Automaticity /ˌɔːtəməˈtɪsɪti/ is the ability to do things without occupying the mind with the low-level details required, allowing it to become an automatic response pattern or habit. It is usually the result of learning, repetition, and practice. Examples of tasks carried out by 'muscle memory' often involve some degree of automaticity.

Examples of automaticity are common activities such as walking, speaking, bicycle-riding, assembly-line work, and driving a car (the last of these sometimes being termed "highway hypnosis"). After an activity is sufficiently practiced, it is possible to focus the mind on other activities or thoughts while undertaking an automatized activity (for example, holding a conversation or planning a speech while driving a car).”

I’ve done it so many times over my life but didn’t really know what to call it. I’ve driven for hours at a time and almost snapped to at some point and realize I had stopped thinking about driving but my body just kept going.

I ran across it while researching calorie burning while playing BeatSaber on expert+. Lots of people were saying that the muscle memory and Rhythm has their bodies on autopilot after a while, someone chimes in with the word automaticity.

it’s interesting to put a name and definition to something I’ve done for years that I couldn’t define.

Just figured I would share.

I used to have an hour drive each way to work for years. I would start the drive fine, very aware then the next thing you know I’m 5 minutes from the house. It used to kinda freak me out but I got used to it after a while.

I remember reading once that if something happened on the road when you're in this state you would react just as you would if you were fully focused on driving.

I find that I do this if I am driving home from work and talking on my phone. I'm actively watching the road and driving, but next thing I know, I am home and don't remember much of the drive.
