Okay, usually I am the first to try out any new google app, but GT is not really tickling my fancy. While the interface is nice and uncluttered, wtf is up with asking me whether I want to uninstall gmail notifier, and then having back asswards mail notfication system? There's no way of telling by looking at the icon on the taskbar whether you have new mail or not. You have to move your cursor on the icon and wait for the baloon to tell you whether you have new mail. And then, when you click on 'inbox', it does nothing, and I don't even see an option in the preferences to set a default browser. On top that, the voice conversations don't seem to work.

So far, Google Talk = Piece of Shit.

I don't think wumpus.game qualifies GTalk as a game. :P

But since we're on the subject, Yeah, the Google Talk Mail Notification could be fixed with one simple step.

1. Blank White Bubble With Black Outline = No New Messages, no new Emails
2. Blank White Bubble With Thick Blue Outline = No New Messages, New Emails
3. White Bubble with Black Text Inside of it With Black Outline = New Messages, No Email
4. White Bubble with Blue Text inside of it With Blue Outline = New Messages and New Email

What does Beta mean again ?

Anyone ?

...
Exactly. While many of Google's betas are excellent products that some other companies would release and fix later, some actually have some noticeable rough edges. For instance, i was reading about how the first version of Google Desktop commandeered a side of the screen when used in sidebar mode, something that was fixed later on.

I'd say that Google Talk needs some more work but yeah, it's beta so I'm not complaining too much. :P Haven't yet tried out the whole voice feature though.

Voice works pretty damn well, sucks that there's no conference option yet, but the voice works just fine for me. Even with BitComet running for my uh...Diggnation and TWIT downloads, there was not much if any lag on the conversation. It's great

Uh... so?
So they've been working on Google Talk the same amount of time, but just never told us. Duh.

The point being, the word 'beta' does not necessarily have the same signifance at Google that it might at some other companies.

does google provide anything outside of their websearch that is anything other than "beta"? I feel like the corporation uses it as an excuse more than anything to dismiss features of their product being missing / unused.

Hell, didn't MS do the same thing recently with their latest version of Server? Looks like Google's set a new trend in the IT industry :lol

I love GoogleTalk.

Clean, subtle, simple, practical >>> AIM/MSN.

Yeah, that is definitely a MAJOR improvement, especially over the hideous MSN Messenger.

It's funny GoogleTalk remind me of ICQ... waaaay back before all the additional features... small download, small footprint, chat and be done... now everybody wants their IM package to do everything so they've thrown everything in to them..... and now look at em... bloated, some with confusing interfaces, etc....

GoogleTalk is a return to the beginning... it IM's and Voice's well... while it could use some more work in the emoticon area I for one hope it doesn't grow up too much more.

I think they're working on what matters most, functionality. All the UI fixes will come in time. I like it a lot, even though I only have Miguel as a user. :lol

I wonder why they didnt integrate talk with hello, the im service from the guys at picasa. It was a great way of sharing photos.

Probably a case where multiple development teams don't talk to each other. Google's a huge operation now.

"wtf is up with asking me whether I want to uninstall gmail notifier"
Wow you idiot, just hit fing no and you're problem is solved. ITS NOT A BIG DEAL.

I don't see google talk taking off. AIM seems to be the instant messenger champ. The only way I can see another IM service becoming just as or more popular than AIM is if AIM starts charging people for use.

Whatever, both Gmail and Google news have been 'Beta' for well over a year.
And Linux apps are frequently in beta, sometimes even alpha, and damn stable most of the time. Linux geeks are perfectionists and masochists.
