Is this game like Doom?
The classic Painkiller series is back! Battle through Purgatory in fast-paced cooperative action, wielding infernal weapons against relentless demonic hordes. Condemned for your sins, the Voice of the Creator offers you a chance at redemption. Will you seize it or be lost to darkness?

Painkiller is a reimagining of the classic franchise, featuring cooperative play for up to three players and full offline support. Battle hordes of demons and titanic terrors across richly detailed gothic environments.

Trapped in Purgatory, you are sentenced for your transgressions against Heaven. But the Voice of the Creator gives you a chance to redeem yourself. As one of the Champions, you are to stop the fallen angel Azazel who is about to unleash his demonic armies onto Earth. You will face hordes of enemies, demons with unique powers and three monstrous children of Azazel – the Nephilim.

Will you succeed in your mission and earn your salvation?

I'm worried about the focus on co-op gameplay. Aside from that yeah, Painkiller is an arena shooter more or less like Serious Sam or the modern DOOM games.

Coolest game in the series is probably the first one. Really liked it back then and imo it has one of the coolest depictions of Hell in any videogame.

Yeah... I guess it is nice, tho i recognize I didnt get a chance to play it back in the day (My Pentium 4 with integrated graphics wasnt particularly fan of games).

But all these "Pre-order", "skin pack" is just... meh, Im just tired of this, and all of this for a Digital lic-

Physical Version.😍👍🏼

Ok... now this have my attention. Im not particularly with too much cash atm, but might see a way to get this one home and try it.

All I remember this for is that it was one of first FPS where I fully noticed the lack of the type of level design that made me love Doom and Quake and all. I remember dropping it quickly because of the shitty level design. Not sure if that's actually TRUE in hindsight.

original was a fun b-tier game with its own sloppy character... and it was a bit gory with some decent physics.

this just looks like doom lite + increased enemy count with the painkiller name slapped on for marketing purposes

If you can turn off battle music BUT still keep ambient music then it will be glorious..

if its like that last abhorrent abomination, then they can suck my ballbag.

I haven't played the original game, but I remember seeing screenshots and videos of it, and I don't recall such colourful art direction. Did the original game really look like this, or was that remake simply made for a 'modern audience'?

I literally can't fathom how someone wouldn't like Dark Ages if they liked 2016 and Eternal.
Same, but to each their own. I was convinced I wouldn't like it after the watching the previews, but once I played it myself I thought it was a really fun video game that iterates on a solid foundation but feels really fresh at the same time. My game of the year so far. Although I've always had an affinity for the franchise since the original, so it could just be the bias talking.

I loved Painkiller back on release, I remember playing the demo and saving up to buy it. Looking forward to revisiting it later this year. I must revisit Serious Sam too at some point, another absolute classic arena shooter that released only a few years before.

It's not true.
It's an arena style shooter modeled after Serious Sam and inspired by games like Robotron 2084 and Smash TV.

Painkiller as 4 player coop... the world is fucking ending... painkiller, dearest of all my friends. what have they done to you

Character designs are not Concord level, but pretty silly.
Taking bets if a dev will be mouthing off randos on Twitter and calling them 'ists & 'phobes.

Also while the original was overwritten as hell. At its core it had a basic but effective story about a man fighting the forces of hell in order to reunite with his wife.

This meanwhile? Story seems to be another nothing one.

I was excited for this, until I saw the choosable characters. No leatherjacket-wearing Daniel Garner, are they serious?

Major "Son I am disappoint" moment.

People are arguing about story in an arena meat shooter?

That being said, the only thing that should be good in a reboot is shooting and action pacing. Closed beta impressions were mixed IIRC. It is also made not by Saber themselves but by an asset house Anshar Studios and that is a good thing to know to temper any expectations.

OG painkiller was level based Point A to point B affair. This reboot sems to have practically none of the DNA of the original.
And yes, even in a FPS having a MC who you wanted to see succeed is important. Were not in the 90s anymore.

Huh? It seems to have improve upon the original formula in every way? Obviously it remains to be seen if the final product delivers but imo they've taken the Painkiller franchise and elevated it beyond what it originally was.

I love me some Boomer Shooters(TM) but another uprezzed version of the first game would have been such a bore. The movement, gunplay and visuals all seem very solid and very Painkillery. The fact that it has co-op is the proverbial cherry on top and makes it stand out from the crowd (especially after the lacklustre DOOM TDA that was a one-and-done affair with no replayability really).
