I got caught in a head-on car crash last week but came out unscathed

So, I just want to tell this story. A couple of days ago, I stayed at a friend's house and later that night she drove me home since I don't have my license yet. It was a fifteen minute drive anyway and we were talking about all the years we've known each other and all the stuff we did together. Halfway through we approached an intersection and drove straight ahead at around 65 kmh (40 mph) since we had the green light. Suddenly we notice a car from the opposite direction making a move to turn left and cutting the corner they are supposed to take. We hit the brake but somewhere I realized we would never stop in time and felt that we still had a huge speed going. At that moment thousands of things went through my mind at the same time but the biggest question was: how will we come out of this? Then it was just a loud bang, a flight forward, an airbag to the face and in less than second you're standing still only hearing a ringing noise and feeling as if time froze. I was so glad that I was still concious, noticed that I didn't have visible injuries, looked to my left to see that my friend was fine and looked ahead to see the other car being fine too.

I got out of the car in a daze to look up the damage and noticed the car were presumably to be declared total loss, although the opposing car looked less damaged. When meeting the other passengers, I noticed they were drunk as hell and a bit of a hassle to arrange things with so we called the police to be sure that the opposing driver was not under influence too. We called our parents, took some pictures, pushed the car into safety and filled in the paperwork. Both drivers were proven to be sober and the other guys were helpful after all, and they drove off as soon as they were able to. Damage to our car was considerable though, four deployed airbags, cracked windshield, broken glove box, A/C circuit totally smashed, the hood and front bumper deformed, and maybe more invisible damage so it will likely get marked as total loss.

I had the scare of my life, but looking back we were all very lucky and I'm glad nobody got hurt except that I had some back pain that the doctor said would be fine. And to this day, the pain has mostly disappeared. We were driving a Volvo V40 though, which scores quite good on safety measures and is somewhat of a tank disguised as a normal car. I wonder what would have happened if we took the other car. Apparantly that morning two people collided at the same intersection and had to be taken to the hospital, and there have been regular accidents at the same intersection so I hope they do something to improve its safety.

Anyone else ever been involved in a moderate to serious car crash? Did you have any major injuries afterwards and was it hard to cope with the aftermath? The sheer prevelance of traffic accidents is a very sad side-effect of our increased mobility and I wish we could reduce them to absolute zero fatal incidents. Modern techniques in prevention such as electronic assist and autonomous cars and improved safety measures are helping but have a long way to go before they can completely solve the problem.

Congratulations OP, you're Unbreakable.

I was in an accident on my way to college orientation. I merged into a lane from the right and a semi merged into it from the left. Apparently he had had to speed up to get into the gap between cars and he couldn't slow down fast enough and hit me from behind, sending me spinning on the highway. THANK GOD FOR MEDIAN BARRIERS! The windhield and window both broke and I got a lot of cuts but I was otherwise okay. My mom cried when she saw the accident pictures. Very fortunate.

I spun out on some ice going 65 mph and did two full three 360s before slamming the front end straight into a tree. I think I may have lost consciousness during the impact from the airbags, because I remember My Humps starting on the radio when I began to lose control and then when it was all done it was a different track. Other than that and a bruised knee where it hit the staring wheel I walked away from it unscathed. Car was a total loss and the tow truck couldn't even remove it from the tree that night. Had to come out the next day with more equipment to pry it off.

Safety standards are such a good thing. Yet some people seek to deregulate them.

I've had two traffic accidents. One my fault when younger and didn't see the car coming at an intersection with terrible sight. The other when I went to make a left turn and the car behind me decided to overtake me at the same time. For some reason he thought I was going the other way. Anyway, was already standing still pretty much, hit me just before the driver side door which was lucky. My reaction was pretty much: "Oh, that just happened." Lucky spot though, since there were a lot of trees on the side of the road except here. Otherwise the other guy would have crashed into one in his attempt to steer clear at the last second, ending in a little grass field there.

Modern cars are pretty safe luckily if you don't get into an accident with too much speed.

As someone just coming out of a lawsuit over a serious accident, I would recommend not mentioning how you feel, phycologicially or physically in any way that could be used against you in litigation.

Even though you may think it's safe to post things like that here on gaf with relative anonymity, I can assure you that there is always a chance it can come back to bite you.

Glad everyone was ok. Vehicles are amazing sometimes in the amount of protection they offer their passengers.

I was in an accident about 4 or 5 years ago, driving down a road and an elderly lady ahead of me in the opposite lane tried to turn across my lane. The worst feeling is helpless you are as you're speeding towards this other car and you know there's no way to avoid it. I hit her and the airbag knocked me out. Came to in a ditch on the side of the road with my front end completely wrecked. Turned out the lady was old as fuck and had no business driving a car. I loved my car and had just gotten a nice stereo installed as a gift.

A few years back I was driving to work, doing about 60 on the highway, and a semi-truck changed lanes into me. It basically did the pit (pick?) maneuever on me that cops do during a high speed chase, causing my car to spin. Unfortunately, it spun me such that I ended up in front of the truck, where it t-boned directly into my driver side door. It hadn't really slowed yet. I remember a very strong moment of seeing the big ass grill coming straight at me and thinking WELP, and kind of expecting to be dead.

Somehow, the truck just kind of pushed me along for a bit, and as the truck slowed I sort of broke off of it, back into my spin. I don't really have a chance to be glad I'm not dead yet, because now I've spun back into my original lane, but I'm spinning to face backwards. We're still doing highway speed, though obviously going backwards while spinning out after getting hit by a truck, I can't tell you exactly how fast, but 2 thoughts register here: 1: Oh good, the guy behind me was paying enough attention that he's at least slowed down a bit to give me space. 2: Turn INTO the spin... wait, does that mean WITH it, or AGAINST it? That's confusing! I remember afterwards telling the cop et al that I couldn't remember which way I turned as/after that thought occurred, so I wasn't sure if I did it right, but I ended up facing forward again, with enough control of the car to direct it off the side of the highway and into some blackberry bushes without hitting anything else, which I'm pretty proud of, considering my rear axle was snapped in the collision.

Sort of sat in my passenger seat, wiggled my various muscles/joints around and patted myself down, and proceeded to be in the best fucking mood of my life for like a month straight. Like, nothing could ruin my good mood, not the trucking company's shitty insurance company, not the disgusting subhuman tow truck driver bragging about banging underage prostitutes in the Philippines, not even losing my precious Saturn with it's dope ass dent resistant side panels that I can only assume saved my life despite the fact that they didn't because that's not really how they work. I fucking played soccer THE NEXT DAY, and I feel like that messed me up more than the accident did. Though it did lead to a great interaction where someone started trying to pick a fight with me during the game and I was like "Mother fucker, I got hit by a semi truck yesterday and I'm here playing soccer like it was nothing, so if you think you can do better, try me". Dude was like "wat?" I offered to show him pictures of my car after the game, which he took me up on, and the whole situation got diffused, haha

I mean sure, when it was a serious accident involving a possible lawsuit or charges I wouldn't have posted on here too. But in this case the outcome was fine, the opposing driver agreed that she was at fault, everything was written down and the paperworks have been sent to the insurances companies. Everybody was properly insured to cover all damages, nobody wants to go to court over this.

Good to hear no one was hurt OP.

Just a few months ago I saw a nasty pile up happen on the highway. Some OU charter buses were passing by and I guess people were distracted by them, suddenly all these cars were crashing into each other I saw an SUV crash right into a van. It was pure chaos so surreal to see all those cars just pile into each other.

Glad your alright, OP.

I've only been in one wreck, got t-boned by a drunk driver on a left green in Burlington Vermont. I had the green, made my left and all of a sudden I see this green Explorer gunning at me. Suddenly there was this explosive leftwards force and a metal sound I'll never forget. Airbags went off as we did a 360 and I swear to this day video game learned skills helped me recover and instantly and safely pull up into a gas station lot.

A young couple, 14 months pregnant ran up to us and checked if we were okay. I never even saw the other driver as cops were there within minutes. I answer some questions, and my dad picks us up within 30 minutes. I go to the station a few times, speak to my insurance company and things kinda drop with no increased monthly payments. I find out that the driver had several priors and had a suspended license. Weeks later we find out that he had killed a family coming back from church in a minivan and was no on critical. All around horrible human being.

I still have that car. A 2005 Honda Element I've owned since it had 7 miles on it from the factory. I'll never sell her, uncool as she is.

Everybody who survives a car wreck should do a toast to Ralph Nader. Guy has saved millions of lives.

I wasn't wearing my seatbelt in my wreck. As the car spun around, my locked door came open and I held on to the steering wheel for dear life. I couldn't make a fist for several days after because of the muscle strain. Buckle up kids!
