How good is your vision?

I just got a new pair of glasses. My optometrist said my vision was 20/400. I forgot to ask him if that's good or bad. How good is vision(unaided if you wear glasses)?

20/10? That's pretty good. I wonder if it's possible for someone to get better than that. You'd be like a hawk; able to spot a mouse in a field from 1,000 feet in the air. :D

Yeah, 20/400's not very good...your vision is likely equivalent to that of a bat. :P

If you didn't know, 20/20 is considered average. I'm about 20/15, last time I was checked. :)

Google search says you're legally blind...

How is that possible? I thought to be blind you have to not be able to see ANYTHING. Granted everything is blurred beyond belief without my glasses, I can still see. =P

Just be happy you're legally blind. I'm pretty sure that means they can't draft you.

I don't actually know.

My eyesight has been in a bit of decline - I know that for sure. I know I have to actually try in order to read some things now. Particularly when it's dark. I actually have to think about reading... I've never had that before.

My optometrist said I have astigmatism if I remember correctly. One eye is weaker than the other for whatever reason, meaning I find it hard to find a happy focus without straining, and I find it hard to seperate lines. I have glasses now that I wear whenever I'm punching data at a PC, or paying attention to something which requires reading... legally I have to wear them if I drive. But all this said, I don't really have bad vision. I've tried other ppl's glasses on and it's like putting the bottoms of two milk bottles in front of my face. My glasses only compensate for one eye.

Someone even said to me my prescription might be corrective. Meaning I mightn't need these things forever. I'll have to ask my optometrist at my next check up.

If worse comes to worse, I can always get a bad ass eye patch like Big Boss! Awesome!

edit: my condition is called astigmatism not 'stigma'. I've edited the post to reflect that.

My vision is terrible, I mean I can still wear thin lens glasses and soft contacts but the Dr said my vision may get wrose once im older since it may be in my "genes" He also said I can't get laser eye surgery which is what I was looking forward to doing once I was 25 or so. I hope hes wrong.

I'm not actually sure technically, but I am partially blind in my right eye. It's lazy, with a large blindspot (best way to describe it I guess). The left one works wonderfully though.

I don't know. It's getting worse though. I need to go back to the optometrist to get a new script but I don't want to pay the cash (no insurance for it). Plus my glasses are all scratched to hell, but they're holding on.

I assume it's 20/10 or something. Been fine all my life.

I would've thought I had 20/20, but I didn't even know there was 20/10. I should check one of these days.

My one eye is horrible for distance but good up close, my other is sort of ok for both distance and close. I find it very distracting/annoying to have one eye so much worse then the other. I haven't got glasses yet but I need to.

A lot of people worry about wearing glasses for the looks, I'm just happy to live in a time when I can wear something that lets me see good again. Although they will probably be hard to get used to for the first few months.

I'm around 20/100.

100 more to go and...

If a person is legally blind, they can qualify for tax breaks and certain federal and state social services, such as help in purchasing magnifiers and other low vision aids.

...CHA CHING!

20/14

When I was little it was MUCH better actually, but at the age of 12 I had my retina scratched on one of my eyes..

i don't know my exact numbers, but my optometrist once told me that if i tried to cross the street without my glasses it would be a death wish.

i'm about to go to the optometrist this week (or next, depending on how the PSP fund goes). i was 20/200 last time i went three years ago. i lost my glasses, and have been living without them. i can usually see well enough to drive around in town, but it was raining tonight and there was a detour for thru traffic. If i didn't have to turn, i would've likely plowed through the detour, and into the cop car behind it.

So, yeah, looks like i'll be going to the optometrist tomorrow.

I don't know this 20/something business because I'm measured in Japan. But it's gotten progressively worse over the past three years and is now 0.8 and 0.7. I guess that might equate to 20/25 and 20/29, but not sure.

My eyesight is fine close up, but horrible in consideration to distance; I can't even distinguish the facial features of a person standing 5-10 feet away from me! Whenever I wear glasses instead of my contacts, I like to take them off, put them back on and then take them off again just to marvel at the contrast. Thank you Salvino d'Armato! :lol

How do you figure out the 20/# thing?

My contacts say BC 8.6, DIA 13.8, PWR -7.0

20/55 in both, the bad news is that my optometrist said that my vision will
rapidly degenerate for the next 3 years. Yay thicker glasses....

I'm pretty sure that means that you have to be at 20 feet to view something that a person with good eyesight could see at 400 feet. Yikes. My eyesight is bad, but I was able to pass the DMV eye test, though they're pretty lenient.

Shitty. 20/500 or -5 depending on how you like to say it -- that equates to something like 8 inches in front of my face clearly or something like that. teh_pwn wins though if his is -7.. that's almost unheard of. I've only met like 1 other person in real life with vision as bad as mine.

I don't even get 20/20 WITH my glasses. I get 20/25 best case. Something about because i'm farsighted plus I have a high astigmatism. Don't know what my vision is without glasses but I assume it's shit.

HOLY SCHNIKES THAT IS BLIND! I thought I was blind with a -4.25 power, but -7.0 is huge. Luckily my vision stopped deteriorating. Damn reading destroys your vision.

Meier -5 isn't that uncommon. Most people fall into the -3 to -5 area once they are done degenerating which usually means their heads aren't growing anymore. All I know is I am going to prevent my child from reading too much. I am pretty sure that had a part in my vision as it isn't familial because I am pretty much the only one who has ever been nearsighted.

Yea, I know my vision is bad. But with my contacts I can see just fine.

It's not like I can't see without them, just VERY blurry. I can make out objects, but not any details. It's half as bad as trying to see through those blur out doors that some showers have.

My vision stopped getting worse a few years ago. What I am worried about are floaters. We near sighted people get more of them, and contacts don't get rid of them.

I think I'll get surgery in about 10 years or so. Will that get rid of the floaters?

Yeah I read a TON as a kid and I have a feeling it could have been part of the reason mine got as bad as it did since no one else in my family has vision this bad.
