How good is painkiller?

It's okay. Not terrible, but the gameplay style gets kind of tiresome. There are lots of levels though, and the boss fights are awesome.

The main problem is that it just gets old by mid game. It's not a bad game, though.

How much are you purchasing it for? It's $10 good but I dunno about $20.

Have you tried out the demo (since you're getting a new PC I'm assuming your current one isn't up to par for it)? If not then just imagine Serious Sam with a gothic atmosphere, physics, and better graphics.

There's a good repository for all Painkiller related files. I suggest the 2nd demo since it's an excellent representation of the gameplay within the game.

If you thought Serious Sam was tons of fun (and I did) then Painkiller will be right up your alley. It's highly energetic and there's always a nonstop barrage of enemies coming for you. It's like Doom in that regard, continue a bit then a new onslaught of enemies come rushing foward while you're trying to figure out how to get to the next area.

EDIT: Always a pleasure to help. :)

Doom really isn't like that, though. I have replayed Doom 2 recently, and the game shares very little with SS or Painkiller. In fact, I can only think of a few situations that resemble those games...

I know but it's the closest example I can find to Doom. I mean generally whenever you go into a new area there are always a couple of enemies (10 and under) ready to greet you. It's like that in some regard except taken up a few notches.

I love Painkiller; it's probably my favorite PC game of this year (and yes, I've played Doom 3). I didn't even particularly like Serious Sam (or than run-n-gun genre) but I love to sit down every week or so for a level or two of ass-kicking, physics-bending mayhem with Painkiller. I honestly think the physics are a huge part of why I enjoy it so much. Whereas endlessly shooting at enemies gets boring in other games, pinning them to the wall with a wooden stake or blasting them back 50 feet with the shotgun is always entertaining and different.

I completly agree with Mason, I think Painkiller is a great game, and I didnt really like serius sam. Its fun becuase there are just so many enemies coming at you at once and killing them is the fun part! The physics are awesome they bounce all over the screen, and there are great weapons to fuck them up!
The stake gun is awesome and you know it.

I agree with everything Mason just said...

And will add this...after playing this, I wasn't as impressed with Doom 3 as I could have been because the physics are missing in a lot of ways and I had become used to that. Both games have great graphics though :)

I have been playing Painkiller the last couple of weeks, in fact I have had it a long time but never really got into it all that much. But then I discoved the wooden stake weapon and started to have so much fun that I got hooked. The physics and the endless onslaughts of monsters are good enough for me but the huge bosses are icing on the cake.

In fact I made a video to show to some friends at work showing off different aspects of the game...feel free to take a peek. I used FRAPS to film it and it slowed the game down a bit so imagine everything is moving 25% faster in reality and you'll get the idea. Plus you really only see a few level examples....there are a lot more

Quality is not perfect but it is good enough to get an idea.

Mr. Pockets... you poor bastard. Is that slowdown I see?

I found Painkiller to be the perfect all-action FPS for someone like me who has 20 minutes to burn here and there. The story is cliched and cheesy (come on, if they wanted an excuse to have a naked lady walking around in all the cutscenes they could have come up with something a little better than that), but at the same time interesting. I really dug the boss battles and the Sanitarium level, and the level structure was perfect.

Read it again ;P

FRAPS = Slowdown when I record with everything maxed in both apps.

Without FRAPS on I see no slowdown at all...another reason this game rocks, max settings and TONS of enemies and no slowdown :)

Even on my slow system I can get 60-70fps averages, about twice that on the faster system.

Like you just said though, great for short sessions....try it on the harder levels of difficulty though :)...scary!
