How is Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy?

Remember seeing this cheap at Gamecrazy, would probably be buying the GCN version. Reviews range from lukewarm to very positive, all of them lauding the graphics. A Zelda-style game with an actual jump button? I really think I could like this a lot. Any impressions?

It's a hybrid between a platformer and a Zelda-style adventure. It's pretty fun, if a bit glitchy and repetitive. I never finished it, but I got it for $5 so I'm not complaining. If you can find it cheap, go for it.

It's definitely worth a shot. While the sword stuff with Sphinx is iffy (imo) the cursed mummy puzzles really bring this game out.

The game mechanics are very solid and fun at times. I bought the Cube version and enjoyed it until I reached the game-killing glitch. Yes, I must warn you as many have found out on their own- the game includes a horrible glitch which will destroy all your progress (it occurs about 3/4 of the way in). A door you normally go through is sealed shut and it completely ends any promise at progressing. There is a way to avoid it but you have to take careful steps leading up to this area. It is bullshit.

it's a good game. i really liked it. the mummy puzzles were neat. the lack of voice acting was distracting as the game was clearly designed to HAVE voice acting. but that's a minor complaint. the game mechanics were partially copied from zelda. but they did a good job at copying them. the combat can be a little confusing or arbitrary at times. but all in all it's a very satisfying game with an interesting setting and some pretty cool puzzles. i had lots of fun with it.

also i never encountered the game breaking glitch. but you should probably read up on it if it's that common.

Thanks for the votes of confidence. I'll see if I can pick it up at Fry's, I think they might have the guide as well (which is hard to find now).

I'm being completly serious here and keep in mind that ocarina of time is my second favorite game ever but:

Sphinx >>>>>> Wind Waker

The mechanics were great and the puzzles, especially the mummy ones were awesome.

I really enjoyed it.

Too bad about the
TO BE CONTINUED ending,
though.

It's really sad to watch the documentary extra and see how much time they put into the engine, only it never to be used again. Even if hopes for Sphinx 2 were squashed by bad sales, someone should have stepped up to use it.

Success! Got the last copies of both the game and guide at Fry's, $30 total. Good deal considering the guide alone would have cost me $33 online.

Just make sure you play it ASAP. I purchased a copy from Fry's and when I got around to opening it three days later I found the disk wasn't loose in the case but it was scratched to hell. I had a tough time returning it too since it was the only copy they had.

If you're talking about the save glitch, the only careful steps you have to take leading up to that area are:

..don't save in that room

Also, I think it's a little earlier than 3/4. If the guide doesn't tell you where the glitched save point is, look it up on gamefaqs.

I opened it already, the disc is fine but the back of the case had some weird perforations on it from the cellophane. I can always recase it though.

Yeah my copy had that problem with the case too. I didn't notice the scratches until I tried to boot the game up and couldn't get past the title screen but it sounds like you're safe so nevermind my warning! :)

The game is awesome and gorgeous as well, I'm a huge huge huge fan of it

and just look up on gamefags where the glitch is, if you know where it is its actually really easy to avoid and it's at about 1/3 - 1/2 way through the game

you know I remember an interview ages ago with Eurocomm where they bassicaly said that they were able to make sphinx because they had made enough from doing liscenced games and such, and that even if it didnt sell they were going to make a sequel but I guess not, I guess they changed their minds which is a big shame because of all the shitty games that got sequels this generation I would have gladly traded many of them for 1 sphinx sequel

The engine was used in half a dozen games, actually.
A sequel was planned, but there was no interest from publishers.

Anybody else dread playing as Shpinx? I found myself enjoying the game much more whenever I was playing the Mummy segments.

I really liked this game. Too bad they didn't spring for the voice-acting, but the puzzles and platforming were very well done. I had a demo disk of the game and it was originally called "Sphinx and the Shadow of Set."

| just got through the first Mummy dungeon. I was already digging the game, but that was sex on a stick. I want to do it again.

and the game only gets better

its such a shame there hasnt been a sequel

OK, I got past that glitched save point, which was in the
second Mummy dungeon, right after you see a cut scene involving Set and Horus, and before you enter the fire rooms
. Apparently if you save there, you're OK as long as you save again in the overworld before turning off your system.

Taking a few days off from the game cleared my head a bit. I still love it, but a couple of problems stand out now. The biggest beef I have with the game is the camera, which I constantly have to fight with for control over what I'm supposed to be looking at. It's certainly dramatic to see your lion-tailed hero charging towards the camera, especially when it's not important to see what's ahead, but that doesn't make it any less annoying to have to waggle the C-stick every damn time.

There doesn't seem to be much to do with your currency, either. You can buy monsters and donate them to the museum, and you have to pay your ferryman in scarabs to boat you around. That's it, unless there's something else very late in the game that I'm not aware of. I find it refreshing not to have to farm gold to upgrade my equipment, but I still feel like this part of the game is a little bit limited.

i liked this game. my biggest problem with it wasn't the lack of VA, though--it was that the jumping just felt a little too floaty or something.

I recently discovered another save-destroying bug in the game. It happened about 6 hours into the game.

My brother's 6-yead old kid.

So yeah, back to the tutorial for me.
