media server and keep them for archival purposes, in case I ever need them.

Plex keeps everything organized for me in a number of different ways, the discs are in alphabetical order. I buy new stuff and just throw them in, but once a year I will take it all out and reorganize it while watching a movie.

Most of my blurays are kept in a cabinet. I have some more in a shelf that houses my Switch. Then I have a book shelf type thing for books that I like to revisit (I am a big reader so I also have another bookshelf in my home office and bedroom).

i've cut way back on physical media as i hate how much space it takes up and how damaging it is for the enviroment. i have donated/recycled a shit load but that said i still do have some:

books - about 50 paperbacks on a shelf in my bed room. some in a cupboard.
cds - about 100 music cds in a cd holder box in a cupboard. ain't touched them in about 10 years.
blu ray - about 30 movies/tv shows all in a drawer in my TV cabinet
vinyl - 10 records stored up right in a box
video games - about 20 PS1/PS2 games also stored in the same drawer as my blu rays.

i don't plan on getting rid of my books/blu ray/playstation games and might continue to buy them only if i first read a book on my kindle/stream a movie and i love it enough to want a physical copy (won't buy any more video games). as for music i plan on donating/recycling my cds + vinyl at some point. i'm all streaming for music.

IMO the biggest problem with this setup is that it has a lot of unused space. The space that is used makes the media inaccessible as well since it's stacked so deep. I would look into some Media shelving (or build your own).
You also should not store the cases laterally like that because the weight will leave an impression on the cases at the bottom (seen it many times).
If you want to keep that garage shelving unit than my suggestion would be to buy some stackable tupperware containers. Take the media you consume less often and pack it away with the stuff you use regularly out in the open and easily accessible.
