I just got a HDTV

Before the videophiles toture me I must say that it was a gift so I cannot complain. I know nothing about whats hot and whats not in video electronics so can you guys tell me how good of a TV I got? Im curious because I'll have my 360 next week and the timing couldn't be perfect. I checked the back of it and I didn't see the HMI port that I've heard you guys mention here and there.

Here's a link to the TV I got.

I'm not familiar with the set, but from the reviews online, it is rated very average. For free, I wouldn't complain though.

Ok, I figured not having those ports were going to hurt but this will be primarily used with my 360. Will I be able to reep the benefits of the 360's HD capabilities. I'm going to purchase a HDTV with all the bells and whistles in the near future. This is just to hold off the edge.

Thats all that matters :D

You can play Xbox360 in High Def. But you've got Blu-Ray or PS3 (that may not) be playable due to annoying security features. Make sure if you do get anything, its HDCP compliant.

If you dont mind could you explain to me why the PS3 would not allow me to use this TV? Its good to know I'll be able to use the 360 to its best capabilities though.

You can use the TV but the PS3 impliments this feature that will not allow you to output an image higher than 480p due to HDCP compliancy measures. You basically need a TV that is HDCP compliant to be able to output High Def. Its still unsure if this is games or movies or both, or if it will even happen at all. Its good to be prepared though.

This is all so no one can copy High Def material and distribute it. I got lucky because I have a TV that doesn't have HDMI but I have a DVI connection that is HDCP compliant :D

It will. The current specs for the PS3 show two HDMI outs and an analog AV out. I'm sure someone will comeup with a component conversion too.

The problem is that Blu-Ray looks set to require HDCP for full resolution playback of video content, so if you don't have HDMI or DVI with the security standard in place, you get a scaled back version.

If you don't care about that, then you are all set.

PS2 and Xbox have been hacked to death, the Xbox does things it really isnt supposed to do (upscale DVDs to HDTV resolutions for example...)

I see the same fate for the PS3 and Xbox360, just give it a little time and you will be able to do whatever you want with just the component inputs.

Dont let the HDTV snobs tell you otherwise

The way the PS3 does it is on a Hardware level. Sure, it could be hacked but it may require modding (physical modding) to your PS3. Something I would never do to my PSX, PS2, Xbox360 etc.

Hey guys, before this goes on any further. I have to leave for work so I'd like to thank you all for your help and insight just incase I can't get on at the office.

Unfortunately, your television doesn't support 720p resolution natively, which your 360 would normally display its games in. No worries, though; your Samsung will upconvert to 1080i if I remember correctly, so you'll always have that. Recent Samsung units have gotten acclaim, so your TV will hopefully do just fine. Congrats. :)

^^

Moot point, since all he needs to do is set his dash to the resolutions the TV accepts. 1080i looks the same.

AHHH! Great. I was worried there for a second. What is the difference between those two resolutions?

One is progressive (720p) and one is interlaced (1080i). Basically Progressive is good for moving objects and interlaced is good for more suttle and standalone pictures. Though its very very negligable though.

Progressive scans the whole screen at once

Interlace scans each odd line then each even line

So Progressive you've got a crisp image, Interlaced you will get a fuzzyier image. You've also got the fact that one is a higher resolution than the other (1080i is a higher res than 720p).

All and all, your all set

Rather than make my own thread, I'll just sneak in this post.

Thanks GA, I feel much better in the TV I got rather than the RCA. Parents are all like "Wow." (They're here helping me move into the place). Time Warner person will be out soon to give me the HD.

Oh, this is the TV:

Toshiba 57" Widescreen Digital-Cable-Ready Rear-Projection HDTV

Why not? Its cheap and painless. Most places will even give you a warranty on their work if you have somebody else do it.

All my consoles are modded and I enjoy the options it opens up (not just piracy if that is what you are thinking..)

Guys I have to ask for your help again!

I switched my cables to HD. I went into the 360 dashboard and have my TV which is shown in the 1st post of this thread to 1080. When I do this the game extends too far horizontally. In PD0 I can't see the gun ammo display. I can't use 720 and 420 is my only option. Will I notice a difference by setting my 360 to 420 instead of 1080 on my 1080 tv?

I tried to see if I can resize the screen thru the tv menus but no luck.

There's a big difference between 480p and 1080i. Not like you have an option other than tweaking your TV settings (which may include finding the service code).

Can you explain further for me. Sorry but Im not too fluent with all this yet. Whats this service code going to do? Am I basically pretty much screwed in regards to seeing the entire screen on my tv?

TV's have service modes (usually accessed by a input sequence on the remote). Once there, you'll find options to adjust that are not accessible in the TVs main menu(s). I know on the Samsungs, you can do things like change the melody that plays when you hit power, adjust the geometry etc.

I got you. Cool thanks for this help. Do you know where I should start searching for that information? Google? or Samsungs site?

I looked for you in google without much success... Contact a Samsung CSR.

You may be able to find something useful here...

Ok I'm going to head out and purchase this set today if they've got it. If anyone objects speak now or STFU.

I just stumbled across this. Do you have an idea of what I'd need to alter? Probally just the width like with a PC monitor?

I dug up my old thread to ask you all a simple question. How hard would it be to use this tv as a monitor for my PC also? Im thinking of rearranging my room and it'd be nice to be able to view all my files :D on this lovely TV.

TVs in general have issues with syncing refresh rates and resolutions with PCs (meaning, browsing the web or reading documents will be hard to do). Theres an app called powerbrick that helps with this but it can be very confusing in that you have to mess with alot of minute details just to get it to look correct.

With that said, I currently have my 27" Samsung HDTV connected to my PC (DVI to DVI straight to the PC). I use it mostly for watching Videos and thats it. If you have windows MCE 04' or 05', you could use the MCE app to browse files on your PC.

It's not easy since CRT's don't natively display 720p. The end result will be a PC image that's far too large for the screen (640X480, essentially 480p) or 1080i, which makes everything far too small for a screen of that size.

It can be done however, but it's a pain in the ass.

Here's a guide:

lol! It's Powerstrip

That bitch is heavy. Be careful.

I remember when I got my CRT set this summer. Once I got it into the house, shit got even harder. Taking it out of the box was an adventure. Part II was lifting it enough to get it on the stand. Not so much the weight as it was the akward way you have to grab it since it's widescreen.

PS3 will play GAMES in high def through component, just not MOVIES.
