I heard yesterday that in some places they never take off their shoes, even inside

Someone told me yesterday that in some places in southern Europe, they use shoes inside?

What is this? Anyone here got experience with this?

When I was growing up, we always wore shoes inside. Now that I'm an adult, I usually take them off when I get home from work - with the caveat that I give myself permission to wear them inside if I know I'm immediately going back out (to the store or something).

But I still wear socks at home, I'm not a savage

Europeans do few things right, this is not one of those if true why would you go and drag all the shit from the bottom of your shoes throughout the house. Also home time is supposed to be relaxation time which means wearing the bare least, no shoes.

My house is old with lots of doors. Occasionally the nails come up from the floor, but it also doesn't help when you live with a woman who puts things where you need to walk. If I didn't wear shoes I'd probably make some steel toe slippers

There's shit on the ground outside. It gets on your shoes. Don't bring that shit inside. Even I'm not that filthy and I'm a talking hamster who eats her children.

This requires an explanation, why not remove or fix the nails? What do you mean by her placing things where you walk?

Because of the age of the house and where it's located, things regularly shift. Also from walking on the wood floors. It would not matter if I replaced the nails, actually it would make it worse because I'd just be making bigger holes. I nail them back down. By items in the way, well....just as I said. Tables, chairs, shit on the stairs. You can still walk fine and the place isn't a pigsty, but it's likely you'll stub your toe. No thanks. I do have slippers, but with that and depending on the day of chores, I just leave my shoes on

it's not just southern europe... even in Germany it's different from area to area 🤷 and also slowly changing towards shoes off it seems.

but when I was a kid almost noone took their shoes off when going inside. it was maybe 1 in 10 households that asked you to take your shoes off.

Not this thread again apparently people are incapable of not walking through pools of blood, piss, shit and all manner of biohazardous material . That's why you mop the floors every day and Americans shower on avg 5 times a week 🤢 but shoes in the house!

The first thing I do when I come home is kiss your mother

And after that I take off my shoes

White folks in USA wear shoes inside. It always weirds me out. I can't stand wearing shoes inside unless I know i'm going right back out.

You always see this on TV as it makes sense to not show celebs feet and itd be weird if they always had to spend time putting on or taking off shoes.

But anyone who wears shoes inside must be ultra niche. I've never in my whole live ever known someone who wears shoes inside. At least not in Canada. Even handymen who have visited my house to fix something take off their boots. Although sometimes they leave them on but put on plastic protector things to the sole to not track anything indoors. And most people dont wear slippers either. Some people do (you walk in their house and they got like 8 pairs of slippers in the lobby), but most people just go barefoot or walk around in socks at other people's homes.

For those who do wear shoes inside, I wonder what they do when they've walked in rain, snow or dusty roads. They leave it on too? What's the cut off point shoes on and shoes off? Are shoes ok on the couch and bed too?

depends. Usually I like to walk around indoors in socks or bare feet. But mostly I wear sandals or slippers as I'm getting old just feels more comfy

But yes if I'm going out later when I come back I will keep my shoes on. So long as they are not covered in shit.
We have this invention called door mats to wipe our feet.

I wouldn't on carpet but 'clean' shoes on hard flooring is not a big deal. Obviously if you've just been wading through a swamp or something then no.

People have cats and dogs in their house and they're 1000x worse than shoes.

That's why people use slippers, they are still shoes but way more comfy and they are not considered outside shoes.

In other people home always shoes on.

People being barefoot or with just socks in other people houses is an alien concept here in italy\sicily.
The only expection is if it is a boys night with alcohol, vg, drugs and people sleeping on the floor, in that case, SOME people are gonna take their shoes off but not their fucking socks.

I mean they are your feet, they are designed to walk on the ground. You guys have pets right? Indoor cats I can kinda understand (I mean they will still track litter everywhere) but if you have a dog are you gonna put little booties on its paws? How is that working out for everyone?

I will take my shoes off in my home just because it's more comfortable, but I will sometimes wear my sandals - get this - OUTSIDE. Like the filthy disgusting animal that I am. Sometimes I will even wear them to, gasp, the store.

I wear slippers/sandals inside because my arches are collapsing and walking barefoot on hard floors is akin to walking on broken glass for me.
Also, I live in the Floridian Hellswamps where humidity and stanky feet reign supreme, most people down here keep em on for that reason alone.

We wore shoes inside when I was a kid no one told me differently. But since I got married my wife wouldn't allow it and it's preferable for me now when I see shoes inside I feel strange.

My parents didn't mention one way or another about it growing up. As an adult myself now, I have regular shoes that I wear outside then slippers/slides that I wear exclusively inside for walking around the house.
Also, I now prefer hardwood floors to carpet because it's easier to clean, looks better, and retains less nastiness.

I would never be strict about it though, because I had a dog, and will have a dog again, so it's not like a hard rule that I make everybody adhere to.

I hate it when people on shows/movies have their shoes on in bedrooms, and even on the bed because you know ppl do that shit for real and it's disgusting 🤢

I tend to not use shoes inside, but recently I changed the the rule to night and day section of the house, so in the day part is not a big deal (even if I usually have slippers) on the night side it is no shoes zone.

I grew up wearing shoes inside, and I wear shoes inside my own house. It feels weird not to.

Maybe it's because I live in a rural area, but my shoes aren't tracking a lot of dirt and filth into the house. Granted, the shoes I use for working in the yard and mowing the lawn are filthy and aren't worn in the house, but my everyday shoes are fine.

I never liked the idea of wearing shoes in the house, its dirty. However if i needed to run in and grab something i would do it quick...also i never had my own place until now. After 3 years so far of living in japan, i cant imagine ever wearing shoes in the house, even if i forget something on my way to work, ill remove em to walk 10 feet to grab it. Shoes are dirty outside things and the house is for cleanliness and comfort.

Even in my office, we remove shoes, its so nice and comfortable at work because of that fact alone.

I wear my shoes inside and out. If it's winter time, I swap to boot when going out. If it's raining, I come in and wipe my feet. If I step in mud, I take them off to clean. The only time I walking around in socks/barefoot depends how hot it gets. I also don't walk through every puddle of disgusting thing possible, nor do I lick the carpet.

In Italy, in the 80s, it was almost alien to visit someone who'd ask you to remove your shoes inside. I wore shoes inside all the time, except if I'd been outside in the rain or mud. Slippers were for old people, since the modern cheap slippers like those you find in hotels weren't generally available. And my mom would rather clean the floor than have to buy me new socks all the time, because I'd consume them too fast if I walked around shoeless. Plus, kids back then were much more active and shoes were way smellier; removing your shoes inside other people's homes was not appreciated.

Today, what with cheap slippers being a dime a dozen and women not being home cleaning all day every day, obviously people prefer to remove their shoes indoors.

Southern Europe probably has hard floors and not carpets but I'd never do it, I've slippers for winter and flip flops for summer.

We wear shoes at our office. And I will wear them into my house and take them off in my keeping room.

In America you have to wear shoes at work.

One of my best friends growing up was Vietnamese so around 9 or 10 years old I started getting into a habit of taking off my shoes whenever indoors at my parents house. I remember it annoying the fuck out of my dad :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Nowadays I've got "house shoes" which usually are a comfy pair of slip on Adidas's's

Spanish can go days without taking a shower so it's logic the norm being not taking off shoes.

If by southern europe you mean Africa then yes some people never take off their shoes, only because they don't even have shoes on their feet to take off in the first place

That's because white people walk from their house to their car, then drive their clean car to the store, then walk from car through clean store, then back to car, then back to house. Ain't no mud, dirt, trash, blood, piss, shit, vomit, hooked slime, or junky spunk anywhere white people are walking.

At least I think that is the perspective you seem to be lacking.

We (Mexicans) wear shoes too because we're not eating off the floor and we mop daily with
