How filthy are your gamepads. A few disgusting pics inside.

I did a big gamepad PCB photshoot yesterday (for science) consisting of several types of PSX pads, and some Genesis and Saturn pads. All the pads in the shoot were purchased used from local Gamecrazies and Funcos and whatever a few days before.

Anyway, I was astounded at how filthy some of these pads were.

Onto the pics

****************************************************************

Raised or lowered lettering is a nice trap for "hand salsa," and the label of every PSX pad that I took apart had some level of filth gathered around it, but these two were the worst. To be fair, my current PS2 pad has a little cheese on it too, but I think that such deposits can be keep to an absolute minimum if one were to just wash their hands before the play and after they eat.

Did this guy keep his Genny outside? How do you let this much dirt get on your gamepad? It's obvious that the Gamespots and EBs don't clean these pads in any way before they stuff them into plastic re-sale bags, but when contemplating taking their pads to sell at the stores, why didn't the previous owner ever think to take a damp cloth to them?
ASM-FilthyDirty-03.jpg

Oh, this one was by far the worst. Just look at that well blended cocktail of dirt and hand oils covering every inch on that Saturn pad. At first glance, I thought that the white paint labels were wearing off of the buttons. WRONG! That C button is deeply coated with hand cheese!

The inside of this pad was almost worse. There was a wealth of stiff, grey hair inside the gamepad itself. How hair, let alone that much of it, gets inside a sealed gamepad I will never know, but every Dual Shock that I disassemble has some caught around the shock motors. I wish I had some pics of the hair, but somehow I didn't capture it. Rest assured, it was gross.

So how dirty are your gamepads? Do you ever clean them? Take any precautions with storing them or washing your hands? Every Gaffer is more respectful to their hardware then the dipshits who passed aloing the above merchandise to me right? Assure me, please.

Mine have some very, very light cheese deposits on them, but I wash my hands often and wipe my controllers down every once in a while. My dirtiest controller is probably my Nostromo N52; in between the keys it is pretty coated; I really need to clean that out soon.

BTW, I threw out most of the used pad parts after I removed the PCBs, but the ones that I did keep I cleaned. Imagine me in my basement with a bucket at 2:30am, shirtless under a flourescent, scrubbing some shithead's hand cheese out of a Saturn button with a toothbrush. The life of the monk is a glamorous one.

I don't clean my pads, unless they're an expensive controller of some kind.

But Jesus. I can't even imagine how that stuff could get so dirty.

Mine all look new. N64 pads worn alittle but PS1 looks new. I clean them now and again and hate it when people dont have fully clean or dry hands when playing.

All of mine look brand new. If they start to get a hint of dirtyness, I make sure to clean them up with water, Q-Tips, and a rag.

I wipe them off with a damp cloth every so often. If the surface isn't smooth and non-sticky, it needs a cleaning.

Used controllers (and cartridges, and consoles) get a rubbing alcohol scrubbing before I'll use 'em.

:lol @ "hand salsa"

I'm so anal about my hardware that it borders on the psychotic. If I have any deposits (the Wavebird after my RE4 marathon for example) I'm in there with a Q-tip and rubbing alchohol ASAP. I dust my gaming set-up area every single night, actually disconnecting stuff to get to hard to reach places. My TV probably feels molested as much as I make sure that screen is particle-free and shiny. The only pad I've ever "let go" was for my original SNES, and that was only because endless rounds of Street Fighter finally killed it altogether.

Holy shit. My NES pads aren't even near that. I even wash my hands before playing with any controller.

Same here. I always wash my hands, even if I've had just a little something to eat.

I bought a used N64 last year, that thing was vile. There's no telling what substances go into the blend that forms the crust on some people's controllers.

EDIT: Thought of something I wanted to ask. What is the white powder that comes up around the analog sticks on the PS2 controller after a decent amount of use? It's mainly on the left stick on my controller, I figure it's in there to ensure proper movement of the stick, but it's weird to see it there.

wtf, this thread needs a warning. those pics are just disgusting

and hell no, my gamepads aren't dirty. i dont even need to clean them. that's how good i treat my gamepads

I constantly clean my controllers. I can't stand it when I touch a controller and it feels even slightly greasy. Usually I just need a wet rag, cause I'm a germophobe and wash my hands way more than I need to anyway. Naturally, I can't stand using a controller at a friends house cause they never take the time to clean their own damn controllers.

On a related note, I hate when people use the restroom and don't wash their hands. After anyone has used my controllers I sanitize the shit out of them when they leave. My nephew would come over and eat a whole fucking bag of hot cheetos and get straight to the Halo 2 without washing if I didn't give him grief about it first.:lol

Ground-up plastic dust.

The only controller that ever needs maintanance for me is my MAS stick, but that is usually a given. I always have clean hands, so this isn't a problem for me. :(

That, and I don't let other people touch my things.

Do you wear gloves or take handwipes where ever you go?

I'm not sure what's more disturbing - those disease ridden controllers or people who constantly clean their controllers with wet rags and q-tips. Opposite sides of the same fucked up coin. ;)

I used to work in a mom & pop video game store in the 90's when everything was still cartridge based, and the dirt and dust ain't so bad, it's the dog and/or cat piss which seemed to be on 25% of all the trade-in carts and consoles. Fuckin' rancid.

Those just look like they been out in the garage or something weathering the elements. Now I could show you some truly f4cked up game pads I once saw over a fraternity house. The whole house was disgusting in general but I cried when I saw those game systems. The frat will remain anonymous............for now.

If you think that's dirty, you should see Drinky's DS. Thousands of hours of play interrupted only by Cheetos and Pepsi breaks make for one sloppy d-pad and touch screen.

Haha, no but I always have a fresh container of wet-wipes in my glovebox. Also, I have my wife carry a little bottle of that hand sanitizer stuff in her purse. :)

Geez, those are terrible. I have NES controllers that are still in pristine condition. I wash my hands before I use my controllers and clean then periodically.

I found some of my old SNES controllers the other day and I really didn't want to touch them. So fuckin gross looking. My dad used to smoke back when I lived at home and played the SNES and the entire thing is yellow.

My current gen controllers don't look bad and I'm not really anal about them. Tons of drunk fools play on them so they are relatively worn.

I wanted to see how filthy my PS1 gamepad (which is from 1998) was. Surprisingly it's cleaner than my PS2, GCN and Xbox pads (Which are clean as well). Wow, I used to take good care of hardware when I was little :lol

How can you even get a controller this filthy? You have to try to do that! Maybe some people want to give EB and gamestop hardware in bad condition to screw people over :lol

Now that we're on the subject. Has anyone ever loaned PS, Xbox, Dreamcast ect. game to someone with NO damn scratches on the reading surface What-so-EVER and you get it back and it looks like they were using them to skate on the sidewalk? I mean WTF are they doing with the games when they're not in the case? How hard is it to put the damn game in the case when its NOT in the game machine? God some adults don't need to have anything worth more than 20 bucks they act like little kids with their $hit.

That's not it. The plastic used in the SNES is prone to yellowing. Not sure what causes it, but that's the reason. My SNES looks like it was rescued from the parlor of a cigar store.

I don't take any special precautions like washing my hands before every play session, but my pads are in perfect condition. I have no idea what these guys do with their pads. I bought a Dreamcast controller off ebay once that was really dirty, and I had to clean it, but it wasn't as bad as these ones.

My Apple keyboard however is pretty bad, but that's only because it's made of seethrough plastic, so you can see the little bits of toast crumbs which have fallen through the keys.

My friend used to keep his playstation game out of the cases, stacked with other cd's on the carpet of his living room. He also repeatedly lost videogames.

My SNES looks like it has since I first bought it. I have a feeling you have to keep it out of direct sunlight. Either that or I'm just randomly lucky.

mine usually just get a little bit of black gunk in the grooves along the sides that i clean every once in a while with a thin little flathead screwdriver, but never as filthy as the top pics. WTF do you play your genesis at a construction site?

I take mine apart at least once a month to detail them.
Those pics are nasty and all, but I think you're overdoing it a tad. Unless you play games while eating hot wings every night or something.

What is 'hand cheese'. Is it the same as 'man fat'...

I try, but I have a 14 year old brother, who is disgusting, and he has 14 year old friends, who are even more disgusting, so it's an uphill battle of epic proportions. I think I'm going to buy new PS2 pads and not let the little fuckers touch them.

Thats from your palms sweating while playing extended hours and gripping too tight. Try to turn the air on or better yet an air-conditioner and loosen the grip a little. Its perfectly normal though I know people who have Never cleaned the gunk in-between their grooves and I won't even touch their controllers. I think I have some sort of condition.

EDIT: The more I look at those pictures the more I'm convinced that no one had used those controllers for quite some time and they were stored somewhere with dust and high humidity especially the PSX controller.

Wish I had a digicam… Those pics have nothing on my controllers.
The only clean one is the Xbox controller :p
I daren't look at my controllers, to be frank. They're not filthy, but a zoom lens shows a lot :)

Nubbe - what's your avatar from? it's awesome!

I never wash mine, and they never seem to get dirty. Its a win-win situation :)

Run a toothpick in-between the grooves of all your controllers then come back and report what you found. These people saying they never have to clean their controllers I truly worry about even if you do wash your hands.

It's only a controller, I'm not gonna obsess over keeping them spotless or washing my hands before every use. If they build up a layer of funk I'll wash them off with a cloth or take them apart and soak them in soapy water for a few hours, rinse them off and they are clean as a wistle.

Sweet jebus, do you play your games inside of a carpentry shop or are you just the worst slob ever? I think I contracted an STD just from looking at those pictures.

A tiny bit of dead skin, and I ran it all along the side-groove (of my Xbox controller). So tiny and insignificant that I couldn't see it (or even a hint of it) before I did that. So tiny I'm sure as hell not going to worry about it.
