Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Thread

This is a natural disaster of untold scale, and probably the only reason so few have died is because unlike an earthquake/tsunami, we knew about it well in advance. But the destruction is epic, on top of the fact that it happened within the confines of a major U.S. city.

Here are a couple of links to get things started. The Red Cross allows you to donate directly to the 2005 Hurricane Relief fund, which is tantamount to direct donations to Katrina victims:

American Red Cross:
https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp

ASPCA's Hurricane Katrina Fund:
https://secure2.convio.net/aspca/site/Donation?ACTION=SHOW_DONATION_OPTIONS&CAMPAIGN_ID=4761

Donate, it won't kill you. However much you want to throw into the coffers is up to you. Obviously, feel free to provide more links.

I thought about it today..

Im an American before Im a citizen of the world.

Will donate as soon as I see how much is in my bank account tomorrow.

That's my plan. I have a hard time trusting the Red Cross, after reading up about the mishandling of money in the past. :\

It's not easy to manage funds like that anyway. But they've had a re-org, and I would be absolutely comfortable with donating directly to the Red Cross. My thing is, if I know I'm going there, I would be helping the city directly through tourism. Sure, it doesn't help the hungry, starved people of today... hell, who knows, I might just contribute anyway...

*bout to post in Hurricane thread*

Is anyone gonna make a relief thread in hopes that it gets stickied?

*looks at top of forum*

Oh. :)

You are assuming it is going to get back to normal...

forget tomorrow..
its done.

come on ppl. You guys were here for the Tsunami thread, NO needs this too.

I wish there was more I could do...but this will have to do for now.

I'm donating. I don't have a job right now, but I'm donating.

But I agree, if you could donate for the tsunami you can definitely donate for this.

Of course it will. I hope my original post didn't make you guys think that I could care less about New Orleans or most of Mississippi (80% of the state has NO electricity), but having survived a large disaster, people will find a way to get back on their feet.

I do it every month as an automatic deduction from my paycheck, but a conscious deduction wouldn't hurt, especially in this case, lesse what I got...

Donated and Friday I will be trying to get back home to my Family and friends(hoping everyone is alright) in Gulfport who did not leaveI will be bringing with me all the tools and water I can carry for the community.

I gave up $75 today to the Red Cross. Sure I will be broke for a week, but it is worth it if it helps out the people who were affected.

If anyone is in Houston and interested, I am going to try to find out what we can do in person. I will post when I find out.

That's lots, man. It's just that some people think $5 isn't enough to make a difference when it does.

Heh maybe in East Africa, but in the US I think $5 is marginal heh.

I thought about matching my donation that I made to 4chan then I got an email from ADV about their Labor day sale.

edit:

Just so no one gets pissed off I am only joking $750 to Redcross $250 to the animals :p

I am trying to find out. I should know something this evening, I will post in this thread.

Dskillz, try calling CSC, the company I used to work for. Well, they'd only be able to help out with the keeping people in one place part, but well, it's a start. you can see if you can get any info from them, and if so, post it here if you can.

The CSC number is 7136671570.
I'll call them later today too, and see if I can get any info out of them.

FYI: For you Houstonians, I donated 19.10 to the Sportsradio 610 N.O. fund. ^_^.

I plan on probably donating more once I get my next check, but I'm strapped for cash at the moment. Anyway, I'll see what I can find out.

Me too, I donate $15/month (CDN).

I will contribute when I get home (possibly to the one that matches .50 cents) but damned if I don't feel like going down there for the long weekend to help out. Where the heck could you go though? Did you find anything out Dskillz?

Right now it seems that money is all that they are asking for at the moment. That will change once more people get here. If you are interested, e-mail: mark_sloan@co.harris.tx.us and that office will keep you updated on volunteer opportunities. There has not been a shortage of people helping, at the Astrodome yesterday many people who wanted to help were turned away because they had more than enough people already. I am thinking that most help is going to be needed at the shelters. Maybe distributing supplies or accepting donations and such.

Maybe buy some toys or board games, I sure there are going to be alot of kids brought to the Astrodome with nothing...It may sound silly but I'm sure young ones are in a state of shock and would enjoy having something to take their mind off it for a few moments...

Probably crayons and paper too...a lot of kids express themselves through art, and at a traumatic time like this it may help them cope and deal in ways they can't otherwise express.

I don't have a lot of money, but I think my usual (small) videogame budget is getting donated. Damn, I have to do something, and I can't exactly go build houses for people (because I am so weak and useless.)

Houston Gaffers: does anyone know if the new huge-ass Lakewood church is housing people? Because they should be.

That's a great idea. I'd like to send a few GBAs or DSes and pre-package some games. Any idea who I could send them to?

Mig or DSkillz, if you find me online, IM me your info. I'll put together a care package this week for the little kids. And I'm gonna do a total 180 and send some cash to one of the charities.

My job is asking for clothes, toys, food, etc. to give directly to the people at the Astrodome. Wasabi, I will PM you my information and you can get that package to me. I have a bag of clothes that I will be bringing up here tomorrow. I need to wash them to be sure they are clean.

Anyone know of a way to donate if you don't have a credit card? I was able to donate $20 for the tsunami (Wal-Mart had this thing set up), and I'd like to do the same here, but I'm drawing blanks as far as ways to go about it on this one.

Yeah, you guys can send whatever you want to send to me, or to Dskillz, i know he's looking around to find ways to help out too. Anyway, Jay, Wellington, you guys have my AIM and email address I think. I know Wasabi has my GTalk account name too, so you can message me there and I'll check it when I get back from work. I know CK has my number, so you can leave me a voicemail and I'll call you back.

I'll be headed out to the Dome either Sunday or Monday, but possibly both days. I'll also do this next weekend and probably at least one day a week in the coming weeks.

I spoke with a friend of mine who is staying in Houston now cause his house is under 3-4 feet of water. He says he expected it to be much worse because he's near the airport and there were reports of the airport being 7-8 feet underwater. I guess his neighborhood may have been on a higher level than the airport.

He managed to salvage his PC (WOO!) and a few other things, but he says his drawings and stuff he had was left on top of a dresser I believe...so it's a possibility that those didn't get too ruined, although if there's that much water, stuff starts to float and, well, tip over.

It sucks. He sounds like he's in high spirits, but it really sucks. Anyway, um, I think that's it.

Yeah, I'm probably going to get some stuff so kids can share and play together. Of course, there aren't many choices other than footballs and soccer balls :( Any suggestions?

Donated $20 to the Red Cross--the least I can do, considering what those people are going through.

@ Wellington--a good idea to send toys to the kids, but I might consider something that doesn't require charging (like a DS would). If you're an eight-year-old kid, having a brand new DS, Nintendogs, and no way to play it because you had no electricity could conceivably be worse than not having a DS at all.

Good thing I waited to donate. I was only going to do $25, but seeing all of the new destruction coverage has really got to me.

$50 it is (for now).

I'm doing the Red Cross donation.
