i don't get this new trend...and it's driving me nuts

JokerMM

Gay porn is where it's at.
i'm watching someone play Forespoken and man i just realized something

the recent trend of having some sidekick/character not being able to just SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET US PLAY THE GAME IN PEACE AND AT OUR OWN PACE

It seems we just cant think for ourselves while playing games anymore, there must be guiding voices and augmented reality waypoints that literally reveal everything behind the walls because our feeble senses of sight and hearing are just not enough for such complex gameplay features like basic level exploration.

are we getting mentaly downgraded as species for these developers to feel the need to do this shit nowdays?

Redfall seems to have the same problem. Skip to 3:39.

2012 was the year of the bow. This is the year of dear god please shut the fuck up!

I feel like Uncharted popularized it especially with the helping with puzzles. I recall during Uncharted 2 it was being appluaded for having someone talking all the time.

Same in God of War there are riddles but actually there aren't. Thats why this video movies games are successful. They play themselves there is no failure. Whenyou start ragnarok you dont even need to take the pad its controling on its own at the chase. Jump here press O you cant die nothing. Gaming became too mainstream. That is its issue.

If a game is just remotely hard its trash for most ppl. They cant learn anymore. Fake success or nothing.

Thats why Elden Ring is so important for the gaming scene. It will hopefully shape games back what they were. Since devs only copy what makes money anyway.

Also you can thank marvel trash, for writers who are stuck as 12 year olds. The problem when the movies came out they saw it made billions made games with such writing. To bad it take years to get s game out. Years later its already outdated. As even most marvel projects flop by now.

They are simply braindead. Look at movies, music, games. I have never seen and heard more trash than in the 2020 ies. Im so glad i was born in the early 90.

It's games being designed for the new kids that have the attention span of a goldfish

Thank you for saving me 80Euros.

Dark souls became popular when AAA games were starting to become brain dead easy.

Elden ring blew up at a time when developers are getting a bit overzealous about accessibility.

Time is a flat circle.

The board room game design philosophy. Make every game as accessible to as many people as possible and throw in safe dialogue quips. It's plaguing all third person action games. Elden Ring 2 should give torrent some dialogue. "You can jump on the vortex to break your fall…buuuut you already know that."

It honestly drives me crazy. God of War (puzzles), Horizon and Forspoken did this frequently and it made the game worse. It was so bad it made me want to mute all voices.

This is why I appreciate From Software games so much.

I muted the voice for a bit in Horizon because it was driving me crazy. Then found I was stuck at a part where she's been trying to point out a ladder the whole time.

At least in Forspoken there is a setting for how often Cuff speaks. Setting it to only speaking when story progress requires it makes it much less annoying versus games with something similar that have no option like that. Putting that setting in is pretty much admitting they knew Cuff was going to be annoying so not sure why they didn't just change plans altogether :pie_eyeroll:

This post is spot on and exactly how I feel about entertainment nowadays.

its not just you if you are at least 26 years old up to 60 or even more as a gamer you witnessed the shitshow live.

forspoken best recent example it's complete garbage in every way. Graphics, Audio(surround is broken), art, writing, i would say if you tell an ai to make a game forspoken is what you get.

when ps3 launched or ps2 and 1 era, so many good games released. You could buy them blind and had fun. today almost ecerything is copy paste or flops spectacularly. then there are the 2-3 real good games in a year . but we had like 30 or more years ago. remakes, remasters. no one needs that we all play the same shit day in day out. wow dead space im hyped af NOT. Better graphics will not change a game in any significant way. You know exactly what you get for full price of course which is insane. no matter if its a REMAKE. The blueprint is still already build. Its in no way like making a new game from ground up. remake should be 29.99 at best.

I think Uncharted & The Last of Us definitely popularized it but the difference being with them they would comment on something in the world or have a short conversation which was tied to a time & place and they would play out doing/ looking at whatever they are speaking about, it had context to it.
I do actually like this dynamic between two characters because it does actually feel like the characters are thinking and speaking to you.
Sadly someone thought "hey maybe it would be cool if they gave hints"
And with most other 3rd party games it just feels like they are randomly talking while you are playing just for the sake of it.

Remember when hours would go by in the original Tomb Raider, with not a fucking word said, letting the atmosphere and environmental storytelling do all the heavy lifting?

Yeah. Good times.

Everything gets easier and automatic.

When I was younger I remember being stuck on Zelda for 3 weeks, Tomb Raider for a couple weeks.

No internet and no one to ask. You either figured it out or didn't.

Look at David Jaffe's rant about being stuck in Metroid Dread. He's not alone on thinking like that, a whole generation of developers has been schooled to think a game is badly designed if you have to think and experiment to progress further into the game, and since dialogue boxes popping up to explain things are annoying they now do the explaining with side characters instead.
The companion talk ruined Ragnarök for me, at first I thought it was just a tutorial but they kept going throughout the whole game.

There are exceptions though. Elden Ring, Scorn, Tunic. 👌

If its done well it can really add to the character and story, like both Nier Replicant and Automata. The conversation between Kaine and Weiss was golden, same with conversations between 2B and her operator 6O and 9S and his operator 21O, which really hits you that much harder in Route C.

I even loved between A2 and Pod 042.

Uncharted / The Last of Us justify chatty companions. Thats how those games keep you engaged.

Else their gameworld is so non interactive there isn't anything to do in them.

Forspoken, with it's traversal and open world mechanics shouldn't need them.

Personally I like to take this on case by case basis. It works in some games, doesn't in others.

When I play games, I shut down the let's solve puzzles part of my brain (I swear my iq drops by 90%) so I appreciate the hints from the sidekick. Though I got stuck once in ragnorok and so i thought ill go to the new bragged about ps5 hint system, and there was nothing there..

there wasn't even any background music - just weird environmental/ambient sound. so genuinely visionary compared to what we've ended up with today...

Maybe I am getting older but new/newer games don't do anything for me and one of the reasons is this.
I can agree with most here, hated the chatty companions even in Dragons Dogma, even if it's a great game.

The puzzles in Ragnarok were infuriating because they were really piss easy, no solutions needed yet they obliged.

I hate ND design so to me, Uncharted, Tlou still does not exist

Single player games without any SaaS elements are very expensive to make and pose a high risk as an investment. They need to address the common denominator in every single person owning a console, which of course will always result in pure garbage because the common denominator of billions of people all over the world is basically nothing. Then you add market "research" (which gives real research a bad name) to "enhance" your product with whatever braindead marketing people deem hip to young people at the time and your result is something like Forspoken. Ironically, SaaS/F2P are a good bet if you want to find something that's not infested with this shit. Of course most of them are, too.

It's one to ask for a hint (or turn on/off the option)….it's just that the chatty sidekick never shuts the eff up. Let me play the game alone. God of war Ragnark was terrible about this…. Start to Finish.

I agree to an extent but it's also not that hard to just avoid and not play those kind of games. I generally avoid all games with loads of banter these days.

Another one? Really?!
The dialogue is fine. They don't since puzzles for you. It's just banter that you can turn down.
It's a light hearted game. Loosen up a bit jeez.
Nobody likes it at all I have no idea what market it's aimed at
Wear do you mean nobody likes it?! Uncharted wouldn't be the same if not for this. It adds duke character. You are not playing as a slate in an rpg. You are playing as a character in an action game.

Should John McClain shut up in due hard?!
Should guardians of the galaxy be silent?!

Hints are one thing. Character is another

This bothered me quite a bit in GotG. I know they're supposed to be chatty, and the dialogue was generally pretty good, but it was just too damn much. Can I just play the game please?
