I am not a big fan of the collectable aspect of the new Doom games

Getting the secrets makes each level three times as long, but skipping them will mean you won't get as many upgrades.

I don't like this dynamic, I feel chained down by it.

I like these new Doom games, but half of the time I am trying to find a way into a secret room to pick up a crystal I don't want to get the final form of my skull launcher.

I find that fun addition. They are not too hard to find. Gives me nice downtime between tense encounters.

Especially cool is they show you item in game world, then you have to figure out how to reach it.

I think the biggest thing is that you do have to toggle back to the map a lot. But other than that I enjoy it. It really isn't hard to find any of it because the map is so well done. One of the clearest 3D maps I've seen. Shows you where you haven't been. Has icons for everything. You usually just have to find a small hidden thing.

I stopped to upgrade my gear pretty soon, but, yeah, it sucks.

They tried so hard to catch the feel of the original DOOM. For me was an absolute welcome. Too bad they created a modern Frankenstein collecticon that feels like a slog and can't hold a candle to alot of indie shooters and mods, in terms of exploration and good level design.

Back in my day the secret rooms in DOOM were literally just random secret doors you had to find by running along the wall tapping space. You young whipper snappers get a fancy smancy 3D map showing you where to go! Kids these days…

Yeah that's a problem with the new DOOMs. In the old ones, you'll be hunting for secrets for better weapons, ammo, soul spheres and whatnot. You really needed to get that shit. In the new ones you are a killing machine even in close-quarters and can produce ammo from your chainsaw, so you really don't need to hunt for shit.

Eternal did it right by hidding the keys to the slayer gates. Not something you need, but instead a super fun challenge that the player won't want to miss. Much better than just getting a collectible funko pop.
