I have my first colonoscopy Thursday.

Any words of advice?

Should I have someone rub cocoa butter on the area to loosen it up?

What should I expect before, during and after?

Ulcerative Colitis here. Very simple procedure and honestly the worst part is the drink they give you before that cleans you out. Plus the whole not eating for 24 hours before isn’t all that fun either.

At most is mild discomfort during and shortly after the procedure. Depends on if you have any major inflammation in that region.

Opt for sedation. I didn't (Twice lol) and regretted it.

However the pain is different for each person. One person won't feel much, yet anther would be in absolute agony (Like me).

They just have me downing 64oz of Gatorade mixed with Miralax and 4 tabs of Dulcolax.

That's it? Usually you're also downing a huge jug of yuck juice. Weird.

Anyway the drugs you get are worth it. You will be floating on a cloud during the procedure if you can stay semi-awake.

use this to stretch it out before hand. Leave it in there for a funny surprise for them.

in all seriousness it’s fine and actually easy. I’ve had them awake which is a nightmare but when that sedation hits, prepare for amazing sleep.

Prep sucks but can’t avoid that.

I’ve had to go through the drink and cleanse routine twice so far for colonoscopy and endoscopy. The prep was honestly worse than the procedure itself. Absolutely hated sitting on the toilet multiple times within a span of a few hours as a torrent of liquid comes gushing out. And the lengthy cleanup afterwards.

I barely felt anything during the colonoscopy. Just laid on my side staring at the monitor and listening to the workers gossip and chitchat.

Lucky. They have had me drinking a viscous mixed concoction of lemon flavored hell. 1 cup every 15 to 45 min.

I made a drinking game out of that stuff. Play Smash Bros., whether you win or lose you take a drink. That was a year or so ago and I haven’t played Smash Bros. since. I wonder if the two are related. 🤔

You can shoot the doctor, just not with a firearm.
Can you actually ejaculate during?

I’m getting put under. Are you able to dress yourself after? My MiL is my driver and I don’t want her having to fool with this mess.

Get someone to shave you beforehand. When you look at the pictures later, you want as clear a picture as possible. Clean the poo off too.

They will knock you out if it's a full colonoscopy, so nothing to be nervous about. Just go off to sleep and dream about having something long and slippery shoved in your butt.

It’s not as bad as it sounds. Had one without sedation a few years ago and had no pain or discomfort at all. Was very nervous about it as I have extreme high anxiety especially at doctors, but it wasn’t a problem at all. The worst part was the drink I had to clean out my intestines that morning. Also the amount of gas after words. The most important thing is to have a doctor who is well experienced in the procedure, as that will eliminate a lot of the issues. Also it was quite weird and interesting to be able to watch the camera feed on the tv that had setup while it was happening.

now the opposite for me is the upper endoscopy I’ve had to do twice. Once with a light sedative to relax me and once without one. That’s not fun at all.

My co worker had it. He said the worst part was not being able to eat and having to drink whatever they give u which makes u use the bathroom a lot. The procedure itself is simple and he was back at work the next day. Good luck man.

Thank goodness they now have camera pill endoscopy. I just had wear a light machine for 8 hours and then returned it at the end of the day. The camera pill then gets flushed out with your waste after a bowel movement.

yeah I had a friend who did that. Said the pill was huge. Not sure if I could swallow one the size he claimed it was. Just wish that doctors in Japan did more of the procedures with sedation. I understand why they don’t but darn it’s tough to do. Hope I don’t have to do another one anytime soon.

Why don’t the Japanese sedate?

When people say sedation do they mean totally out cold? Or the kind where you are just semi-concious but not very lucid? Hope all is well, OP!

I asked my doctor the same question actually after my colonoscopy (he did my upper endoscopy too) and he said it’s just the way it’s done here. Also it keeps costs down. The costs of both procedures in Japan are so cheap compared to say america that it’s literally unbelievable. He mentioned particularly that the insurance companies back in the states make the prices so high for those procedures and adding sedation makes it worse.

They did give me a medicine to calm me down a little when I had a panic attack during my first upper endoscopy but I was completely aware awake and feeling during the whole procedure. It’s weird doing it awake but that doctor was very good at the procedure and that helped. However the second time I did it I had another doctor do it and no extra medicine like its usually done here and it was harder. Strangely the colonoscopy awake wasn’t a problem at all. Also surprisingly it went by pretty quickly.

Kinda glad my GI doctor didn't feel the need to do this when I was diagnosed with IBS. Was told to add fiber supplements, drink more water, and exercise. The problem cleared up but then I got lazy and now it's back. Getting older is a son of a bitch.

Do they use a long tentacle with a camera on the end?

Maybe your doctor just didn’t want to scrounge around in your filthy asshole.

There are two ways.

There is conscious sedation which is basically large dose of benzo + some opiate (plus heart monitor so that you don't OD and die by accident). It is OK but you feel kinda drugged when you wake up.
Also some people supposedly can wake up during it.

Then there is good stuff - propofol (the stuff that Michael Jackson died from). It's like a switch - lights out, then the stop the drip, lights on. No hangover, etc. More expensive so not all places have it and not all insurances want to pay for it.

I’ll be completely out.

What time is it?
Prep is worse than the procedure. I forgot the clear liquid they prescribed last time to mix with water but it was nasty. My first go around was just with diacritics and Gatorade which was still awful. After choking all that drink down you get to go to the bathroom dozens of times before you eventually just starting peeing out your butt. Hopefully the anesthesia knocks you out or you'll be watching one of the worst tv shows ever produced.

Had my second one last month. The issue is the prep the day before. Liquid diet and peeing from your butthole gets old fast. Especially when, you know, hemorrhoids.

yes it’s the same procedure as everywhere else. Same prep too. Honestly seeing that can be scary as you will be like “they are going to put that inside of me down there!?!?!?!” But it really wasn’t bad at all. Felt no pain or discomfort. Just a lot of gas afterwords.

it’s similar with the upper endoscopy, they stick a camera tube down your throat (or nose now too which many say is much easier). They spray your throat with a spray that numbs it to help you not try to gag and push it out as your body would want you too. Once it’s down into the stomach things get better quickly.

I will say, it can be scary to think about but getting both of things things done is good as they can quickly check and eliminate any possible problems. When I had my results instantly since I didn’t need a biopsy as both areas looked completely healthy, that was great to hear.

I always heard that is one of the most painfull and invasive exam, maybe people with a very low pain tolerance?!

Seriously? I didn't realize this is supposed to hurt. What age are you supposed to start getting these?
