How was G4/TechTV's E3 coverage last year?

I got this channel around 6 months ago...and recently cancelled.

But would it be worth it for E3 alone? Inquiring minds...want to know!

They spent more time covering their G4 area where people got "cool" G4 tattoos than the actual show. I imagine the screen savers show will have one of their anchors out there covering it.

What E3 coverage?

I dont know if it's lack of budget or whatever, but G4 needs to get their ass in gear and provide us with live feed footage of the press conferences or whatever. You guys want ratings? Show us stuff that we want to see. I don't care about your E3 content that you'll be spreading throughout the year for your regular programming

I remember a few years back, when it was just TechTV, they actually had some live coverage of press conferences and crap. I was home sick, flipping through channels, and saw E3 coverage. I was so psyched.

But last year was shit coverage, don't reorder it.

Yeah G4TV is a real letdown. X-Play and Filter are the only two shows I catch on a semi-regular basis. The rest of it is garbage. G4TV.com is just fucking lame most of the time. I mean I like discussion panels and all, but those chicks are so annoying. They talk way too fast and never stay on topic for long. Its like they have ADD and have to hear themselves talking at all times. Plus their info is fucking wrong sometimes.

Man I would sure run that station differently. I think I might hit their official site and see what useful tools I can dig up.

G4 is absolutely pitiful when it comes to coverage of any live event. The only thing g4 does each year is make shitty "E3 Editions" of all their already crappy shows weeks later. Although last year they threw together some 30 minute summaries, woo hoo! I have no idea why they think not airing E3 for real wouldn't be profitable, it's not like showing Filter and JD reruns would be so much better. There's over a million things wrong with g4, but I think the E3 coverage sums up just how awful this network is ran.

If their record is any indication, there won't be any coverage. Like PRJ said a few years back Tech tv had live floor info, and the pr events. Last year's "coverage" was a joke. Based on how rapidly the channle has gone downhill, I expect shitty coverage this year.

Well I guess that's a bit comforting :P

Really though, hope you guys can get live feeds of the press conferences, that's all I really want

I remember that they covered the Nintendo press conference when the Gamecube was unveiled, their coverage last year sucked though.

Well...it costs $2 a month to have the channel...so maybe I'll just get it for that one month.

Thanks for answering guys, I had no idea if it was good or bad...you'd think that it would be super-mega ratings season for those guys if they had a good amount of coverage.

Well...I was thinking that if they were going to have great coverage, they'd start advertising it NOW...in order to try to gain as many subscribers as they can before E3 starts.

Or they'd keep it quiet so their competitors don't know what they're up to.

I really don't think anyone will be disappointed in the E3 coverage this year.

Competitors? I haven't noticed too many videogame orientated cable TV channels on my cablebox.

I'd say the GDC has given me a fair amount of confidence in my view. If G4 has decent coverage, great. But G4 has been less and less about games and more and more about trying to be MTV.

The tattoos were 2 years ago, IIRC. Last year's coverage was pretty weak. Most of the news G4 gave came out after the fact. The G4TV.com coverage really pathetic as it became more about the hosts than the actual news. What made it worse is the fact they were LIVE at the event. Instead of saying, "Sony unveiled xxxx today", it was more like "Today I went to the Sony conference and it was pretty cool!!!!"

Hopefully this year, they will have their crap together, but G4 has dropped the ball in year's past. I would expect all the conferences live and a replay of the conferences at night, plus in-depth coverage of the E3 floor. By in-depth, I mean more than a 45-second walkthrough.

G4 has been a pretty dissapointing channel, and they've ruined TechTV, but I have a LITTLE bit of faith in them for E3. No faith for the rest of the channel, though, but E3?> Yes.

I won't lament on how much G4 has dissapointed me, though.

If you want any current gaming news, screen savers is the only hope. It used to be pulse, which was only gaming news for an hour, now they condensed it into a small segment in the screen savers. Personally, I like the girl and both Kevins on TSS, not because of their game coverage, but because their banter and jokes are similar to forum humor (since they spend lots of time on forums). As entertainment it's pretty fun, but for gaming info it's pure shit.

are there any websites that do live streams from E3?

being in the uk and busy with work, there's no way that i can go over there and would love to watch the coverage.

Nintendo has their press conference live on their site, that's how I saw it last year and the Zelda trailer thing was pretty crazy.

Riiight. Wouldn't want BET to find out what G4 is up to! What a lame statement. Tommy Talarico is that you? Only HE would come up with a reply this retarded.

Seriously, if G4 covers E3 in a relevant way, I'd be so happy. I've only had it for one year and they completely fail to impress. Last year's E3 coverage is STILL running now like it's news. C'mon. Have one big week of coverage and then drop it. It just looks sad to have E3 previews of games that have been out on shelves for months now.

And when you celebrate a big game's launch, (Halo 2, GTA:SA) do us a favor next time and focus on the NEW game. GTA day was just a shit-ton of footage from older GTA's. Whoo hoo. Next time, show somebody playing through the first hour or so of the new game. Shoot some NEW footage instead of reaching into your archives to replay the same footage again and again.

Only GAF could miss the point of a statement so universally. Do you really think "competition" in this context refers to other TV stations and not other gaming news sources?

Dude, what's to hide? Seriously. Its not like anything happens at E3 that doesn't get spilled all over every print mag or website. And the "behind closed doors" stuff surely would apply to G4 as well as every other "competitor" with the right badges.

Nino, I totally agree with everything you just said! Especially the last part about those "special days", god are those worthless. You'd think it would be more practical to put together a one or two hour special to celebrate the new title rather than digging up a bunch of almost irrelevant reruns, the only thing that almost saves those events are the Xplay premieres they lead up to.

Matt, if you're for real, I'd be more than happy repost my own negative quotes from every E3 thread about G4. It's just looking at the way they still are with most important events, it seems like they'll probably give their coverage some stupid new name and promo campaign and do the same thing all over again. Guess we'll just have to wait and see I guess.

For G4TechTV to say "we'll have 5 reporters scouring the floor", "plan to have 24 hour dedication to the Expo" (where they can have 12 hours of stuff, then replayed in the evening), "we'll have first hand accounts of private showings", etc....really wouldn't be giving much important info to their "competitors", but would do enough to garner attention from gamers and maybe boosting subscriptions to that channel.

I see E3 being like how Christmas to a retail store. It's vital to it's survival. E3 can get G4TechTV a lot of content, attention and most importantly subscribers.

God, I should run that channel. Them and SEGA. I'd take em to the top! :P

You're welcome to if you like, but since I'm on X-Play, I wasn't involved with previous G4 E3 coverage. I'm just saying that what's planned for this year is far beyond anything previously attempted.

I will say x-play is probably g4'as best show. But the jokes and what not are getting wonky. I'd say you guys had the right formula a year or so ago.
