I just saw a commercial celebrating (and rightfully so) the first Latino NFL quarterback/coach. This is pretty normal in the US. We celebrate the first minority, gay, woman, etc who get appointed to high up positions or accomplish something noteworthy.

I had a thought, though. Does Mexico celebrate their first Mexican-Vietnamese Senator? Does Korea celebrate their first Irish-Korean all star first baseman?

I honestly don't know if this is just a US thing or if it's normal everywhere.

The countries you've mentioned aren't really "melting pots" and they aren't very tolerant towards some groups.

Countries like the USA contain many different races/sexualities. By doing these ceremonies you're telling these minorities that they're being recognized.

Which is a good thing.
