I got ass-rammed by a GMC pickup truck today

So, I made a trip to the big metropolis of London Ontario today to do my G2 exit driver's test. I had failed the first two times (damn governmental money-grab). Well, I passed. But on the drive home (and my dad was driving now), we came to a stop light on the overpass.

Suddenly, my dad yells out "Holy shit!" and a half-second later, a GMC pickup truck smashes into the rear end of our car going at least 60 kilometres an hour. The car was totalled, I banged my shin on the dash board, but otherwise I was fine.

So the fatass in the truck gets out, and it turns out he was checking the messages on his cell phone, and just plain wasn't paying attention as he flew over the hill.

Now, the kicker is, we couldn't get the police out. We called 911 and the operator said that unless there's an injury, the police don't need to be called. So Fatass simply gives us his info, then takes off. We were driven to the reporting centre and spent a couple hours there.

So, although this jackass will end up taking it up the ass in insurance costs, he can't be charged with reckless driving or anything.

It's just not fair that he can ass-ram us at 60 kilometres per hour with a pickup truck and get off free, but I'd go to jail if I had've punched him in the face :p

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
If I may use a little GAF slang, you should've totally pushed that guy's magazine rack over.

Another reason why the US > Canada ;) -- the police would DEFINITELY have been dispatched for an accident like that.

Hawt.

But seriously, you should have called the cops anyway and claimed injury. Play up the shin or something. Guys like that truck driver don't deserve to be on the roads.

asking dangerous questions
In Alberta at least, Police should be called anytime the damage is over $1000.
Glad that you and your dad are alright though - that sounded painful.

Something similar happened to me. I live in the DC area and I was coming back from Tyson's Corner. I was stopped at a red light when this old lady rammed into the back of my car. I get out of my car, and two girls in front of me both offer to be witnesses. So I talk to them for a few seconds and then as we are walking back to talk to the old lady, she reverses a bit and then peels out (almost hitting me) and drives off. Luckily we got her license plate and the police found her after a few days. It was a big pain in the ass to get the police to do anything. The accident occured on the border between two counties in Virginia and they couldn't agree who had jurisdiction over it.

This is one reason why I have a camera phone. Take a few snapshots of her car, her face, her license plate, the accident scene, and she'd be much less likely to think she can get away.

Actually, i'm not sure if this differs in Ontario, but a friend of mine who rear ended some lady got an AUTOMATIC reckless Driving ticket to the tune of 550$. This is in Edmonton, AB.

The cop told him that any time you rear end someone you get a reckless driving charge because you should always be paying enough attention to the road to be able to stop before rear ending someone.

He's fighting it and has a court date four months from now, largely because I think that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard (I was in the car with him, and he was doing nothing reckless. He had plenty of time to stop, he just panicked when the lady hit her breaks and didn't respond in time.

We called the police, and couldn't get them to do anything about. They said, flat out "we will not do anything about this. Call a tow truck, and go to the reporting centre."

A passing officer stopped by and gave us a ride to the reporting centre, but said they don't investigate accidents without injuries because the insurance companies want it that way.

So apparently, the interests of insurance companies trump the interests of the safety of the community. Fucking wonderful.

No I had an accident just like that and the police wouldn't come out. I sat in the cold rain asking several people who stopped to see if they could help, if I could use their phone and the cops never came. They said the same thing. Unless someone is hurt then they are not coming out. After I called back and told them that their was someone hurt, there wasn't, but still no one came out.
