I did a big gamepad PCB photshoot yesterday (for science) consisting of several types of PSX pads, and some Genesis and Saturn pads. All the pads in the shoot were purchased used from local Gamecrazies and Funcos and whatever a few days before.
Anyway, I was astounded at how filthy some of these pads were.
Onto the pics

Raised or lowered lettering is a nice trap for "hand salsa," and the label of every PSX pad that I took apart had some level of filth gathered around it, but these two were the worst. To be fair, my current PS2 pad has a little cheese on it too, but I think that such deposits can be keep to an absolute minimum if one were to just wash their hands before the play and after they eat.
Did this guy keep his Genny outside? How do you let this much dirt get on your gamepad? It's obvious that the Gamespots and EBs don't clean these pads in any way before they stuff them into plastic re-sale bags, but when contemplating taking their pads to sell at the stores, why didn't the previous owner ever think to take a damp cloth to them?
Oh, this one was by far the worst. Just look at that well blended cocktail of dirt and hand oils covering every inch on that Saturn pad. At first glance, I thought that the white paint labels were wearing off of the buttons. WRONG! That C button is deeply coated with hand cheese!
The inside of this pad was almost worse. There was a wealth of stiff, grey hair inside the gamepad itself. How hair, let alone that much of it, gets inside a sealed gamepad I will never know, but every Dual Shock that I disassemble has some caught around the shock motors. I wish I had some pics of the hair, but somehow I didn't capture it. Rest assured, it was gross.

So how dirty are your gamepads? Do you ever clean them? Take any precautions with storing them or washing your hands? Every Gaffer is more respectful to their hardware then the dipshits who passed aloing the above merchandise to me right? Assure me, please.
Mine have some very, very light cheese deposits on them, but I wash my hands often and wipe my controllers down every once in a while. My dirtiest controller is probably my Nostromo N52; in between the keys it is pretty coated; I really need to clean that out soon.
BTW, I threw out most of the used pad parts after I removed the PCBs, but the ones that I did keep I cleaned. Imagine me in my basement with a bucket at 2:30am, shirtless under a flourescent, scrubbing some shithead's hand cheese out of a Saturn button with a toothbrush. The life of the monk is a glamorous one.
