How hard is it to find Sports Fans to hang with?

I am watching the Rockets/Mavs game enjoying every second of it. I am watching at home on my HDTV and surround sound. Now, next door my neighbors are having a viewing party kind of thing with some friends. They invited me over, but these people have no fucking idea what is going on. They don't know that 6 fouls will foul a player out, they don't know what an 'over and back' is or a illlegal defense violation. So during playoff time I would rather watch the games alone that listen to them gossip, try out a new drinik, talk about the weather, etc. while the game is on.

My question to the sports fans here, regardless if you are a fan of basketball, football, soccer, or table tennis; are true sports fans THAT rare? Maybe I am just living in a non-sports fans zone.

goddamit, Griese!
most of my better friends are as die hard sports fanatics as i am. for me, the people i'm watching games with have to know wtf is going on.

makes everything much better. also, it's great always having something to do, pretty much anytime. on a wednesday night "hey, what are you doing? wanna come over and watch the (insert sport) game?"

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Hmm, living in Boston, I don't really have this problem. Sports are huge here, so it's easy to find people who just love sports and the science behind them. Hell, I work at a library and have several co-workers who I can talk to about the good stuff.

Though, we do have a good amount of fairweather fans who'll probably forget about the Patriots, for example, when they return to mediocrity. Not the Red Sox though. You have to live here to comprehend the obsession.

I was just debating the skills of Rafael Betancourt (RP- CLE) w/ my friends. That said, I rarely have time to watch games unfortunately, but MLB.tv is my friend when I do. Some of my friends have a ridiculous knowledge of tons of sports (including European soccer leagues) which impresses me a great deal but I'm more a baseball (to a ridiculous extent)/basketball sometimes football guy myself, with a decent understanding of hockey and soccer/football as well as any other somewhat mainstream sport.

Sorry D. I'm the only one in Houston. I'll see you at Live for game 1 of the Phoenix series.

LOL, Khalil called me after the game!

But my brother went over to the 'viewing party' next door, he said most of the people missed most of the 4th quarter because they were talking and asking questions like, "So does this mean we won the playoffs?" Needless to say, I will not be there for any games in the playoffs. I probably will hit a sports bar Thursday.

ha, i constantly think about this.

ironically, i live in pittsburgh which is often described as a drinking town with a football problem. thing is, i'm at carnegie mellon university right now where literally the kids here would prefer the super bowl if it were played by teams of robot dogs.

i have one good friend from home (about 20 mins away) who knows his shit, but that's about it. ideally i'd like to become a sports journalist someday, but i can't help but think that my knowledge is suffering without anyone to talk to at this goddamn school.

at least there's some foreigners here who share my passion for futball... i have to say, the highlight of my trip to France last summer was being in a bar watching the Euro Cup and actually feeling that atmosphere...awesome. can't wait to go back.

p.s. i need an HDTV for the nfl this fall. :(

Yes, get the HDTV. Sports in HDTV is viewing on another level. Really incredible stuff. Playoff Football is the best because of all the different cameras.

About the Sports Bar thing...if I am having a hard time finding friends to watch sports consistently with, who am I going to invite to the bar? Miguel and another guy is about it. Going to a bar to watch a game is ok, but there are alot of idiots who are just posers anyway who know nothing about sports at all. They just know how to cheer a dunk, and boo if the other team gets a basket.

Actually, watching the game at home, with my HDTV, beer, and hot wings was pretty good. Got to see every play, enjoyed the game, got to jump up and down like an idiot screaming, "BOOM!!!!!" as many times as I wanted.

Word. I mean it's not like i need to break down every little coaching decision or subsitution with friends, but it'd be nice to sit down and watch a game w/ someone who i know actually knows whats going on, and isn't shouting at the T.V. over a missed jumpshot, being a poser.

I watch 50% of the Steelers' games with my 75 year old grandfather, and the games are too important to say much, but when something is said it's relevant.

i watched the super bowl here w/ a bunch of kids from philly who didn't even watch their team in the NFC Divisional game. that was fun.

"our running back is too small...who's our backup?"

I think you live in a non-sports zone.

I can always find at least 3 or 4 guys from work/school/whatever to watch a playoff game with me.

I have to say, having people there makes it 100x more enjoyable too.

I hear ya. I went to a Super Bowl party and half the people there were surprised that TO was on the Eagles. I just wonder where all the sports nuts went.

To be fair, it was a Super Bowl party. If you're expecting much conversation beyond the level of "Why did the other team get the ball?", you're in for a disappointment.

I'm so superstitious that unless it's live right in front of me and not on TV, I have a hard time watching games that have significant meaning to me as a fan with friends... yes, I know it's sad.

That said, I know a lot of people who are worth watching sports with. The friendships were developed through school and into university and sort of all built from the same network. As a plus, most have little to no interest in baseball.

The sport of choice is football. We used to watch a fair bit of hockey, but that tapered off in large amounts over the last several years as the game got watered down and clogged up. I think it might have enjoyed a bit of a resurgence last year because I know a lot of people who hopped on the Flames' bandwagon...

I think it's more of an anti-social thing. Got invited to a party next door but you'd rather watch the game ALONE? C'mon man.

I dunno...sometimes those kinds of people can be really annoying. I used to hate watching the games in the breakroom because a bunch of posers and chix who liked the team because of their uniform colors would sit there and talk over the game with useless banter and stupid questions. And all shouting for every shot missed/made. It was annoying as hell.
