The main character in Unreal 2 is a black man. There is also an old dos game called Shellshock(no not the Vietnam game) that features blacks as the main characters.
As someone mentioned, Urban Chaos actually features a black woman as the main character and it didn't suck at all. At least on pc anyways, I hear the console versions including the DC are fairly horrible. If you're interested, you should check out the pc version, there's a demo available.

I don't know if it's a good thing having a black guy in a game like GTA:SA though. I mean, they're obviously aiming for the stereotype black gangstah niggah here, so it's not going to change anything for people who are used to seeing that kind of black person in movies etc. But then again, I assume noone really expected that from a GTA game either. Still, at least he's black. 
As for the future iterations of GTA...when will we see a female main character? It is bound to happen sooner or later.

Yeah, a female character would be nice with all this new integrated RPG-like customization from San Andreas. I demand male characters in GTA: Sicilia and GTA: Tokyo first, though.

Take away celebrities, sports stars, or movie licences and theres been practically half a dozen games at most that black characters as the main character.

Yeah. His time period is like 1990-1994 i dont really remember. The OICW wasnt even designed until 94, the prototype was like 98 and they havnt even been really fielded for use yet, not untill next year AFIAK. Yet this guy finds one in the middle of some desert temple in 1992 or whatever. :/

Michael Jackson is obviously the most important black male in video games. Also, one of the McKids was black.
And as for homos, you could make your character into a total gay in Fable, and not just because of being able to marry dudes. In real life, a lot of those mustaches and haircuts would only ever be seen at a gay leather bar.
