Okay, I've had a fever for two days, and today is the first day that I'm fever free. I feel completely normal again, except for the fact that I get these red sores in the back of my throat on each side of my tonsil area. This happens to me everytime I get a fever, and the pain is beyond just the standard sore throat. The worst thing is that it usually lasts for a week and a half, non-stop. I've tried the throat spray, as well as lozenges, which not only doesn't work, but actually burns my taste buds off of my tongue. Seriously. And no, it's not strepp throat or anything like that, I've already looked it up. Maybe I could try gargling with warm salt water. Any other advice?

don't bother doing anything. You'll be dead by morning.

P.S. It's AIDS.

P.P.S. You probably got it by being orally raped in your sleep by a trucker

i imagine the people who ask for medical advice must not have insurance. As someone who lived three (four?) years without insurance, and ended up $1000 in the hole due to an eye infection, i can understand, but still.

I just got off a fever too, with a lingering sore throat. Not very painful though, only when I swallow.

I'm just drinking tons of water.

Well, there's always www.webmd.com, probably a better place to go with symptoms than GAF, where everything is tumorAIDS

You can't rule out strep throat until you do an actual test. Just because you read some symptoms on the internet somewhere doesn't mean you don't have an atypical presentation. I assume you aren't having any rashes or sores anywhere else, say on your neck or chest?

Also, describe these sores. Are they red, or are they pale/white in the center (like an apthous ulcer?) Are they uniform, or of various sizes, or do the coalesce? There are certain lidocaine-based throat preparations we give kids in the ER for similar presentations. However, I'm curious to know what other symptoms accompanied this fever of yours.

To be completely honest, I'd go seek out a doctor if I were in a similar situation, and if you are financially able. Especially if this was something recurrent (There may be means of prophylaxis you can try the next time you get sick so you DON'T end up with this again). It's not worth suffering through if you don't have to, and you need to be sure you don't have something serious.

(And if you say "But I hate doctors" I'll chime in with the AIDS crowd. Or hell, I'll call it Gonorrhea of the mouth if you do . . . :p )

The horrible salt water thing works. My mom always has me do it whenever I'm famished and sick. It also really turns you off to the idea of golden showers.

Is it sore all the time or only when you swallow? If it's continuously sore then all the usual treatments should help, but if it really kills when you swallow then theres not alot you can do - but that's only if it's viral.

Really you should see a doctor as sore throats don't normally last that long.

They are red sores, and the same size and shape on each side. They're not white with puss or anything like that. And my fever basically consisted of me going from feeling very hot, to having the shivers/aches for two days. I took Aleve to take the edge off of the fever symptoms.

Could be mono or AIDS.

There's another site i run across when i have symptoms of something that i need to inquire about.

Problem with self-diagnosing via the internet is that when i find what could possibly be the problem, i've usually got three types of illnesses that iy could be -- non-serious stuff that might go away on its own or with some easily self-administered care, stuff that you'll need to see a doctor to get meds for, or stuff that's in rare some cases fatal. At this point, no matter how calm i try to be, i always kinda freak out, think this is something that might kill me, drink a beer, go to sleep, and wake up feeling fine.
