I just brought KOTOR PC on impulse. How is it?

I'm one of those people who's never played KOTOR. At the time, I wasn't too fond of the Star Wars universe and thought it took place in the same timeline as the movies. Now, having realized it takes place nowhere near the timeline and uses no characters that I'm aware of, I wanted to try it out, especially since it was made by Bioware and all.

Since I don't have a Xbox, I brought the PC version. I remember hearing things about it, should I be concerned? Even though my rig is pretty good as you know, it ran FEAR like butter (minus those soft shadows of course).

Also, what kind of experience am I getting into? Is the game as good as I've heard?

It's awesome, and there are a ton of mods available for it that keep the game fresh. Good buy, even if you've already played the Xbox version.

Do you have an ATI card? Some of them have serious slowdowns in KOTOR with the newer Catalyst drivers. Take a look in Bioware`s forum and downgrade the driver if that`s the case.
Great game, not much to complain about it. The second one is a turd.

Probably as good as any version. (Hint: Not very)

I have an Nvidia card so I don't know how that affects things. Hmm, the response seems kind of muted on the game now. I recall many threads in the past about how wonderful this game was and stuff.

I personally loved the game, and I couldn't care less for Star Wars in general. Just thought it was a very well done game...ignoring the slideshow-like nature of the game on the PC I used when I first got it.

Bought it (and the sequel, together) for my PC, finally installed it about half a year ago. Played through about 60% of the first one, deleted my saves, uninstalled my game, never even considered playing the second game.

Really? I wasn't aware of kotor pc mods. Tell us more!

one of the greatest games i've ever played

congrats

Played through it 3 times, effected me so much that its impossible to go back to RPGs that dont allow as much freedom as KOTOR.

In essence, every RPG became redundent after KOTOR (for me) A curse and a blessing

Best RPG this gen

The second game, while being much less polished, was more enjoyable in my opinion. Kreia is one of the best developed characters in an RPG.

Play it all the way through. It does have faults but overall a very fun game and a plot twist on the order of the movie Sixth Sense (i.e. huge).

Tried playing it twice and never made it past the second or third planet either time. Not really a bad game, but becomes more and more of a chore intead of more and more fun as you proceed.

It's the combination of two unfortunate factors:
1.) Utter lack of satisfying exploration
2.) Garbage combat

Not even the brilliant written HK-whatever droid could save the game for me.

I'd love to be spoiled on the "twist" at the end, since I'll never play through it again. (Though I suspect I already know the twist, and if so, it wasn't exactly unexpected, IMHO.)

Sounds like an RPG to me. :D

Found it interesting at first but got bored by the 3rd-4th world like Littletokyo said. Maybe it's cause I don't like it when most of the time I'm striking up conversations instead of actually fighting

No idea about the PC version

KOTOR TWIST SPOILER
Your character is Darth Revan with amnesia.

Combat was one of the best things about it. Hope they re-introduce it in their next original RPG

Explorations... I loved exploring Dantoine, running into shit i shouldnt have seen, or need to resolve (handle it in a jedi-like manner)

Sorting out disputes between families, becomeing a lawyer, discovering secrets about contracts, murders etc

KOTOR had it all

Yeah, I love those side-quests. That's one of the biggest problems with Jade Empire. I mean, in general it needed to be longer, but I especially missed solving conflicts like that.

Great game. If you have a solid PC, the PC version looks/runs alot better than the xbox version.

edit: Also, dont be discouraged by the first planet. It can be rather boring, just stick it out and force your way through it, and then you'll get to the really good stuff.

You know, I've never understood threads like this. You've already bought the game, now go play the damn thing!

And yes, KOTOR is phenomenal.

Well, with the PC version you have to go through the install process which can take time and stuff. Plus I'm playing through Metroid Prime at the moment and don't want to get distracted too much. :)

Go get distracted. :)

Not that MP isn't good on its own either though.

Predictable and cliched story. Uber annoying characters. Second worst loading you've ever seen in any game (Jade Empire taking the prize). Buggy. Completely juvenile "good or evil" system, bested completely and totally by the original Ogre Battle. Not very lengthy. Basically, it is a dumbed down attempt at a console D&D RPG. It doesn't work very well.

Don't drink the Kool-Aid.
