I am such a jackass. (Sales presentation-related)

Like I posted before, our personal selling class is making us do sales presentations. Well, I'm doing the Xbox 360. Another guy (to my surprise) spoke today about the Playstation 3. Very casual perspective. As a matter of fact, he knew very little if anything about Blu-Ray, thought the system was definitely launching in all regions in March, and gave it a 399 price tag. This was among the many other problems with the presentation, which included the fact that most of it was a Amored Core 4/Fight Night 3 video.

Well, when I called him on those 3 things mentioned above (price, date, Blu-Ray) the class looked at me like I was some sort of monster. I never realized how much information we have swirling about us on these forums until I asked someone who doesn't. And what do I know about the PS3 relative to, say, sonycowboy? VERY, VERY little.

Still, I feel like crap. I apologized to the guy afterwards and he seemed cool about it, but I know he was embarrassed. Heck, I'm embarrassed.

:(

Tell him the truth!

He's a total marketing failure.

actually.. he will make it in marketing.. those guys know nothing.. it is scary how little they know most times

They probably think your some type of industry insider now. I suggest trying to rap to the honeys in the class.

haha, nice

i still find it funny when one group presented in one of my classes and said xbox was the best selling console in america. and for some reason they mentioned nintendo ds as a competitor. i let it slide though cause i am not a jackass except on the internets

My favorite comment of the day came from a student who said

"Ooh dude, you basically just told him he was full of shit."

but it was true wasn't it?

and yes, it is a funny thing how much we know in comparison to average joe. it's funny hearing people talking about x360 and PS3 at university. so many half truths and outright bullshit, but you just have to bite your tongue.

Yeah, I do my best to let it slide whenever I find myself in situations like that. I've had people tell me everything from "Did you know the next Zelda is going to be on the Xbox since Nintendo lost so much money this year?" to "The Playstation 3 will be able to play Xbox 360 games." I figure I've got two options:

1.) Go into "Haleon" mode and start refuting everything they say and provide link-by-link proof off of Google complete with developer statements.

2.) Keep my mouth shut and not let people know how much of a fucking nerd I am when it comes to video games.

I usually just say something like, "Really? That's cool. I didn't know that."

If it's completely absurd the most I'll do to argue is be like, "I don't know man, that sounds kind of hard to believe."

Yeah I hear some really stupid stuff all the time from school, friends, and Gamestop employees. Sometimes it's like, "wow where do they come up with this crap?" and I want to tell them the entire story, but I try to be nice about it.

Although I remember a long time ago I was talking to a kid about Grand Theft Auto 3 and he was like, "Yeah, that game looks really cool! I'm definitely gonna get it when it comes out for my Xbox!" And I was like, "You better pick up a PS2 dude, it's never coming out for the Xbox."

Yeah, I was wrong on that one. Worst part is, the kid bought a PS2 and everything. Oh well...

Just say it's not true. Come on, you're not a wimp, right?

He was presenting incorrect information and you corrected him. There's no reason to feel bad about that. He should have done his homework.

Yeah totally true. But still, props for bringing the knowledge :) Better to be well-informed rather than know little about you're selling.

Working at a videogame store is like 10 times worse. I'm so glad that period of my life is over. You'd hear the most retarded stuff, but you couldn't really call them on it.

"Did you know that Xbox signed a deal with Square? Final Fantasy is coming to the Xbox!"

me"

"mmm.."

They didnt look at you like a "monster", Im sure they were all pissed off at the flaming nerd who wouldnt shut up about videogames in class. Two guys went off about HalfLife2 in a database class last semester and still it was annoying, I just wanted to slap them for being nerds.

I have called people out on it before, and it never ends well. It's always like,

Some guy: Hey! Did you know that Microsoft just bought Nintendo so all Nintendo games will be available on the Xbox.
Me: Where did you hear that from? That's not true at all.
Some guy: Yeah it is. My uncle/brother/friend/cousin works at Microsoft/Nintendo/EGM and they told me themselves.
Me: You're full of shit, dude.
Some guy: Whatever, you just don't know about it yet. You'll be eating your words when you play Zelda on the Xbox.
Me: Alrighty then.

I mean, neither side ever conceeds the other's point, so why argue?

Why act like your stupid?
Just ask him to wait and see, as he'll do ;)

I don't consider it acting stupid as much as I just choose to hide my embarassingly vast knowledge about the video game industry. Acting stupid would be me saying, "Really? That's AWESOME. I'm buying an Xbox tomorrow!"

Hell, listen to the guys on This Week in Tech and Diggnation talk about them and it's the same thing. :lol

Hey, I'm pretty insulted.
That's what I do for a living, heh.

There's nothing wrong with correcting facts. He obviously didn't research anything much so you but your Xbot smackdown across his PS3 bow. That's nothing to be ashamed of.

Seriously though. I've never found it a bad thing to tell the truth.
