How was Far Cry Xbox?

Thinking about picking this up in the TRU 3 for 2 sale tomorrow. I played through the PC version and enjoyed it until the monster thingies showed up and then I hated the entire rest of the game and thought it was a terrible FPS.

But I remember with the xbox version some people who had played the PC and disliked it said the xbox one was fun because they fixed the problems of the PC one (got rid of the Trigens?).

So to those who played both, is the xbox one indeed a good few days of fun even if you hated the PC game?

I've been playing the game for a few days, both off- and online, and it's good fun. It's pretty hard at times, stealth is really necessary, but enjoyable. I never was a big fan of console FPS games, but this one stands out just a little bit more. Gameplay is really good, and with the placement of traps, feral powers and good firefights I'd quite recommend it. But, I never did play the PC version, so I can't really compare.

My biggest problem is the inclusion of some Flood like beings, small annoying critters that can hurt you pretty bad. I wish developers would stop including creatures like that, I was already sick of them with Halo. Though in Half-Life 2 the headcrabs were pretty cool and not as abundant as these things are.

The feral powers just add so much more to the game, so I guess that's where the strength of this game is.

stealth is not necessary, I've heard this a couple times, but I played through it just like any other FPS. I didn't find the game too hard though either

From what I've played (not a lot, I admit), it certainly seemed to be a lot more interesting and enjoyable than the PC game (which I did not like).

just want to point out that half life 1 had head crabs as well. :)

anyway, i think im gonna rent this one, sounds like it has potential.

game was not hard, cept the escort mission (and people say that wasnt hard either)

the hardest part of the game for me was walking and shooting simultaneously because with the abundance of options they somehow didnt include a controller config with the analog sticks swapped!!!

Feral powers, nerfed AI, and lack of a difficulty slider make this one of the easier run'n gun shooters on Xbox. I haven't beaten the thing yet,(and I will probably sell it before I do) but it's all about loading dual uzi rounds into dinosaurs and mercs when you aren't uppercutting them into oblivion. Oh and listening to a very disgruntled Steven Dorff drive the word 'fuck' into a deeper cliche hole.

I kinda miss painting my prey with the binocs and stalking across acres of underbrush, dealing with airlifted reinforcements when I mess up. Trigen did suck, but this port is overrated.

Hmmm, sounds like something to get if stuff is sold out and I can't find anything for the deal. I'll see what they have in-store tomorrow.

wtf? the game is BRILLIANT! better than the pc game in ever aspect aside visuals, but the visuals arent bad at all! just not hi end pc. but i couldnt reccomend this game ENOUGH, no xbox fanboy here, and i dont even like FPS that much!

but yeah. great game

It's a pretty good game overall. It's just a shame the second half of the game didn't match the first. The game got progressivly worse as it went:

First 3rd - Great
Middle 3rd - Decent
Final 3rd - Poor

The multiplayer is pretty sweet though :)

Also, you can create your own maps. The editor is quite strong, and the maps can be huge! It's a lot of fun playing on custom maps, I've had some which are even better than the ones provided in the game. Of course, making on takes quite some time, but it's worth it!

I normally hate FPS games and only play the ones that I've been told are worth it (by people who I trust about the genre). I loved Far Cry Instincts though. Single player was just about one of the best FPS campaigns on the console...it pisses all over Halo 2's anyway

I can't figure out why some people say this is better than the PC version. Instincts is a pretty fun game, but its way WAY too easy in the single player campaign. The enemy AI that was such a crucial part of the PC rendition is practically none existent in Instincts. I'm usually not one to complain about AI in fps, but, the henchmen in instincts will often just stand there shooting ocasionally as you unload on them. This is unacceptable.

Its cool how the designers were trying to implement certain things like the traps and feral ablilities but you don't need to use them when you can just plow through the game SMG's akimbo. Its got a lot of polish and some nice ideas but the game is cake basically. The multiplayer is very good however, its really the star of the game.

There is some fun to be had with Instincts but its campaign is not the superior version of Far Cry IMO. Anyone who thinks otherwise really needs to go back and play the original again.

Also, F.E.A.R>>Quake 4 booyah! :D

Great shooter with a really great atmosphere, nice selection of stages to play in,vehicles kick ass as well.

UbiSoft does it again. :)

Hell no it wasn't. The AI was truly awful in the PC version, and I don't mean that in the "stand around and do nothing" sense. The enemies basically did not function within their environment properly. Despite the jungle setting, they could spot you from miles away. If you were to snipe one lone enemy from two islands away, EVERYONE in that general area would IMMEDIATELY know your location. The AI was simply not enjoyable to interact with. Bad design.

I admit that I did complete the game, but it was almost entirely due to the visuals. Near the end, I simply enabled god mode and grabbed all weapons. I was simply having no fun with it any longer. There are a scant few GOOD missions scattered in there, though (River, Boat, and a couple others)...but most of them had serious problems.

Now, FEAR has incredible AI. Easily some of the best I've ever encountered. They are aggressive in a realistic fashion and are a blast to fight. It's a shame that, outside of core combat, the rest of FEAR is about as bland as you can get.

I too found the PC version much better. True the designers implemented a lot more things to do, but IMO they just bog the game down,x-box farcry just doesn't flow like the PC version. The Ai definately Isn't as good as the pc version and I guess I'm so use to looking at farcry with a x800xt video card that It looks digusting on the x-box.

I didn't say the AI was spectacular, but it is one of the better parts of the game that the Xbox didn't get. I've played through Far Cry on the PC twice, the second time on the hardest difficulty and I never had an experience where i felt cheated like the one you used as an example, but, i'll humor you and sympathize anyway ;) .

In my experience, and simply comparing the PC and Xbox versions, the AI is much better on the PC. There were some frustrating moments where the AI was able to take shots at me when I thought I was being completely sneaky, but it never felt cheap and i knew i had given up my position in some way. The AI was really aggressive but if you were clever and sneaky you could evade them and counter attack. What made the game satifying to me was the tension filled cat and mouse moments. Instincts sometimes has moments like these but they feel so obvious and contrived.

FEAR has really great AI and awesome atmosphere. But, I will withold the rest of my opinion until after I finish the game ;) But, from what I've played of both FEAR and Quake 4 so far, I gotta give the nod to Monolith.

As far as multiplayer goes far cry is the best fps on xbox.

It would be if the online was a little more stable with controls to keep laggy hosts from overhosting. I'm getting a bit frustrated with Ubisoft online. I'd keep this game without hesitation if they would iron things out.

I have the XBox version, it's pretty good. I'd rate it at about 8.5. Worth a rent at the very least and definately worth buying if you like console FPS.

Get it for the excellent map editor too. You really can produce some fantastic results and it's easy to use. Oh and I think the single player is very good and superior to the PC version.

EXACTLY!! The map editor alone warrants purchase of this title. The online community has put together so VERYU nice maps thus far, and it keeps the game fresh. If you have XBL, then this game has to be in your collection. Play a few games of "Steal the Sample" and "Predator" , you'll be hooked on this game like crack! :lol

I didn't get a chance to play this online, but the SP campaign really was a lot of fun--a lot longer than I expected, too.

The Map editor alone is worth having this game!!!!!!

best editor of it's kind i have had the chance to mess around with to this day.

I'd put Far Cry Instincts in the top 10 Xbox games out there.

A few things out there I don't really agree with. The game is actually at its best in the middle as opposed to the start. The level with the steep cliffs, winding river systems and hang gliders is probably the most wicked environment I've seen in a game this year and that is almost right at the 50% mark. Also, the next level with the high hides and the science lab is possibly the best single experience I've had with a game this year and certainly the most shocking.

After that though, it is does begin to degrade a bit.

Yeah, the enemy A.I. isn't great but it is still fun to blow the crap out of them. Like most FPS games I've seen them do extremely smart things and then the outright stupid.

A.I. in Far Cry for PC was hit and miss. I have sniped guys away from range and their buddies don't know where I am...or even react to their friend dropping in front of them. Oh well, it is a game. Yeah, if they see you they will try to track you to the ends of the earth. In Instincts they will actually give up sometimes and go back to green status.

Stealth isn't necessary but I found that simply charging in like an idiot will either get you killed or will have you scraping your ammo reserves in no time. The other abilities don't get much use if you insist on charging in but if you want to take your time and set up some cool kills there are some wicked ideas in here such as flipping onto your back and getting under buildings.

The level editor is genius. I've spent about 8 hours with it shaping my level and its a blast to use. It is almost a game in itself building the terrain, placing weapons, vehicles, foliage, props, and changing the environment settings for time of day, fog density, and audio levels. I love that you can bake shadow maps into the terrain to finish off the look. It is simply the coolest addition to any game I've seen.

I'd easily give Far Cry Instincts a 9/10. It would get a 10/10 if a few things were cleaned up a bit, if the game was a touch harder, some of the later levels were as interesting as the middle, and if they added body part sensitive hit animations.

The coolest cutscene in the game was when
you wake up from being drugged and you are litterary crushing a guys skull without knowing why you are doing it. Looking around there are even more bodies. Awesome.

Also,
when the other mutants hailed you as the alpha male I got a delightfull ego boost. :D

FEAR > Quake 4

Why waste the TRU deal on Farcry Instincts when target has it on sale for $28.88 this week. I may pick it up myself.

The
first huge Mutant freak in the dark lab coming up against the safety glass and then going on a rampage had me almost shitting my pants!!! The 5.1 audio there shook my room to pieces.

hehe, yeah I did the same. The game was just too annoying and not fun at all by the end so I just god moded so I could see the visuals.

Argghh...too late. Didn't read this thread until after I got back from the sale :(

I'm quite sick of the FPS genre but rented this anyway, and half an hour to an hour in it seemed like another rubber stamp FPS and I had no idea what people were praising. But then it kicked in as I progressed to new levels. The huge, mountainous jungle environments are truly gorgeous
especially when you sail through them on a hang glider
, the AI is decent, the game has a sense of humor and the plot isn't off-putting. I had several 4+ hour sessions with it, which is the sign of a good game.

I also thought the game really picked up in the middle. When I first started playing, I wasn't feeling it - it was decent fun, but somewhat dull. Once I started getting the feral abilities, though, I really started enjoying myself. Feral punching a guy off of a cliff and listening to his girlish scream trail off as he falls is wonderfully satisfying. As you mentioned, some of the best level design in the game is in the middle as well.

The fun does drop off near the end, but overall, I feel that Far Cry Insticts is well worth a purchase.

it's about ten times better than the crap that is halo 2. Think about that then get the fucking thing asap. Then meet me online for team chaos.
