How hard is it to fix a first-gen PS2?

I own a SCPH-10001 PS2, and the laser is kind of going bad. Amazing that it still works, but I kept good care of it, plus I don't use it a lot.

The issue with the laser probably stems from the fact that I played a lot of DVD+/-R movies burned using crappy lite-on firmware, but anyway, I just wanted to know how hard it is to fix the laser.

I think mine is just in need of recalibration, because it seems to READ data just fine; it just takes FOREVER to actually access the disc and I don't want the problem to get worse. For example, if I turn it on and there's already a disc in there, my PS2 would detect it instantly, like it is supposed to. More and more frequently, it instead goes to the browser/system settings screen and stays there for like 10-15 seconds. Then it finally detects the disc, and it is gradually getting worse (the number of times this occurs). Using the "diagnostics" option does absolutely nothing. Occasionally, although it is still rare, in between screens when a game is loading something, the DVD drive will shuffle back and forth one too many times, but it does nothing to disrupt gameplay (only loading times in between scenes). This tells me when it needs to skip ahead to a certain part of the disc, it takes time, but when it's actually reading data, there are no problems yet. But this problem rarely if ever happens, however I would expect it to get worse if I don't do something about it.

I want to open it up and fix it, but I don't know how, and I'm afraid I will mess up my PS2. I've built PC's, so it's not like I've never torn apart a machine before, but I'm totally clueless when it comes to PS2 repair; if anyone could give me some detailed advice I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

That looks kind of complicated, though...

Do I HAVE to mess with the pots? Perhaps the solution is just turning the cog counter-clockwise a couple times?

Crap.

It'll probably die on me months from now when I start playing FFXII or something :D

Yeah sometimes the cog adjustment is all that it needs but that's only if your laser goes to the browser screen for a moment then boots a game. Yours seems to be dying which is to be expected.

I have 2 launch PS2's both had "bad lasers" and gave me DRE's starting about 5 months back when I wanted to play GOW but I recalibrated the laser and no issues on either console, but to prolong the live of my console I now use HDLOADER / Advance to load my games, faster load times, little to no ware on the laser, etc.

Diablos, I was a complete novice to the insides of the PS2 and even I recalibrated my lasers and look there <---- I'm Fucking Retarded!. It's not hard at all just be very careful when taking it apart, the IDE cable from the top half to the motherboard is a bit short and it's a pain in the ass to put it back in if slips out.

Whoa whoa, mine does at the browser screen when inserting a new disc exactly what it does if you turn it on with one already in it: it just takes a few seconds to detect the disc and startup, and it is gradually getting worse. RARELY if ever does this occur in between areas, scenes, etc. in the middle of a game. I've been playing DQ8 and have yet to encounter a problem. I never encounter DRE's.

EGM92: Thanks for the info. How much is the hard drive adaptor for PS2? And HDLoader?

I've done it, easy. Watch out for the power ribbon that connects to the power/sleep buttons.

yeah uh... I took it apart, touched NOTHING, unscrewed the top of the DVD drive and now it won't turn on... the I/O switch does NOTHING.

WTF happened??

The adjustment helped me. I had bad load times with some games. For example, in Star Ocean 3 it was taking at least 30 seconds to begin battles. I was able to fix this and everything loaded at normal speed.

It's easy to do, don't worry too much.

Is the ribbon that f_elz mentioned still in place?

Yeah that got kind of yanked when I took off the top, but it doesn't appear that anything is loose

try getting some pliers and connect the ribbon back, should be easy, but it is a small space so :\

Connect the ribbon back to *what*? It goes from where the power/eject buttons are to the back of the console, I don't know where it goes, even if I remove the bottom and look there

:|

um, should be where the dvd drive is, the bottom of it to the right side somewhere. I will try to find a pic.

Yeah, it goes into a little black thing that slides into two plastic or metal poles. Sliding it back in doesn't do anything

man, if you took out the ribbon your fucked,... I found no way to place it back into the system when my first Ps2 broke.

Oh wait...
I think it works now.

HAHAHAHAHA

Don't laugh at me

It came unplugged from the surge protector and I didn't know :lol :lol :lol

doesn't it have like a little connector at the end of the ribbon? Or is it just my ver. 4? ps2.

Thats better than a broken ps2 :D. Hope it works now.

Thanks for the help guys.

All I had to do was clean the lens off with some 91% Isopropyl Alcohol (using a q-tip) and I turned the cog counter-clockwise twice. Works like new. :)

This is *exactly* what my PS2 is doing. I've taken it apart once with no luck, I guess I'll try again with the links in this thread :/.

Nice to know you got it working. I gave my old PS2 to my sister for Christmas and I bought her the Sims and it had trouble loading. I adjusted the cog a little and set it vertical and the thing works like new.

In my case, turning the cog helped some but didn't fix the problem completely. However, once I adjusted the cog and stood the unit vertically, it worked like new. It's something to try.

You might not even have to stand the unit vertically if you turn the cog a couple notches more.
