Hytale development resumed.

Hytale, a promising Minecraft clone with 10 years of development funded by Riot Games was canceled this summer. Now the project continues with Riot removed from the equation.

A new and exciting chapter for Hytale begins today.

We are thrilled to announce that we have acquired Hytale from Riot Games. While it didn't make sense for them to continue developing it in its existing form, they ultimately wanted what's best for players, and that's for us to eventually play a revised version of the game. We are grateful to Riot Games for making this possible.

Over the past few weeks, we have rehired more than 30 developers who know this game inside and out, with additional returns expected in the coming days. Together, we are going back to the original vision for Hytale. We are fully independent and personally committed to funding Hytale for the next 10 years.

Transactions like this are rare in the games industry. Thank you to everyone for keeping hope alive.

Hytale is saved.

TL;DR

  • Early access date: To be announced in the coming days
  • Platform: Windows at launch, Linux / Mac will be attempted, other platforms much later
  • Pricing: Details to be announced in the coming days
  • Early access state: Expect bugs, rough edges, unbalanced content, and frequent updates that break things
  • Early access duration: Expected to last at least a few years; no rush to "1.0"
  • Launch content: Exploration Mode, Creative Mode, and Modding
  • Not at launch: Minigames and Adventure Mode (both come later; dedicated team for minigames)
  • Ownership: We own 100% of Hytale (repurchased from Riot Games)
  • Funding: 10-year personal funding commitment; no investors or publishers
  • Game build: Using the previous engine from the trailer, enabling faster development and immediate playability
  • Modding: Available at launch. Run your own servers and create custom content.

They posted a 16 minute video showing a lot of combat, enemies and various environments. 10:55 show the map screen and 15.05 a peak at the creation tools.
I have ambivalent feelings about the combat, enemies are super tanky and it looks needlessly complex. Looks more like Cube World than Minecraft from this slice, I'll attribute that to Riot's influence.

Went to see if I could wishlist this on steam. Wtf, Valve?

Steam (& Google btw) need a "did I stutter?" checkbox. So you only get relevant search results. Or just use quotation marks, i.e. "Hytale" in your search.

Will the game come on Steam? I kinda doubt it. If Epic or Sony wants it they'll throw sacks of money at the developer, a game Valve does not play.

I don't mean to sh*t on Team Asobi or Sucker Punch, but WTF are these mid sized teams doing not making something like this? It's only a matter of time before one of these with good production values sells 30+ million copies. This looks incredible.

Yeah every dev should try and make the same game. It works so well for everyone making hero shooters.

That's the thing. Not many AA or AAA studios are making these types of games. Instead we get the Ubislop formula from everyone for 25 years straight.

I know you like to troll a lot but can you please explain how this is "incredible".

It looks like Minecraft, a game that is probably better in every single way.

These guys worked for a decade and even had Riot funding them. I think they planned poorly, had to rewrite the engine and suffered nuclear feature creep when it was already way too ambitious.
It happens to the best of us, Blizzard shitcanned Avalon, their Minecraft clone after 2 years of development.

Keen Games, the guys behind Portal Knights worked fast, set realistic goals and got a passable product. It did not set the world on fire, but they did not lose money on it. Now they self-publish Enshrouded, an open world survival/crafting game. A genre where you sell 1M easy if the game is passable.

I love the part in movies, usually a Western, where the guy looks around at his surroundings and goes "We'll build it here".

The Ubislop formula of having your base in a set destination, and you can only upgrade it after you finish a certain mission is dog **** in my opinion. This just feels way more immersive imo.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to make a Minecraft clone?

As a longtime Minecraft player who's been playing it since the alpha days back in 2010 (back when we had GAF Minecraft servers!), I must admit I relish the concept of someone making a good modern alternative to Minecraft. I'm honestly surprised Microsoft hasn't put more effort into updating the game more meaningfullly.

Has anyone tried the early access yet?

No, but tons of gameplay videos are popping up on YouTube right now and it honestly looks pretty great? I mean its still clearly early access so not a final release by any means, but what I've seen so far looks incredibly promising and appealing to me as a Minecraft original player.

Here is a good preview of the first half hour or so of playing the game, I think it seems pretty awesome:

Its pretty damn fun, been playing for a total time of 8 hours or so, running around in copper armor and been building my first little house. Gonna go and continue explore a underground area that i have as a neighbour, have seen some iron down there, but also some enemies that does look like they arent for copper armor so to speak.

What is this game doing that Minecraft isn't? Genuine question why the interest on this is so high.

From what I can tell after watching a few videos:

- Has more appealing graphics.
- Has more mobs, both friendly and enemy.
- Break the lower block of a tree and the whole thing falls, no floating trees.
- Many QoL features over Minecraft, like no crafting grid, auto hopping up 1 block height, buttons to craft a bundle of items at once, etc.
- Hytale is more quest focused, like a light RPG version of Minecraft, but can still just explore and build if you want.
- From what I've read its very mod friendly, much more so than Minecraft is.

It just seems like a more modern streamlined Minecraft from what I can tell.

Sounds like a 3D Terraria.

Seems too late to be honest.
Not only is there Minecraft for this market, but there's so many other survival crafting games that are amazing and look far better than this, both visually and in their features.
