How horribly did Lumines bomb?

How much did it sell till now? I remember first day sales were below 10,000 and it was never seen in any sales charts since then. Boggles the mind really.

Did a little over 7,000 initially - which was nearly half its print run, so not that bad, considering.

edit: by "a little" I mean somewhere between 7,400 and 7,800, IIRC and I probably don't.

Did anyone expect it to succeed in sales?

I certainly don't think Mizuguchi did. The point of QB is to sustain high-concept, low-development overhead and low-price games - I still think Lumines did alright for a puzzle game with no franchise backing on a new system.

Didn't Space Channel 5 do poorly as well?
-Space Channel 5
-Space Channel 5 Version 2
-Rez
-Space Channel 5 Special Edition
-Astro Boy
-Feel the Magic Xy-XX
-Lumines

...any thing Miz or former UGA staff touch seems to be allergic to sales. Next up is Meteos.

Ah yea, that is right, UGA got merged into Sonic Team. Though, to be fair, Astro Boy is the only game on that list that sucks.

Seriously, I think you must be the first person I have met that actually likes Astro Boy, especally since Astro Boy: Omega Factor is about a zillon times better then its PS2 cousin.

Oh I dunno. I thought Space Channel 5 sucked pretty hard too.

If they only sell 19,000 of 20,000 copies (very optimistic, too), will that even cover the costs it took to develop and distribute the title, let alone pay the people who made it?

How much did it cost in Japan at retail?

I got omega factor and the ps2 version mixed up. :p (omega is the better one of course)

It's comming out in North America as well, so it's not entirely over.

Sadly, those numbers look like a tremendous success compared to Gitaroo Man. :(

As for cost recovery, it's definitely hard to say. I bet most japanese developers would hope for 100k+ on an original property, but the inexpensive nature of distribution to retail is such that unless they really over-manufactured, the hit might not be so bad.

Can someone post a pic of it. I keep hearing the name, but I've no idea what type of game it is.
I do hope you're kidding.

I reckon Meteos has a good chance of doing better than Lumines. Of course anyone expecting a puzzle game that doesn't have a franchise name attached to it to sell in the hundreds of thousands is crazy.

Zuh? Bandai or SCEA publishing? Anyway even if Lumines doesn't make it here, importing it shouldn't be a problem since the text and menus are practically 99% english.

Well... UGA / Mizuguchi were always semi-obscure game dev - non of their games scream BUY ME to the mainstream. That said... its sad that Lumines bombed - I hoped the larger DS userbase will ensure that METEOS does better; ugly art not with standing.
