I gotta say, I'm not into this whole moving away from plastic thing

I'm getting items from Amazon damaged in these paper envelopes.

When I go shopping at the grocery store, they have paper bags now, which are a bitch to carry.

Paper straws might be the worst invention in the history of planet earth.

And who the fuck knows what bullshit they're going to replace plastic bottled drinks with. Cartons are fucking trash.

Plastic didn't do anything to anybody, it's irresponsible idiots who litter it who are the problem. Don't hate the player, hate the game. Plastic is a great invention.

Nah, too much of this stuff, in Japan every individual coffee stirrer is in its own plastic wrapper.. it's fucked up. It's not just a question of irresponsible disposal, it's a question of toxicity in both the production and destruction of it, and its propensity to never break down even once it becomes invisible to us.. no see =/= no problem

Ps. I like George Carlin, I've probably seen this bit before, can't remember and can't watch now but i imagine he's taking aim at double standards and fad followers rather than the actual goal of reducing plastic waste

Studies show that we already eat microplastic in the size of a credit card over the course of a year. Some of it comes out and some of it doesn't.

Not to mention how hard we already fucked up this planet just with plastic. It may has its places in the industry but we went overboard with that in combination of consumables.

Plastic needs to go away immediately! Sorry but your opinion is stupid.

There’s lots of research going into replacements, and there’s good business incentive because there’s lots of money to be made if you can be the first to make a plant based alternative. IIRC it’s mushrooms that make a supposedly good replacement for traditional leather. I hope it has the same properties.

As for straws, I’m not in a situation where I need a straw very often. What are you having so often that it’s a problem? I think I’ve used about 4 paper straws since they came into effect, and they aren’t the best but I’ve done just fine. Even with those though, if there’s a viable replacement it’ll catch on like wildfire.

you’re an idiot.

plastic never done any harm to anyone? we now have babies being born with plastic already inside them but yeah sure blame the people who litter the streets.

I don’t know where the hell you are but I’ve never had a problem with Amazon materials. 99% of the time they come in boxes. if not then it’s a bag which protects the item well. Usually if I order clothes or something that has its own box it will be in a bag.

paper straws are single use so what does it matter? It holds together long enough to drink. it’s meant to break down because plastic doesn’t. if you are at home you should be using a metal straw.

when shopping you don’t need to use their bags. bring your own reusable bag.

i don’t know about plastic bottles but here’s an idea…take some responsibility. buy a reusable bottle if you drink water. if you buy coke cola or some shit then recycle your bottles.

if you think there is nothing wrong with plastic then you’re an ignorant idiot. it’s harming us, animals, and the environment. it’s a great material but there is far too many single use items, far too much plastic in our clothes, and a lot of plastics are difficult to recycle. We need to try cut our use of it down A LOT and make it more environmentally friendly.

Try a paper straw or get a broken game case from Amazon in a paper envelope and you'll be bowing down to the plastic god. Trust me, it's worth destroying the planet over.

Look at it this way. We'll be long gone by the time earth is destroyed, and when our future generations are living in their post apocalyptic world wondering why their can't cups last like a day because they're all made if dissolvable material, and they have nothing to store their valuables with; they're going to discover these special items buried deep within the earth and they're going to be like holy shit what is this stuff, it works amazing and never breaks down, and they're going to go digging the earth for it like gold, and when they unearth this amazing stuff called plastic, they're going to use it for everything. To store their burlap sacks and cooking utensils in centuries old Sterilite containers, keeping dirt and all kinds of nasty stuff. And they will worship this stuff and name a deity over it. I guarantee you. Ancient civilizations worshipped a lot weirder stuff than plastic.

How ignorant can one human being be?

If humanity keeps going like this with the uncontroled harvest of the planet and the polution it inherents combined with an ever growing thirst for this plastic shit and other things it will even affect yourself quite soon. How much of a misanthrope do you have to be to not care a single bit for others and future generations. It's people like you that hold back a positive progress in that matter to a great extent.

Your opinion is incredibly flawed!

I haven’t used a straw to drink anything in such a long time, I can’t even remember the last time.
The problem is, we use tons of plastic to solve problems we ourselves made up to begin with.
When fresh food comes wrapped in more plastic than its own weight just so that it has a price tag o the envelope, that’s when you know all the talk about reducing plastic is bs. We could use tons less plastic starting yesterday. I’ve been refilling the same 12 plastic bottles for three years for my drinking water. Virtually all the plastic I throw away for recycling comes from packaging, and most of it could be replaced by paper.

Yeah, plastic is a nice thing but it seems we kind of are beyond that option If we want this planet to hold on just a little longer.

We don't need to rid ourselves of plastic, we need to dispose of it properly. And the "we" here are mostly people in the developing world.

Paper instead of plastic is one of those things that middle class liberals in the west pat themselves on the back over, but anyone who's looked into it knows that the environmental impact of a paper container is much larger across the entire production and disposal chain.

Recycling and proper disposal is important also, the key part is not making more. People can adjust to paper packaging and the main aim is minimise waste overall.

The versatile, cheap and useful nature mean it is difficult to replace certain products. Paper straws is a feel good exercise for the most part. These same people won't be able to tell your what their own carbon footprint is.

Companies should have been told decades ago to reduce production and use of plastic otherwise face taxes and fines. Governments have the power to enforce this. It's picking up traction now because it's talked about more and companies can profit from being green and sustainable.

Other than plastic straws, many of us have lived with non-plastic versions of the things you're having a whinge about.

Paper bags? Pfft. Once upon a time, that was actually the superior option. More capacity, and you could use the paper for a variety of things, like covering school textbooks (raise your hand if you had to do that as a kid).

Cartons for drinks? Juice and milk still come in cartons. It's a complete non-issue.

Paper straws do indeed suck, but give them time to iterate on the design. They'll eventually come up with something that works. It's not like we need to reuse straws, so all they have to do is last for one drink. If you absolutely need straws for everything, then invest in a metal one. Far superior to the plastic straws.

Personally, my biggest complaint has been that shops like 7-11 briefly stopped carrying plastic bags for a few months last year. As a result, we had to bring our own bags when getting groceries and stuff like that. It took a little getting used to at first, as I always forgot the bag in my motorcycle, or at home. However, you get accustomed to it eventually. They recently started carrying plastic bags again at most shops, but only if you don't have your own bag, and for a small price (like $0.50 USD equivalent).

They removed plastic seals on bottles and other items, and I hardly noticed it. It's been a couple of years without them, and I don't miss them at all. Times they are a changing. Cutting down on plastics is a good thing. That paper straws are the main thing people moan about serves only to point out how seamlessly this transition can be made. If that is the biggest gripe, then there's no reason not to make the change. Buy a fucking sippy cup, if it's such a big deal.

I never understood using straws. It's the whole fast food modelthat is the problem, no reusing ustensils, cups, plates etc. Drive-thru's should be banned as well.

To add to OPs list of inconveniences my country raised taxes on plastic bags significantly, and as a result we got those brown paper bags instead of thin plastic ones at the grocery store. So now when you buy vegetables the cashier has to open each and every bag 🤡

By the way, those cotton bags people use have to be used hundreds of times to offset the environmental impact of plastic bags.

I'm setting up a new fast food model. It's self service, open plan, no seats, no utensils. You get a trough of burgers and fries and a pool of cola. Hose down after eating for an additional dollar. Chicken in a wheelbarrow, will call it Charrows (TM). 🐔🍔🥤🍟🍕

We can certainly reduce amount of plastics but fuck paper straws.
And all of this reducing is for nothing if asia and everyone else dont give a fuck anyway.
In fact, It's not a personal responsibility

OP is giving off some serious small PP energy.

The irony is lost on him of course, if he bothered to pay attention to Carlin’s body of work, that he’s literally the type of guy that Carlin would make fun of. Lazy, entitled, selfish American. Dude can’t even drink without a plastic straw lmao.

take the lid off and use your mouth instead of fellating a limp paper straw

Isn't this some virtue signaling fashion thing? We live on a planet as a species that could reach unfathomable levels of quality of life but instead we have corrupted leaders, wars, deaths and so forth. Plastic may not be our primary concern here.

Now that I think of it what i just said might as well be in a Carlin bit i reckon. He recognized Clown World way back

Fuck paper straws. Here in DC they adopted them, and they fall apart immediately. Ever try to drink a shake out of a paper straw? Fucking stupid. Even worse when you have small children drinking out of them.

That being said, I've seen some business move to some type of biodegradable plastic (type) straws that seem to hold up really well, and those were fine, I had no issues with those.

The papar straws I have used did not hold up long enough for me to finish my drink. I'm done with straws now. I suspect a significant number of people would poison themselves by not cleaning out the metal straws well enough and either mold or fungus would grow inside them.

Personally I would like glass bottles or aluminum cans for everything instead of plastic bottles. I hate the paper straws, but if plastic bottles were banned I would not care.
