I am ridiculously bad at MGS3... any tips?

BAAAALLLINNN'
Seriously, I am horrible. So bad in fact, I can't even pass the first group of guards. Yes, the initial set of three guys is giving me a world of trouble.

Yeah i changed my camo and my face paint so that I can hide in the grass better, but I can't seem to be able to sneak up on them at all. Every time I want to go stabby stabby, the guy notices me and turns around. I've managed to get two of the three guys without them being able to alert the base, but I an never get the last one.

Is this really a joke by Kojima? Is the hardest part of the game right up front and then the rest of it is a walk in the park? Please say yes. :(

What's killing me is the lack of shit to hide behind argh. Feels like I am playing Splinter Cell.

Just murder them all and don't stop killing until the alarm stops. In Normal mode this is pretty easily accomplished since they don't do very much damage.

Or use the D-pad to walk so quietly that they can't hear you behind them. Once you get the ability to do CQC, learn that instead.

no, don't play that way, the game's much more fun if you learn stealth. Just keep retrying and try and find a method that works. Use magazines to distract guards away from where you're gonna go, read the manual on CQC and other info, and crawl a lot until you get a better handle on the system. I think they have some videos also that show you how to apply some moves. From the new game/load game/options menu. Somewhere in there.

If possible, headphones. I played the game like that and it improved it a lot. I was able to tell where everything was without a problem. Making sure to move the camera around a lot before making a move is important. Also, less killing dudes and more sneaking around dudes is the way to do it in MGS3, at least, that's how I went about it. And border is right - CQC is where it is at.

Also, if you have AIM, feel free to message me and I'll see what I can do.

Walk with the d-pad, it's called stalking. The soldiers won't be able to hear your footsteps. You could also tranq them from afar and drag them bodies away from the rest of the soldiers. From there you can wake him up and interrogate him, hold him hostage, whatever. Or you could just shank him while he's asleep.. P

yes! I kinda did this subconsciously but the sound in this game is amazing. That gives me a good feel where people are a lot of times

Oh, also, you have an AP sensor in your bag, as well as a SONAR (don't do it when they're close or they will here you) and a motion detector in your backpack. Those should help out too.

Yeah, two days ago those fuckers owned me. But now....

Crawl in the grass thru the log and wait there util the first guard walks past. Then crawl out and run down towards the trees where the gaurd walks in a circle. The circle guard should be on the far side of the area now, across from you. Run to your left and hids in either the hollow tree ot against the group of trees behind that. When duder walks past, stalk him (d-pad) and CQC him into submission, I reccomend just jitting the circle button once hard in every oppurtunity you have (it'll be funny later). Once thatg guard is down run his backtrail to to group of tress that stits near the exit to the north. You can look through these trees at the patrolling guard, so when he is walking away from you, just stalk over to the grass, then crawl out of the area.

Until you learn CQC, which is basically assimilatin what timings and pressures the game wants for actions you've been doing since MGS one, getting past guards seems a much bigger problem than it is.

After ths first area, I never got stuck in a sneaking section for more than half a dozen tries or so. Equiping your fake death pill and using it when you get seen makes restarting the section much faster.

Do you pick up more fake death pills in the game? Or just five for the whole thing? I never used them until one of the final areas. Other than that I just used it if I got caught and wanted to start over quickly.

You can't do CQC before Operation Snake Eater, can you?

It takes a while to get used to the jungle setting. You cant really use the same tactics as the other games. The camo wont help you as much as you think, although later on you'll take advantage of it. I tend to take them out from far away, and when the other guards investigate I get them too. If you're really stuck, you can always just run to the next area. If you die, you start in that location with no alarm.

Just come up behind a guy with your pistol or knife equipped and press and hold the circle button HARD to slit his throat. Even if he sees you, you've got a second or so to slit his throat before he can usually call for help.

I ddin't think they were limited. If you never use the revival pills then you never really use a fake deth in any case. We're just trying to restart a botched attempt as fast as possible.

Yes, if you've got a knife out, you can CQC. All it boils down to is grabbing a guard from behind like we did hundreds of times in two previous games.

The temptation is always there to do that, but some of my most fun moments with MGS3 have been in the heated firefights as I try to find a new hiding place.

Hiding is retarded. After an alert goes off the only sensible decision is to either run to the next area (and hope a cutscene kills the alert), kill all guards, or take the death pill and restart.

Even if you find a successful hiding spot, it takes FOR-EVER for the Caution mode to cycle down completely. Any guards you stealth-killed will have been replaced. Why sit around for 3-4 minutes to get back to a situation that is no better than the one you would be in if you had just killed yourself?

Primarily because it's fun. Take away the option for a free restart and the game becomes much more realistic and intense. If I had taken damage in the encounter, I might find a spot to camp until I regain some health, then head back out while still in Caution mode (that's the part that takes the longest, assuming you don't get stuck in Alert mode forever).
