also some places don't always do stool cultures, ova/parasite tests, or fecal white blood cell tests or what all. i mean it's not always necessary, seeing as common things are common and gastroenteritis is pretty common. the majority of the time, those tests aren't going to tell you anything you don't already know, and won't really change your management. i mean it definitely wouldn't have hurt to run the stool studies, and if they were negative or came back with the usual culprits it would back up their diagnosis, but maybe the ER people felt like gambling a little.
