How good of a shooter is Zero Wing?

Just want to get peoples opinions on this. Would this game be forgotten by now if it hadn't been for the intro?

I think it's a pretty decent shooter. It's really easy, but not boring. But I think the intro is the only reason people remember it.

It's pretty decent, get the genesis one for the funny translation, but get the pc engine cd for the top notch soundtrack and cut scenes.

I have never played the 'all your base' version, but the arcade one is pretty average. Unlike many other Toaplan shooters, this particular just feels uninspired. The soundtrack is pretty bad, too - irritating, repetitive techno.

The power-up system doesn't quite work, and tractor beam feels more like a gimmick than a substance. The game isn't really horrible. but there are much better Toaplan games out there - and from the same time period; i'd suggest you to try Tatsujin and Hellfire.

I agree, but still think it's pretty decent. It's one of those games that is actually crap but still amusing, at least for a level or two.

Didn't know this was an arcade game.

I like the way you can change the direction of your shots in Hellfire.

Agreed - most of the shooters, even the crappy ones, are fun for a level or two - Hellfire's main problems are its power-up system and difficulty; they are horribly unbalanced and unsatisfying.

I'm glad you played Hellfire - AI and design are really something else.
