What benefits do you get?

$30 gift certificate for signing up.

For every 2500 points, $25 gift certificate.

3 points for every dollar spent at Amazon.

1 point for every dollar spent elsewhere.

I'm considering signing up for the TRU one, because the benefits come pretty easily, plus I work there, so I can use the coupons with my discount for more the cheapened gaming. I've just never had a CC before, so I have no idea about anything.

Just pay on time, and get one without an annual fee, and you'll be fine.

This'll be my third credit card. I kept getting denied for the Amazon one, but the fact that I've religiously paid my CapitalOne credit card before they've even sent me statements probably tipped credit in my favor.

American Express also keeps sending me letters for a pre-approved gold card, but I don't want one.

Well it has no annual fees, and I'm not a mad spender so I think I'll give it a shot. Worst thing that happens is I get denied, eh?

American Express has a yearly fee of ~$55 for their old school "green" card. Blue might not have one, but I'm not sure if it comes with the same benefits as the other. I know one difference is that Blue allows you to pay over time, the others don't.

Yeah, I don't want an American Express because of the fee.

But also, I don't think they just send those to anyone, and with my Amazon VISA approval today, I think my credit is in good shape so far, especially for being 20.

Even applying for a credit card has a negative effect on your credit rating.

Don't apply unless you're relatively sure that you'll get in.

Seriously? Well how the hell would I be relatively sure I'd get in? I've never had a card before, and I'm not exactly familiar with what else builds your credit.

I started with an offer for a student CapitalOne VISA. Then the ball rolled because I kept paying it before they gave me statements.

If you've never been offered a student credit card, or are no longer in school, I'm not sure what you're supposed to do.

You can't, just don't go on an application spree. Only go for 3-4 every six months if you can help it. The fewer applications, the better.

Amex blue doesn't have a yearly fee. Mine came with a 14-month interest free period, transfer balance free up to 1k and free enrollment into their miles program. Pretty friggin nice card in my opinion.

Just be on good terms with your bank. Carry a balance in both your savings and checking accounts. Stay on good terms with them. Don't bounce checks or miss any bill payments. Then, go through your bank with one of their credit card offers. That's how I started my credit with BofA. After that, it just build from there.

If you have a job, you should be able to get a standard Visa card from someplace.

If you are a first-time applicant, I suppose you gotta start somewhere. Though finding a company that offers a student Visa would probably get you better chances.

You might wanna figure out if you woud really spend $2500 that frequently, if it is worth it to get the gift certificates. First-time cardholders might get a limit so low that it's difficult to really rack up the points.

Just for reference, I don't think it makes a damned bit of difference if you pay your bills before the statement comes or after it comes. Credit scores don't take that into account -- they only care about late payments.

It works out to 1% off all purchases, 3% off all Amazon purchases, 8% off all Amazon purchases with my Associates account, and 18% all Amazon purchases with my Associates account and Share the Love discounts.

I applied for a student visa and my mom was going to handle all the paying/paperwork anyways. But they still rejected me. It just gets tiring to pay for clothes or textbooks with cash.

Blue Cash has no annual fee, but doesn't have all the benefits of the green card. I heard that they are actually run by a third party, and branded American Express, but I'm not sure if that's the case or not.

Either way, I'll take the small amount of cash back from them instead of the nothing I was getting from my Visa.

Well those are discounts that you would be getting with or without the card, right? That would make them kind of irrelevant if you are calculating the usefulness of the card.

1% off regular purchases, 3% off Amazon purchases seems kinda meh, but then again I'm not really getting shit from my credit card now. Do they mail you gift certificates or do you just get rebate codes at your e-mail address?

Fine, the 8% and 18% are due to extra, non-card goodies, but 1% and 3% are still fine by me. As for the gift certificates, they E-Mail them.

I think I'll probably just wait for the DeepDiscountDVD Visa ;)

DeepDiscount has been slipping lately on prices.

Not to mention, when the difference is only a quarter or so, I'd rather go with Amazon because of the A+ customer service.

the real nice thing about American Express is no pre-set spending limit. Other than that, you can get better deals on other cards. But if you spend a lot of money on things like business, it's great.

Actually, I like 'em because of the warranty extensions, plus the Indians they hired treat me better than the ones Fleet hired.
