How is this EDTV?

Why not? Samsungs seem to have a better reputation lately, and if it's because it isn't HD, that honestly isn't a factor for me. Is this model a dud? =O =(

It's not for $600, but OK. I'm sorry no one had a better case to make than calling me stupid, but I've heard enough to concede.
 
If it's not $600, how much are you getting it for?

EDTV is for those who want a cool LOOKING TV for less money than an HDTV, despite the fact that HD is far better. EDTV resolutions are not anywhere near that of HDTV, so for the money, why wouldn't you just buy a much larger standard def TV? Not sure what the point of buying this is.
 
Here's a set that's only about $200 more, but much much MUCH better (27", 720p HD, etc.).

Best price I could find on this was $512 shipped from NewEgg. Which still seems like a lot of money....

Viewsonic set looks awesome though.
 
I wouldn't buy a larger CRT television, either SD or HD, because I cannot fit them. This is not for a living room or den; it's meant to fit in a snug corner. LCD HD units of this size look to be outside of my budget ($500) and 20-inch CRTs at a high definition don't yet exist to my knowledge. I like posting to have questions like these answered, because I'm a technological neophyte. I concede that you people know better about these subjects than I do, if that would make you feel better. But what's with the attitude?

But one more suggestion before you plunge into that Sammy. Why not ratchet down the size a peg or two and get a HD LCD TV? Sammy makes a 17" and 19" 1280x1024 LCD TV IIRC. Probably around the same price as your pick.

edit: I'm so fucking good! 19" and $500 at best buy to boot!

Seriously, EDTV is a rip off. If you need a TV and have the cash, then go for it if that's what you want. However, you'd be better off saving your cash and getting an actual HDTV of the same size when you can afford it. EDTV just isn't worth the money.

I did see several 20" HDTV's at Best Buy in the $500-600 range. You haven't really said how much you're going to get this one for. If it's a great deal, then perhaps you'd be very happy with it.

I don't think anyone is leaving snide or rude remarks at all. There's just nothing at all redeeming about the tv that was linked in the original pot. In every way, you should be able to get tvs today that are bigger/cheaper/higher resolution. The one you found just sucks.
 
Lo-Volt, just go to Best Buy and check out the floor model for yourself to see the inputs you need. IIRC, it's got a D-SUB to Component adapter cable/break out box packed in.
 
Jeeze, you guys are being such dicks. If someone doesn't have Digital/HD cable and doesn't have any HD media (Blue Ray/HD-DVD), all a HD TV is likely going to do is make all the low-res media you watch look shittier. If you get an EDTV, you get a significant upgrade to your standard resoultion lifestyle, being able to watch DVDs and play games in 480p.

There are a LOT of people who don't see the current HD market as even remotely viable, especially given all the current format/technology wars, and just want to wait until it settles down before they invest in it. Is that so wrong? Is it so wrong to just want a nice standard TV that can do progressive scan?

Edit: I honestly think I'll just stick to a analog CRT. Too many "budgetary constraints" to seriously consider something steeper here.

When with some intelligent shopping around you might be able to find a comparable HDTV? Yeah I think it is wrong.

Hey, I suggested that he get himself a big SDTV instead.

If he gets the EDTV, regular programming and DVDs will be upscaled, and suffer image quality reduction. I don't know if it will display a downscaled HDTV image, but he'd be suffering from the same problems if it did. EDTVs are just a bad idea.
 
That's fine, Ecrofirt. But that's a world of difference from "Go buy it, and post pics, so we can laugh at you" or "if you buy an EDTV you deserve to have your money stolen." It isn't so insulting as it is silly.

That's ok IMO buying an EDTV is just as silly. People complain about BR and HD-DVD being stopgap formats... EDTV is such a stopgap format it's not even funny.

Before the thread dies for good, I think I'll take this advice. Panasonic has always held my loyalty, and there's no reason to defect now. The cathode ray will nuke my face for a few more years, after all :lol

Which one do you have? 7th gen (last years)? Is it the consumer or commercial version? Impressions?

(I'm thinking about getting one)
 
I got the commercial brand two years ago. The 42PWD6UY I believe. I got it online for for about $2700, obviously prices have come down since, but it was a great deal then.

Picture quality is great, especially with my digital cable and game systems. They look best with S-video and DVDs look best with the component cables.

When I bought my Plasma the only difference between the commercial and consumer model was that the consumer model came in with speaker attachments. From most reviews I read, the speaker attachments were garbage anyway. I just wanted to hook my Plasma to my surround sound, so it all worked out.

At the time I bought my Panasonic, the Panasonic plasma TVs had the best black levels out there. I haven't been following plasma reviews lately (I'm totally satisfied with mine), but Panasonics have had the best black levels for Plasma tvs for the past several years including some highend sets.

I don't think I can go back to a regular TV for my home theater. I just love the 180 degree viewing angle of my Plasma. I have an "L" shaped couch in my living room and no matter where you sit, you get excellent picture quality. You can't say the same thing about LCDs or other big HD sets.

I'd say the biggest hassle is just mounting and setting everything up. It takes some pre-planning. Make sure all your cables (especially your component cables!!!) are long enough. Unfortunately, long component cables are very expensive. Also, not all component cables are the same. My Panasonic is only compatible with a certain kind of component cable, which was a real bitch to find. So yes, it was a hassle to setup. But once everything is setup, it's a dream.
